As our car left the small town of Dungarpur along the country lane on the lake shore, we knew the Udai Bilas Palace was going to be something special. We were not quite prepared for the quiet, old-world (finished in 1911) luxury that we experienced. We choose a wonderful room overlooking the lake furnished with beautiful fabrics and antique furniture, enjoyed a snack by the pool and rented bikes to continue to explore the country lanes. The family continues to live in one wing of the palace and maintains organic gardens and a wonderful collection of their old vehicles and hunting trophies. In the morning, we toured the old palace high on the hill above town. The family moved down to the new palace in 1911, but left the old place intact. We were the only ones there and marveled at the views from the ornate rooms with frescos, tile work, carvings and paintings. The food was very good and dinner was served at an amazing lilly-pond table in an open courtyard. This was one of our best stops in our 5 weeks in India.

Room Tip: Lave views are wonderful. All are quiet and serene.

We stayed here for three nights before going on to Udaipur. The hotel is as described by other reviewers - a quiet spot on a lake at the edge of Dungarpur. The rooms, ambience and comfort are all first rate in this old palace building. It makes a nice contrast to the more brash 5 star modern hotels. We enjoyed perfectly adequate food and the attractive but unheated swimming pool was warm enough for this old softy to enjoy a swim. A very good massage and yoga on the lawn one night made for a very pleasant stay indeed. The Maharaja and his wife had dinner with us one night and we enjoyed a drink in his garage bar amongst his interesting car collection. We enjoyed a good walk around Dungarpur including getting Sunday Mass at the very crowded Sacred Heart Church in town.

We arrived to Udai Bilas Palace late one evening and it was magical - a superb setting with the palace overlooking a lotus flower filled lake complete with a stunningly beautiful temple built in the Lake. The rooms were of older style but perfectly clean and spacious. It has a wonderful pool overlooking the lake within the bird and flower filled grounds. We took a walk into the nearby village of Dungarpur, visited some nearby temples and also we were invited to take the launch out one afternoon. The Dining room is breathtakingly special, we have never seen such a room - even having seen a photo on their web site could not prepare for such an increible room - absolutely stunning - and the food was good too. On an extended trip based on the Golden Triangle this has to be included - so much more peaceful than Udaipur - which if visited will come as a shock after the tranquility of the Udai Bilas Palace in the quieter Dungarpur. Sorry for the late review - we visited here in September '09.

I went for my Honeymoon to Udai Bilas Palace in January 2011, stayed for 3 nights, and were blown away simply. Its a midblowing place, dont have words to describe. Fantastic service, superb ambience.. the palace is really beautiful. Swim pool is large and there are table tennis and lawn tennis facilities just next to it. A small pool side restaurant adds to the flavor. The open air Dining area was heavenly and the food cant be better.. nothing can beat it. We were really impressed with all this, but the best was yet to come. One evening we visited their theme bar (with vintage cars etc.) I can bet that no theme bar can be better then it. the ambience was extraordinary good. Will go back there for sure. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from our side

Room Tip: do not opt for the smaller rooms as they are really small.

We flew in to Udaipur and were driven down to Dungarpur. Immediately I got a good feel and the welcome was quiet but friendly; Harsh Dungarpur hovers around to just oversee one's arrival. Our suite was a round room with bathroom and tiny balcony overlooking the lake....bliss and peaceful with an ever changing scene. The Staff were helpful and friendly and it was good home cooking. The pool was experiencing some challenge and not entirely clear but as it was quite cool just sitting by it and looking out over the lake and the birdlife was perfect. We visited the family's ancient fortress palace and marvelled at all the beautiful wall paintings. We were entertained in The Garage which is in fact an eccentric museum of vintage and classic cars with the model of the bi-plane that HH Dungarpur had donated to the World War I war effort against Germany. This is a place to relax, perhaps one might embark on a town/village walk, there is the option to go on the lake in the palace launch which was pleasant....in February it was cold at night so have something like a padded jacket to wear. Heritage properties can sometimes not deliver but this one does with a bathroom that worked! I have experienced some that did not which is a touch frustrating. I just loved after breakfast making a tour of all the exotic birds and animals and observing the young children of the Dungarpur Family with the retainers. The warm sunshine in a lovely garden with centuries of heritage made it special. I have stayed at many of Rajasthan's palaces and forts but somehow I rated this highly.

Room Tip: Naturally ask for a lake view
