“The perfect place to stay.”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

The Real Marina Hotel & Spa is a beautiful & well run establishment & well deserves it's 5 star status, that cater to your every whim. From facilities right down to staff this hotel is superb, rooms are immaculate & spacious with every mod com you could wish for as is your bathroom & always comfortable with air condition included in your package & not an extra as so many places. To give you some idea of the extra little touches they have over many rival's. My wife's birthday fell in middle of our stay on set day while getting ready to go out that night there was a knock on our door & there was room service with trolley with champagne on ice, birthday cake & chocolates & birthday card signed by every member of staff, that for me is going that extra yard & good reason why it gets a thumb's up from my wife & I, and why we have no qualm's i recommending this hotel to potential holiday makers. Try it you wont be disappointed.

Room Tip: We were on 4th floor which is top floor noise was non existent as all rooms sound proofed.

We had never been to Portugal before and had done a lot of research on hotels in the Algarve before we chose this one, and we weren't disappointed! The rooms are spacious and comfortable and cleaned every day. Breakfast was very good, lots of choice from fresh fruit and meats and cheeses to full English if you want it. I would advise a sea view though, as the rooms to the back of the hotel look out onto wasteland and its not very pretty! I would also suggest B&B only - there are so many restaurants and cafes to eat in the town and much less cost than full or half board in the hotel would cost.

What a nice place to stay. It really makes a stay in Olhao worthwhile. The staff can't do enough for you, quick service at all times. The restaurant is more expensive than the restaurants outside but that's a given. Nice new and clean facilities. The pool area is lovely and chilled, nice music playing throughout the hotel. Lounge/reception area is a bit dark to begin with, but given the wifi works best here it's not that bad once you sit there for a while.
Definitely request a sea view room, the view of the back of the hotel is a bit grim. Plus you have the sun shining on your balcony till at least 6pm.
Nice lunch at the pool bar/restaurant.
If you're looking for a relaxing stay close to the airport this would be a fab choice.

Despite being five star this hotel leaves me with the impression it is more about the architect’s ego than the customer. The reception foyer is large but very dark.

Go to the toilets on this floor and you open the door to total darkness at the end of a poorly lit corridor. Enter and eventually the lights come on automatically .. i found this quite creepy.

Adjacent to reception is the restaurant and bar area but these seem closed most of the times we have visited. Certainly if you sit in this area no one comes to take coffee orders or seems to even notice you are there.

We did go up to the pool area where they do serve customers with food and drink and the food was OK but this felt like a big anonymous chain .... what a pity

I have just read the poorly written review of this fantastic hotel by 'Princess192' posted 6 days ago, and although I wrote a review of this hotel in December 2013, having just arrived back from a 9 night stay from 19 May to 28 May with my wife, at the time 'PRINCESS' was there, I feel I have to respond due to 'her' inaccuracies.

We stayed in a double sea view room (333), not as regal as the suite we had earlier occupied, but still very well laid out, comfortable, and very very clean. A big thanks to our maid, who covered the whole wing. She made our room look unused each time we arrived back from our days outings.

We arrived at the Real Marina in the morning after a very early flight from Glasgow. The excellent, helpful and friendly reception staff instead of asking us to place our baggage into the store, advised us that our room was ready for occupancy. Wow!! We were delighted that we could unpack and fully relax straight away. Thank you Real Marina.

Our room although a double booked, had 2 single beds placed together, but this was resolved by the hotel who arranged for a top mattress to be placed over both to create the double bed effect.
Please be advised that we have returned to Real Marina several times because of the excellent service we have received in the past and continue to do so.

The weather for the first few days was a bit indifferent, and it did get rather windy. Princess's complaint about not being able to move sun loungers is unfounded, as she and others tried to move them to a space on the terrace which is restricted for tables and chairs for drinks and meals to be had, and also is a break out area for buffets and social meetings by large parties/groups/seminars. The hotel was protecting its space, and placing such a restriction by not allowing loungers in the said area is fully reasonable. Princess, if it gets too windy, go for a walk, and if the wind is sustained, a very long walk.

We did a B&B deal, and the 7 of 9 breakfasts we made were very good. Excellent quality and variety. Continental or cooked, and so much more. If your constitution allows it, even a cheeky wee Bucks Fizz if you wanted it. A little touch which keeps this hotel in the 5⭐️ category.

After breakfast we had a routine, a slow stroll into town, have a coffee, and maybe a cheeky Super Bock mini at the market cafés. Then off to Pingo Doce, to the deli counter, take our ticket to wait our turn. (The Portuguese love ticket machines). And then order our sandwich or baguette which we would takeaway for lunch. 2 large sandwiches, filled with tuna (atum) or chicken (frango), cheese or fish or whatever, total cost between €2.50 to €2.98. Great value! Then we would walk over the grass to Park Café to sit in the sun and each have a glass the size of a goldfish bowl filled with cold Vinho Verde. Cost €2.60 for both. Amazing!!

We spent our lunches and afternoons either by the pool, or went to the nearby beaches by ferry boat. Please be aware that the bars on the islands, and sun loungers on the beach are not fully up to speed until 1 June. Not sure if this is down to local licensing or not, but towels and a sunshade worked for us. Our picnic bag had cool refreshments within also. We ate lunch twice at the pool bar, and the selection before 3pm is very good, and filling. Again the bar staff are very very friendly courteous and helpful.

Evening meals. Olhao has so many places to try, and it is often individual preferences which dictate the style of restaurant you will eat at. Tripadviser to provide the top places, but we would thoroughly recommend Tapas E Lendas; Docas Pizza; Restaurate Barra Nova; and Pizza Na Pedra. We did try the new tapas place on Ave 5, called Marra i Mar, and my wife's fish dish and my black pork dish were easily the worst meals we have ever had in Olhao. In saying that, they are the only bad meals we have had in Olhao. The restaurant looks cool, nice decor, but it's exterior hides the sins of its dry bland and very overpriced food. Turn down the side street from this tapas place and you will find 2 far superior tapas bars. Tapas e lendes does excellent tuna pate, goats cheese with honey, fried cuttlefish, and fried sardines. The couvert is bread and cured ham, but of course you can have olives cheese and fish paste.

After our meal, we would return to Real Marina or to Emotions, which is a newly opened bar on the ground floor unit of the first Real Marina apartment block. Emotions is cheaper and much livelier than the hotel bar, and drinks prices are about 30/40% cheaper too. The owner of this bar will do well as it is much needed in this area, and it was good to see so many young local people come along to add to the atmosphere.

Overall the Real Marina is a great place to stay. Compare prices of the hotel with several websites including there own. Booking.com, and Alpharooms are very competitive. We are returning in November to a suite after some time in Seville. The Real Marina is a great base to discover much of the Eastern Algarve, and with car hire being very inexpensive we seek to do this later in the year.

Olhao may not be the most sparkling of cities, but it is truly Portuguese, and not an Ex Pat conclave which we so dearly hate. Brits who don't even say please and thank you in English never mind in Portuguese should stick to Albufeira et al.

Room Tip: Sea view, and stretch the budget to a suite.

The hotel is ok but I wouldn't really say it was 5*- it's clean and the rooms are a good size. The breakfast is nice. Reception is pretty inefficient and you have to pay 5 euros to use the iron! Be careful if you book a taxi through the hotel to and from the airport - we paid the driver cash for the price up transfer and the hotel was very insistent on check out that we needed to pay them for the transfer - after the manager was called they agreed that we had paid the driver but it was a very unpleasant ending to our stay. Also we had to confirm the return taxi 3 times as they kept losing the booking.

There's much nicer hotels in the Algarve to be honest.

We needed a relax and a bit of sun for 6 nights in May and this hotel certainly ticked all the boxes.
I agree with what people say about comfy places to sit and chat as the hotel does not have many indoor sociable areas like this. However, that suited us down to the ground as we like to be left alone. Really close to the airport, we live in the Midlands and it took only 6 hours door to door with no time difference- FAB. We paid for a junior suite Ria view. It was a fantastic size with actually 2 separate rooms so would be great for a family as there is a bed settee in the lounge. Personally we didnt use the lounge much but it was nice now and again to sit on instead of the bed. There is a second balcony but with no furniture on it was a little useless.
Bed was huge and very comfy, bathroom perfect. bathrobes and slippers along with the safe and individual air con finished it off. We were next to the lifts but we never heard a sound. It was so quiet the whole time. Breakfast had everything you could want including champagne. There were only boiled and scrambled eggs everyday and no one advises you can ask for others so that's up to you to find out yourself. We didn't east in the hotel as it seemed very expensive for what you could get outside, however my parents did one night and said it was very good. The pool bar food was nice and not too expensive along with the drinks, for a 5*.
The service was good but a little hit and miss with thing. Turn-down night service with pillow chocolates only happens when they remember and reception get a little confused with info sometimes but nothing to have an affect. Spa was good and the daily specials make it very worth a try. I loved the area. Plenty of places to walk around and explore, boat trips, islands to visit. The area is local non commercialised it was fantastic for us and due to this kept the prices down. It was one of the cheapest holidays we have had in a long time. I have reviewed some we visited. We will defiantly come back very very soon.

Room Tip: pay extra for marina view - rooms on the right have the sun in the morning and the ones on the left...
