“Family Stay”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

We have stayed over the guesthouse for three days. Debbie and her staff gave us a warm welcome. The garden the BBQ (or Braai) area are very nice. Yes you can hear the road a bit, but we were not disturbed.
The location is excellent and there are plenty of nice restaurants around, the best one the in the Hidden Valley!
The rooms are comfortable and give you a more home feeling than some sterile hotel rooms. Bring some time so you enjoy the nice garden, play with the dogs or arrange your own Braai. Three days was not enough for us.

Despite a shaky start to our stay (another guest's fault!), we found the staff friendly and the accomodation comfortable. The view from the room is lovely and the breakfast more than adequate. The bathroom could be larger and the gardens could do with a little tidy up, but on the whole we were satsified with our stay. We would certainly use this establishment again.

Dear Guests,

Thank you very much for your lovely positive feedback, we really do appreciate it.

Just to let you know that we've in the meantime hired a fantastic garden service company and they gardens are looking fabulous again. We plan on hosting small weddings in our gardens as of this season and it's essential to have the gardens immaculate. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Bellevue soon. Come and try our very unique MINDspa!

I don't know where to begin with this review. Firstly, I do not think it merits 4 stars as awarded by the SA tourist authority. The cottages, located a short walk from the main house where you eat breakfast are very close to the main R44 road, with cars & motor bikes travelling at 100KM plus, so imagine the noise at night. You need ear plugs. Purchased the following day!

It takes the virtual booking on line experience all the way. You arrive, and you better not have forgotten the code for the electric gate which you are given upon payment of your deposit/full holiday amount, as without it you cannot enter the premises. We could not find our code, but despite the fact that we had paid in full, the man at the other end of the intercom did not want to let us in and said we had to have the code, so we rustle through our booking information and luckily, find the said code, so could enter the premises. What would he have said to us had we not been able to find the entry code?

We enter our cottage, which is spacious, but rustic, and on first appearances looks clean. The bathroom tiles to the shower cubicle were cracked and needed to be replaced along with the sealant. The net curtain to the window needed a wash as did the curtain pole. The suite although old, was clean, as were the towels which appeared new.
The bedding was clean.

As we noted how noisy the room was, we called the duty manager. We were told that the noise would dampen down after 8.30 pm as it was the traffic leaving Stellenbosch, on a Friday evening. The traffic does not dampen down. At around 1 am we switched on the A/C in an attempt to muffle the noise. After mentioning the noise in the room you would have thought that maybe someone would have knocked on the door to introduce themselves, but alas no. We had no contact with the management during our 3 night stay.

The cottage I think would be very cold in the cooler months as the doors have an considerable gap at the top and the wind will whistle through. There is a fire place but an additional 25 rand is asked for 6 pieces of wood, if you decide to have a fire. A little cheeky, you wouldn't expect to pay to use a radiator in a room.

Do take a book with you, as the TV is very old, - no satellite service, or internet in the rooms. The magazines on the pine table consisted of complimentary magazines from the middle east & the Dubai addition of Hello. They are hardly current issues, with the oldest being 10 years old and the Beckhams just announcing baby #3 on it's way. Maybe that's why nobody meets and greets you - they are in Dubai!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from lifts, on non smoking floors, not facing busy roads.

Our humble appologies for these guest feeling not so positive about their stay at Bellevue. Let me clarify a few points and hopefully they can feel better about it.

-We have regular guests staying continuously with us all year around, probably around 50% of our occupancy. If the road noise was that disturbing, im very sure guests would never return. If you are indeed a very light sleeper, i can offer you earplugs, but we are no different to any other guesthouse located in town or on the R44.

-Bellevue manor employs 2 managers rotating each other, and it's impossible that these guests were not greeted and welcomed at breakfast in the morning as only one of our managers unlocks the office and serves breakfast each morning.

-Being a guesthouse and not a 5* property, we are not required to have 24hr staff on duty, so we always give guests a gate code and room key details should they be arriving after office hours and usually guests are fine with this arrangement. However, due to security reasons, we cannot just open the gate after hours to anybody who asks, and we always ask security questions first before we open the gate. A procedure im sure you will appreciate as an in-house guest to ensure optimum safety.

-We appreciate positive criticism very much and take it seriously. We have since done maintenance on the bathrooms with regards to the tiles and grouting. We have also upgrade our televisions to new flat screens and we indeed have the M-net satellite service together with the SABC television channels and e-tv in each room. We also generally upgraded the gardens and interior decorating of all the cottages, offering a newer, upgraded, refreshing look.

-Previous guest sometimes leaves their magazines and books behind, and we just assumed it would be interesting reading materials for other guests too, but obviously not, so we have removed any older magazines and reading materials from the rooms, only leaving the newer one's. appologies for this.

-We pride ourselves on our cleanliness of our linen and suites and to truly be a "home" away from home to all our guests. 95% of our guests are very happy, returning guests and this should speak volumes. We appologise about this very unfortunate rare incident where guests were not feeling happy, and i hope we have rectified everything possible to ensure that this does not happen again.

We look forward to welcoming you to Bellevue Manor Guesthouse & Wellness retreat soon to proof to you that we do take our guest and their comments seriously and to ensure a pleasurable stay!

Despite reading the previous review, i still thought to give it a shot at visiting Bellevue Manor as they told me over the phone when i called to enquire about availability that they have upgraded and freshen up the guesthouse in November 2011. By the way, it's now a very interesting wellness retreat with a very unique mindspa. I liked that they're going "green", using organic produce and products at breakfast and in the guestrooms also that it's very private and the cottages are situated in such a way, that we could sit on our patio of the cottage overlooking the stunning vineyards, mountains and garden, without seeing any of the other guests. Service was excellent & very friendly, setting was truly breath takingly beautifull. I was a bit dissappointed as we could only stay for 2 nights and not more as they were fully booked for the whole week. i will certainly return again and can recommend this stunning little gem.

Bellevue Manor is located half-way between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. We were the only guests staying at the guest house at the time and we felt a little uncomfortable being there on our own - as no-one was there to greet us upon arrival, we were not sure if anyone else was around. The guesthouse was roomy and well equiped, if somewhat tired. The location outside the town of Stellenbosch is close to a number of wine farms, but its location just off a main road meant that road noise could be clearly heard from room.

Dear guests,

Im so sorry to hear you felt a little bit lonely when you stayed with us, winter months are quieter than our season months where we're almost fully booked every night.

To assure you, the owner and his son lives on the property and the sometimes the managers stays over in one of the cottages too to receive groups arriving or anyone upon request, who do not prefer to have their own gate code and enter by themselves.

We have since your stay, updated the property, refreshed and updated interior decorating, flatscreen tv's, and have become a wellness retreat offering fabulous wellness packages together with opening up a very unique MINDspa at Bellevue.

Thank you very much for your feedback, we appreciate it and look forward to welcoming you back one day soon.

Warm Regards,

Debi
