“Brilliant Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2013

Last September my sister and I spent three nights in the Luxury Vineyard Room, at this lovely establishment. The room was extremely clean and tidy. The staff were friendly.
Beautiful scenery and secluded setting with great views :) We are going back this June, I am excited and am really looking forward to it.

Stayed in this beautiful hotel located in the fabulous wine region as part of an organised tour of South Africa with Riviera Travel.
Absolutely stunning location with views over vineyards towards the beautiful mountain range which seem to dominate the magical landscape of South Africa. The mountains and countryside are simply magnificent, breathtaking mostly - it truly is a beautiful country.
Devon Valley is extremely comfortable (we had a huge bedroom with two enormous double beds and french windows onto patio area. Dining room and bar area (onto lovely terrace) very colonial in style, open and airy. We enjoyed Malayian buffet dinner one night and the breakfast was full of sumptious fresh fruit, yogurts and delicious pastries. Breakfast hot food, not too great, and staff not up to speed with keeping coffee and tea topped up. Nevertheless, the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Room Tip: Ask for nibbles to accompany your apperitif before dinner - they were not readily offered.

Good rooms and adequate restaurant set on a hillside vineyard. Felt more of a business and conference hotel rather than one targeted at holiday makers. Carlos organized an excellent bespoke wine tour.

Why oh why do some hotels like this make wifi so difficult to use and make a charge. Progressive hotels don't charge.

Dear Roofview

We are continually looking for ways to be able to reduce or offer Wifi for free. In South Africa and even more specifically at Devon Valley, the cost to company is extremely high for internet access. We accept that Globally Wifi is becoming free, but the costs need to be absorbed somehow into our businesses.

However, if you join our i Prefer loyalty program on of the many benefits is unlimited free wifi All Preferred hotels. You can join this at www.iprefer.com or from our own hotel website.

We do a lot of conference and group business, we at the same time value our individual travellers who make up the large portion of our business mix. With this in mind, when we have a conference or group we ensure we had team members available to be dedicated to creating memorable experiences for our individual guests.

stayed here for 2 nights early march, location is good, we had a warm welcome and efficient service. personally i quite liked the hotel room and bar area, and our room was well appointed, however some of our group had problems with no hot water for 2 days! my only other complaint was the food. the salad was left out on an open table and had flies landing on it all night, and the soup had caught and had a burnt flavour, the buffet was also limited and unlabled (i prefer to know what i am eating) i think this hotel is trying very hard to be a level higher than it acually is you must get the basics right first!
i actually loved stellenbosch area but i will look for a better hotel next time. or if i had to stay here i would eat out as the breakfast was poor also.

Room Tip: choose a ground floor room in the new block, order a bottle of wine and sit out - the hotels best fe...

Dear richardseamer

Many thanks for the time taken to do your review on your trip to South Africa and more specifically Devon Valley Hotel.

Being on a farm, flies can at times be a problem. We are continually investing in methods to reduce and eradicate the problem. On exceptional hot days such as you specific visit, we have a few more flies. Recently we changed our pest Control Company and they assure me they will assist us in this regard.

I am sad to hear you did not enjoy the food, normally and from most my other reviews, our food is our major success. I have spoken to our chef and we will keep striving to deliver excellence in food offering.

I do hope that you will return to South Africa again.

Kind regards

We stayed two nights here recently. Our welcome was friendly and the glass of chilled rose well received. Our room was in an intimate courtyard setting with pool and terrace. It was very comfortable and well equipped. The food was excellent, plenty of choice, good value and superbly cooked and presented. Staff were friendly and efficient. The grounds were beautiful and the viewsfrom the terrace amazing. If I may add a little advice, it would be for the manamgement to keep a closer check on maintenance. There were one or two issues with our room which should have been picked up on without my having to mention them and only one of the two PCs in the business centre was able to access the internet, leaving a queue of guests all wanting to use the remaining one. These are very minor things, but they can make a big difference. All in all, we felt that the hotel is well run and guest comfort is important to the staff.

Many thanks for your review. Internet access is our challenge. We are located in a valley and hence struggle at times to get good, reliable internet reception. We are looking at ways to improve our internet service to make it more reliable and certainly faster.

We hope that you will return to South Africa again in the not too distant future

We enjoyed one night at this great hotel in the Winelands! When checking in we were served a chilled glass of the estates Rosè and then showed to our room with a private terrace and a large well-equipped bathroom. So comfy! The outdoors area was beautiful with a view of some mountains.. We had dinner at the restaurant, it was delicious! We'll be coming back! =) The breakfast was excellent! Good value for money.

Tucked away in the beautiful countryside and vineyards just outside of Stellenbosch is the Devon Valley Hotel. We were impressed from the moment we arrived in reception and the security guard had called ahead with our name so there was no searching for the reservation like at every other hotel we've stayed in. I know it's a little thing but it was nice to walk up to the desk and have paperwork already waiting for our signature. Christopher did a great job of checking us in, informing us about breakfasts, the property and answering our questions about shuttles, etc and off we went to our room....it was very spacious and tastefully decorated with a beautiful view from the sliding glass doors. The king bed was wonderful and the pillows were so incredibly comfy! Like the bedroom, the bathroom is large as well with a lovely free standing tub complete with a bath salts and a wire rack....perfect place for a glass of vino!. Word to the wise with regard to the shower (at least in our room...52) .....there is a rainshower head mounted in the ceiling but there is also a removable handheld shower head mounted on the wall. There is a knob between the hot and cold water knobs which controls where the water comes out. Make sure it's turned such that the water comes out of the rainshower head!!!! It's very powerful and if it comes out of the handheld device, the force of the water lifts the handheld from the mount and spray all over the bathroom walls, ceiling, window, toilet and a poor unsuspecting husband as well!!!

We took a walk around the grounds and meandered down to one of the two pools....all of the paths are lined with gorgeous flowers and plants. On the way to the pool there's a little bench surrounded by dense plants and trees and it's so peaceful and serene.

We ate dinner on the terrace at Flavours and my husband and I each enjoyed our meals taking in the views and listening to two young men play the sax and guitar with some vocals thrown in as well. I had a delicious piece of cob (tender white delicately flavored fish) with a really light lime pistachio sauce that was perfect...it didn't over power the fish and hubby had springbok with a sauce that had blueberries (and something else which escapes me) in it. He was a little worried about whether or not he'd like the sauce but it complimented that springbok beautifully. The amarula creme brulee was the perfect ending to my meal and my husband said the red velvet cake was to die for. Senziwe (sp?) took excellent care of us even as we moved our table not once, not twice, but THREE times to get downwind of a very heavy cigarette smoker! The general manager, Andrew Dietrich, was constantly making sure the diners were happy with the food, with the service, with everything. You could tell he genuinely cared about the guests and the hotel. When we arrived back at our room, there was a very nice cheese/fruit platter and wine awaiting us. Not sure if that's something they do for all guests or because we're SVC Elite members or what but it was another very nice touch!

The following day we went to the Stellenbosch Wine Festival and since we planned to do a LOT of wine tasting, we didn't want to drive. I'd read a comment here on TripAdvisor by Andrew mentioning that they can arrange a shuttle into Stellenbosch for a nominal fee. We took advantage of that we were dropped and picked up right by the festival and it was only R120 each way (total for 2....WELL worth it!)

There is a brick oven out on the terrace and we figured the pizzas must be great because the poor pizza chefs NEVER got a break. We decided to give them a try and we were very glad we did. We had a "chicken run" and "The Feast" and truly couldn't tell you which one was better. The crust was crispy and thin and the toppings were delish!

On our last morning we tried the buffet since it seemed really popular with the guests. They had pretty much everything you could want for breakfast....cereals, yoghurt, eggs, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, beans, potatoes, pastries, toast, juices and an assortment of fruit/cheese/meats and smoked salmon. All very tasty...especially for buffet food!

When it was time to check out, Kelvin remembered that we'd gone to the wine festival the previous day and asked how it was. One more little touch that really made this hotel stand out in my mind.

If you go to the Devon Valley Hotel and you do not have a good experience, I would have to say it's your own fault. I truly believe that if there is anything that a guest is unhappy with, the staff and general manager will go above and beyond to make it right. It's very obvious from the moment you arrive that their guests are their priority and they want you to enjoy your stay with them.

I know we will be back for repeat visits and will bring friends/family as well.
