“Old World Charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 November 2012

The hotel is in a busy street but this presented no problems as the car was valet parked. Checking in was efficiently carried out by the very pleasant Guest Manager John (?). We wre delighted with our room which was spacious and had plenty of storage space, stting area and desk. Free wifi access was automatically provided on check in. The huge bathroom was amazing with retro bath, twin washbasins, a large shower big fluffy towels and bathrobes. The large fridge was there for our own drinks and there was plenty of ice.
The hotel has an inner courtyard which forms part of the restaurant. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was good but not outstanding. Next morning we were greeted by name by Guest Manager who showed us to our table. Breakfast was good; a buffet for cereals, fruit, cold meat, cheese different breads etc and plenty of choice on the cooked menu.
We had a most pleasant stay in a hotel with lots of old world charm with modern ammenities.

My wife and I spent three weeks in the Western Cape. This was the only hotel of the seven that we would definitely not return to.

We found it to be poorly maintained and poorly cleaned. Our bathroom had a fair bit of black mold in the corners.

Perhaps the modern wing has cheerful rooms but we stayed in the older section and found the room to be dark and dreary, despite sunny weather outside.

Little annoyances: WiFi extremely slow. You need to have a staff member take you to your car through locked gates if you wanted to access it.

From the look of the pool water, I wouldn't want to go in.

I don't write many reviews and usually only if I'm very impressed with a hotel or had a terrible experience unfortunately this is the latter.
We arrived in Stellenbosch and stopped at the tourist office info to get the address for the Oude Werf hotel as we had stayed there on our last visit 10 years previously and really enjoyed our stay. The lady asked if we had already booked and we said we hadn't because we had changed our plans because of the bad weather, she said she would call and see if the had availability, they did and quoted the price as 1100rand with breakfast, we agreed to take the room but were surprised when the lady said we had to pay a deposit as this was the first time we had been asked to pay anything before seeing the room and had stopped off at tourist offices all over south Africa, anyway we paid the deposit and she gave us a slip of paper and told us it would be deducted off the price of the room and to give it to the receptionist at check in.
We were given a room which I believe is one of their Gouvernor rooms, I must say the room was lovely with a 4 poster bed and a big new bathroom, the only problem is that right in front of the glass entrance doors is a 6 foot wall and the other window is right on the sidewalk so you have to keep the curtains closed, we were only staying their for 1 night so it wasn't a problem although I wouldn't have liked to have stayed longer, what did bother us was that the room was freezing, it had been unusually bad weather and the other hotels and guest houses we had stayed at up until then all had heaters in the rooms and most also had electric blankets. I went to the reception and told the girl that the room was very cold and did they have a heater she called for a porter to accompany me back to the room, he told us how to regulate the temperature, we told him we knew how it worked and that it wasn't working, he assured us that it would now work. We were going to visit the town so left about 40 minutes later but the room was still cold and we knew the heating wasn't working so I once again told the receptionist who once again replied that it was working. when we got back about 3 hours later the room was still freezing, I wanted to leave as we couldn't have a shower or bath because it was so cold but my husband pointed out that it was nearly 7 pm. and we didn't have a telphone number or name of another hotel or guest house and the best option was to try and get the problem resolved this time with the manager so on our way out to dinner we asked for the manager who was a lady she told us that it was very strange because the heating was working and said she would personally check the room but if it wasnt working she would have to change the room, this really annoyed me, why didn't she change the room hours earlier. When we returned from dinner there was no sign of anyone and the room was still freezing.
The next morning I switched on the TV for the news and it wasn't working, we checked out the bed side lights and they were'nt working either, we had only had the main lights on the night before and hadn't turned on the TV so don't know if there was a fuse during the night or before we arrived. We couldn't have a bath or shower because of the cold but even if we could nothing was working so we couldn't use a hair dryer.
We went to breakfast and were handed a menu with prices for bacon and eggs etc, we weren't asked if we wanted a cooked breakfast so assumed that only a continental breakfast was include in the room price they only asked us if we wanted a cooked breakfast as we were getting up to leave which I thought was pretty strange. I can understand that maybe not all guests have breakfast included but when they ask for your room number and see that you have it included why don't they just ask you if you want a cooked breakfast or not, why do they wait until you've finished, maybe we were just unlucky with the waiter.
We go to the reception to check out and see that the bill is around 1200rand (I don't know the exact amount because we were'nt given a copy of the bill) I tell the receptionist that we already paid a deposit she says that she's taken it off, on checking again we notice that for the first time in south Africa they hadn't quoted the Net rate and had added on the vat, tourist tax and whatever else they charge which meant it was more than 300 rand more than the original price of 1100rand quoted, we paid up just glad to be leaving but before we left told her that nothing was working in the room, she called the day manager which was once again the same lady as the day before, we told her once again that nothing was working , she asked if it was only this morning or the day before we said we didn't know, she said she was extremely sorry about the heating problems the day before, yes she was so sorry she did nothing about it.
We loved this hotel on our last visit and were looking forward to staying again never did we think it would end up being the worst hotel of our trip, the hotel was much nicer before the renovations but that's a matter of taste, I do think the owners have to get their management sorted out if a guest has a problem the management have to sort it out and not just hope it'll go away by itself.
Lastly they have a card on your bed saying that they have added 4 rand to your bill and if you don't want to donate this money you have to ring an internal extension number and ask them to remove it, now who on earth would ring and ask them to remove 4 rand, it's got nothing to do with the money, 4 rand is nothing and I'm all for donating money to help the less fortunate but I don't like being manipulated into donating to something that I know nothing about, if it's something they believe in they should go about this privately without involving the guests.
We love stellenbosch but will never stay here again.

So we arrived at the hotel in a major rainstorm and managed to get our car into the tight car park (with help from the staff).

We where shown to a modern room at teh back of teh hotel which was very stylish and quite smart looking.

Hiowever, the ceiling started to leak and we had to be moved.

We got moved to a lovely room in the main building - which also sprung a leak.

Clearly the building has issues but the staff could not have been friendly.

We had a superb breakfast in the hotel restaraunt and also a meal there.

I would not hestitate to recommend the place despite our problems - the efforts to try and fix where very good.

I do have 1 complaint though - we paid for some laundry which came nicely fresh and folded - 3 days later I went to put on a shirt which had a bad stain down it (not removed by teh landry and the same for a second shirt). Now I put the stains on the shirt but the point was I needed to to get them cleaned which is why I paid for laundry.

Room Tip: We had two lovely rooms - both with a leaky ceiling in terrible weather !!! I would say our initi...

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left - 5 days later, there was not one single complaint we could have made against the fantastic staff at this great 'downtown' hotel. There are some issues with the building but we had a fantastic stay and would not hesitate to recommend it. We had booked an apartment style room and were a little bit surprised that it was 'motel' style, in that we had to walk outdoors to get to the lift/stairs to our room. But when we got there, it was magnificent. We were in room 405. It was huge, dining table which sat 10, two enormous bedrooms and two balconies, with seating for 12 people on one and for 4 on the other. Great kitchen and two big big bathrooms. First the few minor problems, the fittings in the bathroom were broken and need a bit of looking at, as was one of the double sinks in the bathroom which was cracked. The restaurant next door has an extractor fan duct and and a chimney which were below our apartment and fed their dirty air up to us. Particularly bad at lunchtime when they were cooking and we were relaxing. Finally the yard....or the Werf....in the title needs a bit of a clean-up. It is a great outdoor area in the middle of the hotel where you can relax and eat, but it is a bit scrappy and could do with some replacement furniture and a coat of paint. Enough complaining........now the good bits, breakfasts were fantastic, local produce available with an extensive selection on a cosmopolitan menu full of international favourites. Great coffee quickly refilled by the friendly and efficient staff. Dinner was a similarly great experience, super food, well presented and reasonably priced. Worthy of special mention are Gregory the duty manager who was constantly looking for ways to help and even more so was John from customer services who was brilliant throughout our stay getting weather forecasts recommending places to go and making dinner reservations. He was constantly helpful and friendly in a way which I have never experienced before, he was brilliant. The location of the hotel is excellent with an incredible variety of restaurants all in very easy and safe walking distance. Parking was safe and secure in their own underground car-park. The pool area is well manicured as are all the new rooms around it which looked fantastic. We did not see any of the old rooms so cannot comment.

Room Tip: The apartment was fantastic and very reasonably priced. New rooms round the pool look very posh.

Very nice hotel. Situated in the middle of Stellenbosch. Our room was excellent. Big, modern, clean and with a nice fire place. Outside our room was a nice pool area. Breakfast was ok, bit crowded and no scrambled egg etc. We can really recommend the hotel!

Room Tip: Try to get room no 121.

We were initially assigned to a dark and gloomy room with an undersized bed and our request for a more suitable room resulted in our getting a dark and gloomy room with a large bed. At least we had a good night’s sleep! Apparently there is a new wing with better rooms but ours was in the old wing and the lack of light and old, dark, heavy furniture and furnishings held no appeal for us and made us feel depressed.

A quick shower the next morning and hopes of a good breakfast were soon dashed when the very ordinary cold buffet offerings were inspected. Hot food was ordered from the menu – or at least it should have been hot! It wasn’t!

On the plus side however, the hotel is centrally and conveniently located.

All in all, it was probably the least appealing hotel we stayed at in our three weeks in South Africa.
