We took a boat trip from Olhao through the Ria Formosa to Culatra. The skipper told us about life in the region which is a million miles from the beach life or markets. The island itself is a real beauty - no cars, endless sand, lots of chilled out bars. We stopped at a cafe and had great fish lunch for next to nothing. Could have stayed a lot longer but had too get a boat back to mainland. Life seems to have passed this part of the world by. Fantastic!

I visited this island while on a short break in the town of Olhao. It's incredibly beautiful and peaceful, there's no traffic at all, save for a local kid on a BMX bike who'd yell 'beep beep' as he cycled up behind you.

You can rent sun loungers on the beautiful quiet beach on Culatra, six quid a pop and worth it if you're going to spend lots of time on the beach. I wouldn't go to the island if you're expecting much in the way of touristy spots to entertain you - you're looking at a beautiful quiet beach, a few restaurants and snack bars and lots of peace and quiet.

We got the ferry over from Olhao, it took about 45-50 minutes and was a few quid return. You could also spend some time on Culatra and then hop on the ferry to see Farol on the same day, which I didn't have time to do this visit. Nice way to spend a quiet day.

Quite isolated, this island is a perfect place for a getaway from a busy city life! Boats, fishermen, seagulls and a very, very long beach! Lovely place for a long weekend!

Very nice island and beach, clean and well organized. Good choice of restaurants and lido with loungers and parasol at reasonable prices
