“An authentic Balinese experience all the way...”
Reviewed 7 September 2012

Those wanting a simple yet relaxing and caring place to stay, with daily yoga practice and conveniences just a few steps outside the ashram, this is the place to be! I couldn't have asked for a more soulful place to stay with friendly staff members of the ashram living out Gandhian principles, accessible acupuncture treatment 3 times a week and healthy local foods if you make prior arrangements. The sounds of the ocean to wake up to and if you're lucky to arrive during the full moon, you get just a stunning experience to soak yourself in moon glow and to awake to festive sounds, colours and beats where the temple just across from the ashram is at its climax in terms of activity! Come and support a living Balinese community keeping true to its tradition yet withstanding the test of (modern) times. With peace and love to all who will pass this route. OM SHANTI!

Room Tip: Every room is good. It's either you want to be closer to the ocean or nearer to the main house.

The Ashram is unique because it is a look into timeless Bali. The Ashram family invite you to be part of their life. You may dip in as far as you wish. The Ashram family invite you to eat with them the most delicious authentic food. They do not eat meat or drink alcohol and they request you do not do so either when you are in the Ashram grounds. But you don't need to because every meal has a variety of dishes and is a home cooked, flavoursome, Balinese delight. All meals are included in the price you are quoted; if you choose not to eat them just say you will not be there. You can help with the cooking if you want to learn the recipes. There are plenty of places just a little way up the main street where you can eat roast pig or duck and get free WiFi while you sip a cool Bintang beer. local emporium for everything you forgot and cold bottled water across the road. Plenty of places to dive locally or fish. The Ashram family will direct you or find you a reliable driver who can take you wherever you want to go or will take you to places that you never knew existed at a very reasonable rate, in comfort. I was happy to be taken out on my own to villages in remote places.
The situation is stunning in its simplicity; the flowers and vegetation are beautiful and natural. There is a spiritual element in everything that happens in the Ashram. Any guest may attend when the Ashram family gather for prayers: it is particularly special early in the morning and in the evening. They may have familiar elements woven in as well as traditional Hindu chants. Yoga is taught at every level and outsiders may join the classes in the beautiful surroundings by the ocean. Classes are free to residents. There are also special courses arranged with guest instructors.
I first visited on my own, 40 years ago when the Ashram was starting with Ibu Gedong Oka introducing students who were learning English to the western way of life. Through the teachings of Gandhi, both local Indonesian and visiting Western folk were all encouraged to look at the different worlds in which we lived and see how similar they are. She taught me as a westerner, bursting with energy and enthusiasm, how to sit and do nothing so I could experience everything about me and appreciate what I was part of. I still use it when I need to be calm! This Ashram is a place where everyone has their own experience and all the people I met there felt better for it.
The purpose of the Ashram is still to provide for the community that it is part of, both local and world wide. There are many educational and community projects which rely on the funds provided by the Ashram, some of which guests can see in action. It is a meeting place to share and enjoy and have a really good, different holiday whoever you are and wherever you come from. If you want a luxury spa hotel with everything decided for you this is not for you. If you want a real experience of the Bali called the Morning of the World stay here and see if you can tumble into its simplicity for a while.

Room Tip: Remember it is a simple life and there is a program of updating and refreshing happening. Ask for wh...
