Stellenbosch was our last stop on our holiday. We chose the Ryneveld Country Lodge because it billed itself as a gracious country guesthouse, registered national monument, late 1800's.
See its website. It also asks for a 50% deposit, the only B&B ever to ask for that. What it does not tell you is that a lot of the accommodation is not on site.
When we arrived, the guy on reception said he would show our friends their room first, and disappeared out of the front door! It transpired they were across the road, down an alley, in a side door, up stairs to the attic of an old slave cottage.
Ours was even better! We were shown down the road, through some gates, down the side of old cottages into a car park and shown into a converted garage! They had even left the garage doors on the back to preserve the look! The room itself was passable but it had a tin roof. We were there when they had a severe weather warning. Torrential rain for two nights on a tin roof. Sleep was impossible. We complained the next morning but the female manageress said there was nothing she could do; they were full.
The following morning she said she had spoken to the owner and in view of our complaint, they would only retain the deposit and not request the balance.
This was supposed to be the highlight of our holiday! Their website is extremely misleading. None of the rooms seem to be actually in the guesthouse. Guests disappeared up steps at the back, down the garden and next door. It would appear the owner is buying any accommodation in Ryneveld Street and billing it as part of his guesthouse. Misrepresentation?
I would say breakfast was OK. Because it was served on a large table with silver cutlery and they gave you the menu each morning (the same one) it was supposed to be special. I have had equally good, if not better, in SA.
