I was somewhat unsure what to expect from Clouds Estate when I booked through TripAdvisor, but I am pleased to say that it was worth it and represents an excellent value proposition (at least if you are spending dollars, pounds, or euros!). First and foremost, the views are absolutely stunning and it is among the most beautiful settings I have ever encountered. Go here just for that reason. Secondly, you benefit from being proximate to Stellenbosch, but very much secluded. This is the ideal place to go at the end of a South African holiday to completely unwind and relax. Finally, being next door to Delaire Graff and Tokara mean that you have world class dining, spa and wine tasting options literally next door, but don't have to deal with the whole production and insane prices of actually staying at these places. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that our villa (number 10), though spacious in the living room area and with a semi-private balcony with that aforementioned killer view, was a bit spartan on the decor front (perhaps reflecting some of the Dutch sensibilities apparent throughout) and the bedroom was quite small especially in relation to the living room area. The bathrooms are also a bit basic and while it might suit some, I personally dont like unenclosed shower room setups. All in all though, we would come back in a heart beat for the relaxed, unpretentious vibe in a stunning setting.

Room Tip: It's all about the views here, so go with a room that provides just that. We stayed in Villa 10 - ideal.

Great Stay. Rooms are new and beautiful. Amazing Views. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The hotel is 10 minutes from downtown Stellenbosch and right next to great wine tasting vineyards. Only thing is to not use their recommended transfer, since the company they recommend uses very old vans for the same price that others charge for nice cars.

After a rather nerve wracking drive up through the hills (literally driving through clouds for a bit!) we arrived at the beautiful Clouds Estate. Elegantly decorated with some quirky touches (a huge horse-lamp) we were given a gorgeous welcome glass of wine and shown to our room.
The views are spectacular over the Estate, and our room was modern, well sized, and clean with nice toiletries provided.
We ate at the restaurant, the food was good, not too expensive, but the wine was what really stood out.
A sunny day allowed us time to relax by the infinity pool in beautiful quiet surroundings.
The hotel was situated within a 20 minute(ish) drive from Stellenbosch, so is a good base for exploring the wine lands. A relaxing, peaceful attractively designed hotel.

I think we entered this wine estate from the wrong side (at the guest / hotel side), but I am still not sure. We told security we were wanting to do a wine tasting, he contacted reception, and we were invited on up!
We entered via front desk, through restaurant and shown to bar area where a lovely staff member happily took me through the wine tasting.
The views and the rim flow pool made me deeply envious of the (no doubt overseas) tourists enjoying the spoils with a favourable exchange rate backing them, it is a breathtakingly beautiful spot.
I happily exchanged some of my rands for two bottles of delicious MCC!

This was our second time here and there is not doubt that the views are second to none from this hotel. Went for a luxury room this time to get the better view. The hotel is beginning to look slightly tired in places - the outside areas are a little weathered and inside the main cupboard unit had rather unsightly stains under the glass which let the place down a bit.
There was no reception cover after 9:30pm, which was annoying as we wanted a blanket to sit outside one evening as it was a little cold, but there was no one to assist. Would be a good idea to put some in the rooms.

The staff are not unfriendly, but they’re not exactly as cheery as we have found in other hotels - they’re very quietly spoken and sometimes difficult to understand. We prefer something a little more friendly and engaging to make you feel more welcome.

Breakfast was inconsistent - plenty of buffet options on day one that dwindled day by day.

Those are the negative points that need some attention, but overall this hotel is still very relaxing and is afforded spectacular views over the mountain. I hope those views don’t lead to complacency as it takes more than a good view to sustain a good hotel. Overall, we would come back.
