We made our way from Muizenber to the lovely town of Stellenbosh. Through the tourist office we took a walking tour of the city with the very informative Sandra. Had a good lunch with lovely wine at a restaurant in town and walked around on our own for the rest of the afternoon. The tourist office is not independent of the places that they recommend and they seem to push you to certain places. I take their advice with a big grain of salt. The accommodations lady kept pushing a couple of B&B’s I told her I had seem a Protea hotel on the way and asked for the rate, she kept telling me about this 2 B&B’s. When we came back and Sandra was with us talking about hotels she asked her for the rate and she said it was 480 rand per person, but she had some great rates on the B&B!!! We drove over and it was 722 Rand for 2 in a nice large room with a terrace. No breakfast. Not luxurious even though it is a 4 star but such an improvement from last night! Large room, comfortable beds, clean with a nice bathroom with the usual amenities. Heater and air conditioning, flat screen TV, refrigerator and a kettle with coffee and tea. A very small pool and Massage rooms.

I stayed at the Protea Hotel Dorpshuis for two night in mid-February. My room on the main floor was really a suite with a large sitting area equipped with a wide screen flat TV. The bedroom was equally as large with a generous sized bathroom.

The room's decor is a little old-fashioned; but clean and serviceable.

The hotel is located at end of the short main street of Stellenbosch, as such, there is easy access by foot to the shops and great restaurants in town. Stellenbosch is safe after dark.

All the staff are very friendly especially the doorman. The night manager let me use one of the computers in the office one evening as the WiFi was not working.

A good, varied breakfast buffet is served.

This hotel has two types of rooms. Rooms 23-31 are 'duplexes' with a spacious sitting room and shower room on the ground floor, plus a huge bedroom with full bathroom on the first floor. These rooms are great! I didn't see the other rooms, but feedback below from another advisor was not so great.

The hotel has a good position with just a pleasant stroll into the centre of town, but it is near a busy road. Nonetheless, this is a town centre hotel, so if you want perfect peace a stay on a wine estate would be best.

Staff were friendly and helpful at all times. Clayton on reception is a star member of staff! Spa massage was great. Breakfast was fine. Swimming pool is small, but functional.

Just stayed in the Dorpshuis for 4 days and can definitely not recommend it. Firstly it is loacted at a busy intersection and traffic is quite noisy in the room. The modern rooms shown on their web-site where not available to us, instead we were in a very old and run-down room. There was mold in the bathroom and in general the room was not very clean (long black hair everywhere and a disgusting spare pillow to just mention two things). After we complained, we were moved to a different room, that was acceptable, but still run down and not very clean. For people that are concerned about security, while there is a security guard on-site, the rooms have very simple locks for both the main and the patio door. We were not able to lock the windows in our room. So it's not very calming in that respect. The advertised "pool" is not really a pool, but rather a little well...
Staff was overall friendly and helpful and the breakfast as well as restaurant food was good. However, I would definitely not go back to that Hotel next time.

I stayed at the Dorpshuis for a few days while at a conference at the University. The service was exemplary throughout my stay. For the price the room was outstanding - large, clean and with wi-fi access (small fee to pay). Although on the outskirts of town it was just a 15 minute walk to the University campus with a couple of good bars and restaurants (especially the Rock Room) very nearby on Dorp Street. Breakfast was substantial and showed a good use of local produce. The only drawback (security consciousness) I should imagine is an issue at any hotel where you stay in SA.

For our trip through the Westcape region we had booked another hotel in Stellenbosch as our first hideout but since that hotel was overbooked we were transferred to the Protea Dorpshuis Hotel. We were pleasantly surprised by the cosyness of the hotel and the very friendly staff.

Stellenbosch is conviently close to the airport and so this was a perfect start to the vacation. The hotel is again conveniently located on the edge of the old center of town and the area with all the action as in shops and restaurants is only a 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

The hotel is housed in a Victorian building which breathes loads of charm. It has of course been modernized but still can you see the pedigree. The room we had was very cosy with a small livingarea (with big flatscreen tv), a romantic bedroom and a big enough bathroom.

When we come back to Stellenbosch (and we will), we will probably come to this hotel again. It is just good value for money.
