The Beautiful South Guest House
Ranked #15 of 17 Hotels in Stellenbosch
Reviewed 21 March 2014

We arrived a little later than expected after a late flight, Lisa had waited behind for us without any contact from us (as we were mid air at the time so couldn't let her know).

She was very friendly and informative even after the inconvenience caused.

The room was fairly small but it was very sweet, we are a young(ish) couple in our mid twenties and we have been travelling around, we wanted something friendly and safe but with a bit more character than a soulless hotel.

We were using the guesthouse as a base rather than a holiday destination, I think this worked in our favor very well. Although there is a pool it is a in a walled garden and may have the tenancy to feel a little bit claustrophobic for the whole day sunbathing.

Stellenbosch town center is good 10 - 15 minute walk away but its a nice walk and feels very safe.

I would recommend this guest house and we would probably stay here ourselves again next time we are in the area, I would however avoid it as a weeks holiday 'by the pool' type holiday personally.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room by the pool, its called the African room - its small but we liked it, its peac...

In one sense, I should be giving a really positive review, as we arrived, realised this so wasn't for us, left within the hour, and received a full refund of our deposit. For that we are most grateful. However, it seems useful to say why it wasn't for us to help others make informed decisions.

This is a three star guest house. The star rating in South Africa has only recently been overhauled to really mean something, which I hadn't taken on board. And I guess for a three star it was OK. However, the website is a little bit misleading. We were booked in to an African Room, described as being suitable for honeymooners, and having a modern bathroom. The room we were given was so smalll we could hardly walk round the bed, and there was barely room for both suitcases. The bathroom was little more than a tiny corridor at the back of the room, two people couldn't pass each other in it, and it was rather shabby. There is no in-room tea or coffee making - that is in the reception area. Outside there is a large pool, but the rest of the space is so taken up with sunbeds, tables and chairs that we felt rather claustrophobic.

But hey, it is three star and had I twigged this I wouldn't have gone for it. Things were made a bit worse by the fact that it was the SA equivalent of the UK's Freshers Week ( it is in an area of student flats) and there was really reallly loud music playing in the middle of the afternoon. Bad luck for us! It also felt a bit expensive for what it was - 1100 Rand for a room compared to, say, 1350 for 5 star places. However, if you want a base in Stellenbosch in walking distance from the town centre, then this might be for you. Just not for us.

We just stayed at The Beautiful South with our two small kids and my parents, and all of us enjoyed it very much. Peter was a very amenable host, who gladly swapped rooms for my parents. Our family suite was great and the breakfasts were very nice every day. The regular rooms are not large (hence my parents moving) but all very well appointed and cleaned.

Room Tip: Family suite is very good, some rooms a bit small.

We stayed at this guest house a return visitors for four nights and enjoyed both the tranquil setting and the proximity to Stellenbosch "downtown", which is an easy walk through the University Campus away.
The room was clean with direct access to the pool area, the small garden is a little paradise to spend some time reading or relaxing before dinner or late at night.
The owners Katarina and Peter are very helpful with all requirements.
Overall, a very pleasant stay and highly recommended.

A lovely B&B.. We only stayed for two nights as we wanted to sample the wine lands on our way up to Knysna.. we stayed in room 4 which was lacking space and we did feel we were tripping over each other. If we were staying for any longer it may have become a problem but for two nights it was fine. The pool was lovely and its right out side your door. It is a 15/20 min walk from the center which isn't too much of a problem as its 100% safe to walk around at night. The breakfast was really nice, they have daily specials for something a little different. Scramble eggs with Billtong !! :) The little town center is full of places to eat and drink and was a welcomed change from Cape Town.. Overall we had a very nice stay, the bed was soooooo comfy and the cottage is lovely. very friendly helpful owners, Peter even drove us to a restaurant instead of booking us a cap.. Thank you for a lovely stay.

A really friendly place to stay in Stellenbosch .The majority of rooms are of African décor, well decorated and lush comfy beds and pillows.
A good breakfast is available each day a different special for breakfast.
The guest house also has a pool.
The owners are Swedish but are really knowledgeable about the area.
We stayed overnight and went to a township show . amazink.co.za
A great place to stay in the Stellenbosch wine area

I stayed here one or two nights with my dad.
Location is pretty good with centre of town in walking distance.
The rooms were little disappointing , but this might be related to price level.
I stayed in more expensive places on other days of my trip.
Pool area looked nice but we were there in off season so did not swim.
For the rest we had a nice (short) stay.
