I don't know where to begin with this review. Firstly, I do not think it merits 4 stars as awarded by the SA tourist authority. The cottages, located a short walk from the main house where you eat breakfast are very close to the main R44 road, with cars & motor bikes travelling at 100KM plus, so imagine the noise at night. You need ear plugs. Purchased the following day!
It takes the virtual booking on line experience all the way. You arrive, and you better not have forgotten the code for the electric gate which you are given upon payment of your deposit/full holiday amount, as without it you cannot enter the premises. We could not find our code, but despite the fact that we had paid in full, the man at the other end of the intercom did not want to let us in and said we had to have the code, so we rustle through our booking information and luckily, find the said code, so could enter the premises. What would he have said to us had we not been able to find the entry code?
We enter our cottage, which is spacious, but rustic, and on first appearances looks clean. The bathroom tiles to the shower cubicle were cracked and needed to be replaced along with the sealant. The net curtain to the window needed a wash as did the curtain pole. The suite although old, was clean, as were the towels which appeared new.
The bedding was clean.
As we noted how noisy the room was, we called the duty manager. We were told that the noise would dampen down after 8.30 pm as it was the traffic leaving Stellenbosch, on a Friday evening. The traffic does not dampen down. At around 1 am we switched on the A/C in an attempt to muffle the noise. After mentioning the noise in the room you would have thought that maybe someone would have knocked on the door to introduce themselves, but alas no. We had no contact with the management during our 3 night stay.
The cottage I think would be very cold in the cooler months as the doors have an considerable gap at the top and the wind will whistle through. There is a fire place but an additional 25 rand is asked for 6 pieces of wood, if you decide to have a fire. A little cheeky, you wouldn't expect to pay to use a radiator in a room.
Do take a book with you, as the TV is very old, - no satellite service, or internet in the rooms. The magazines on the pine table consisted of complimentary magazines from the middle east & the Dubai addition of Hello. They are hardly current issues, with the oldest being 10 years old and the Beckhams just announcing baby #3 on it's way. Maybe that's why nobody meets and greets you - they are in Dubai!
