“Great value delicious lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2012

We ordered platters with an assortment of sweet and savoury toppings for the rooster koek to share betweem four of us. All the food was wonderful and fresh- great cuts of cold meats and wonderfully gooey and mature cheeses.

I would highly recommend De Stomme Jonge for a lunch stop for any adventure out in Stellenbosch. The communal casual dinner is an absolute pleasure and allows for more of a social interaction than many of the formal fine dining experiences that can be had in Stellenbosch.

Our main course came to R198 for both the Stomme Jonge Platter and the Simon van der Stel platter and the extra roosterkoek at R8. As we shared the platters between four, the amazing meal only set us back R50- an absolute bargain!! Especially considering the high quality of food we received.

“Cheap and cheerful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2012

This is a cafe rather than a restaurant, serving light meals rather than fine cuisine. That said, the food is very tasty -- mainly cheese and/or meat platters arranged around the house speciality, 'roosterkoek' -- that translates roughly as griddlecakes, I suppose -- freshly-baked minature loaves of bread. There are quite a few variations on the basic pattern, offering variety and value. Excellent coffee, too. The place is tiny, but in fine weatehr there are tables outside overlooking the lively Ryneveld Sreet area. A great addition to the restaurants and cafes of Stellenbosch.

“What a lovely little surprise...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 February 2012

Lunch in Stellenbosch is always difficult - because you are spoilt for choice. One Saturday, on our way to another favourite (Cognito in Dorp Street), we stumbled past this small eatery, had a brief look at the menu, and decided to drop by...

So glad we did - the menu, while not extensive, offers a well-balanced selection centred mostly around 'roosterkoek' with various toppings and / or sides. ('Roosterkoek' is a bread cooked on a barbecue grill - their version was rather like a ciabatta).

Opting for one of the 'cheese platters', and a biltong roosterkoek, we were pleasantly surprised by the plain yet tasteful display that arrived - the experience was almost a bit tapas-ish, with having a little bit of various things to go with the roosterkoek.

With a fresh meal for two, including a glass of wine each, coming in at under R150, we will definitly be visiting again...

Doe zo voort!

“Personal atmosphere and attention in relaxed and homely small restaurant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 December 2011

Off Rynevled Street and around the corner from Dorp Street, this little gem is situated in the historical centre of Stellenbosch, tucked in behind a large oak tree. The street atmosphere is great with a few dining terraces around.
The service is excellent and personal by the owner/proprietor/host/waiter. The menu is limited to Roosterkoek bread with a variety of cheeses, meats, olives, biltong etc. served on a wooden platter for sharing. We had traditional Milktart and coffee, both excellent.
Overall a quaint and modern (in a quirky sense) experience with decor to match. There are some interesting old books on the window cill and photographs on the walls.
Definitely worth a regular visit.
