“Awful experience at Spier”
Reviewed 23 December 2008

We booked this hotel having read reviews and looked at the photos in the brochures. However we were extremely dissapointed by the lack of service throughout the hotel, from arriving at reception to service at breakfast.

We had booked and paid for 3 nights but were so disgusted by the flies all over the buffet breakfast that we checked out having only stayed overnight. Even more dissapointing was when the member of staff on reception noticed our booking was for 3 nights they didn't ask us why we were checking out having only been in the hotel just over 12 hours.
The majority of the hotel's business is clearly short stay coach tours and they don't appear to care about individual guests and the quality of service they provide.

Having read the great reviews of the moyo dinner I was completely disappointed with the whole thing. We managed to get a tree table but the place was full of conference delegates. The service was shocking and the food was extremely average. Waste of money.

This touches on the main problem with the hotel. It is a large conference venue and not the romantic getaway that we were looking for. Not recommended for honeymoon.

Rooms were big. In fact our room looked like it was built as a self contained apartment and had been converted to hotel use.

On the up side lots of facilities. My wife went horse riding.

There were many aspects to my stay at Spier. The hotel itself is pleasant with very large bedrooms which are nicely decorated, a real plus for this hotel. Wine tasting, shops and a small market made the stay a bit different that other hotels. The grounds of the hotel are absolutely amazing and definetely allow you to unwind and relax, especially if you have come from the busy Cape Town area. Wine can be bought on the estate and brought back to the terrace for a drink in the evening. We went to the Moyo restaurant, really nice surroundings but the food was disappointing. Overall, I would definetely recommend the Spier hotel for a relaxing evening while it is still only 10 minutes to Stellenbosch and the surrounding wine lands.

We stayed at Spier for three nights after flying from London to Cape Town. We wanted a good place to relax with our 1 1/2 year old while we settled into South Africa. Spier could not have been better. The staff was absolutely exceptional. We had a cool room that was unique. The grounds were amazing. It was just very easy and beautiful. We had dinner at Moyo and absolutely loved it. MOst days we just grabbed picnic food from the deli and enjoyed the grounds. Our only small complaint was that the parking lot was so far from our room, which would not have been a problem if our 1 year old didn't want to be carried all the time. There are a lot of conferences going on as the facility caters to that, but we did not find that a problem at all. Overall, we were very happy with our experience. An easy drive to Stellenbosch for dinner and also convenient to Franschoeck.

After reading some great reviews of Spier I had high expectations - how disappointed I was!! We stayed for 2 nights as part of a Winter Break Package (which was great value for money) which included 2 meals, wine tasting & a spa treatment. We arrived late into the evening & after a small wait were taken to our accomodation by golf cart (nice touch!). The rooms are located in houses which are split into 2, one downtairs & one upstairs, they have a rustic feel to them but were quite cold & had stone floors which added to the coldness & emptiness feel of the room- this might be nice in the summer!! We ate in the main restaurant on the first night & the food was okay, each meal comes with a recommended wine which I thought was a nice touch, staff were very friendly. Breakfast was average buffet style, nothing to write home about. Whilst at Spier we visited the Cheetah Outreach Centre which comes at an additional cost but is good fun, we also went for an hours horse riding & did an informal wine tasting session. We did want to have a formal tasting session with cellar tours but they were all booked up. We dined at Moyo on the last night which is an Under the African Sky Buffet night - this was good fun & the food was suprisingly good for buffet although it did get quite cold in the evening however blankets were supplied to keep you warm!

All in all our stay at Spier was average & not as good as other reviewers have made it out to be, I feel 2 nights was too long to stay & would recommend it for a one night stop only.

Some aspects of Spier were great, the rooms are large and well furnished with a gas fireplace in each, the hotel restaurant is excellent and Moyo is well worth visiting too.
Unfortunately, we had to move rooms twice due to problems with the doors, which was a major inconvenience and could have been better handled by management.
There are large grounds and a winery there too, as well as horse riding and a cheetah breeding project, so it would be good for families. It is about 5km outside Stellenbosch.

We hired a car from Cape town and one of our stops was 2 nights at the Spier Hotel Village. We loved it great accomadation even had a fire in the bedroom area of our garden room which also led out to a private pool shared by just a few other rooms. We had the pool all to ourselves no one else used it. The rooms are set out like a village of town houses with small pools to share. There is also a main pool area near the main part of the hotel. The first night we ate at the Moyo Experience - all you can eat African buffet with entertainment thrown in (book ahead through the hotel) - a great night and a must for anyone staying at the hotel. The second night we ate in the hotel again a great meal. Its a great place for families, there were a lot of families but don't be put off if you a just a couple as we are as it was still amazing. Great bar areas to relax in for a drink. The other attractions are a bird sanctury and Cheeter encounter, horse riding, wine tasting and a large lake to have a picnic round.
