this was the surprise of our weekend stay in stellenbosch.
you start off in a room/reception that is not particularly encouraging with items cluttered in cupboards and poor lighting. from there you visit 4 houses. each being furnished according to the time period in which it was built. at each house you are met by a guide that chats to you about what life was like in the cape during the time represented by the house.
this might not seem very different from other museums, but i can assure you it is. the guides are well informed and wonderfully friendly. the layout of the individual houses and the 4 as a museum makes it an unexpectedly pleasant and interesting experience.
even my partner, who is not the museum type, enjoyed it thoroughly.
ps make sure to have some cash on hand. although not pressured in any way, you are able to tip the guides and you are going to want to.

The museum is housed in a few buildings that were originally normal homes - one of which is the first house in Stellenbosch. There are also grander homes with exquisite examples of the furniture of the day. One can also see artefacts such as the first fire brigade.

This is a must see! How amazing to see how the early settlers set up house bringing all the European skills and finery to a primative land. One cannot comprehend how they transported all the raw materials

A journey back into the beginning's of the town though houses en situ representing various periods, with really helpful ladies in each of the houses in period dress more than willing to give you details of life at that time, and information of their lives and how the changing political landscape has affected them.

So easy to miss tucked away behind a walled garden, this small museum gives you a wonderful glimpse of life for the early settlers and there decendants
