“Fawlty Towers in a good way!”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

We spent 4 nights in the hotel amidst the beauty of the trees and river. There is usually only one person doing the check in, restaurant waitering and bar service but its kind of amusing - they are all very friendly. The building is unusual and stunning, having been built in 1949. I think our bed was from 1949 because it was rock hard. We didn't let this spoil our stay though as it was a totally unique experience. There was usually a coach load of day tourists filling the restaurant at lunch time so we always ate out. One evening we returned late from a big road trip and were disappointed to be told we could not use the restaurant due to some other kind of function. The food we did sample was very pleasant - although service felt a little stiff at times. Don't expect a mini bar, air conditioning or a hair dryer screwed to the wall because they just aren't there! Tomar is amazing and this hotel fits well with it's unique charm.

The hotel has a lovely pensione atmosphere with vintage charm. When we checked in that evening there was a roaring fire in the lounge. The gentlemen who checked us in also acted as bellman and waiter. We did have a light supper that was quite good but felt a little awkward as we were the only ones in the dining room. The same scene was repeated for breakfast. It was the only hotel during our stay in Portugal that apparently did not have enough guests to serve a buffett breakfast. The service in the dining room was quite attentive.

The room was basic, clean and a great value for the money. As previously stated, there was a lovely balcony off of the room that opened up to views of the park.

The only downside is that even with GPS the hotel was a little tough to find. We ended up having to ask a local for directions.

This hotel is so lovely with a large veranda, private balconies and all set in a quaint little park. There are two fireplaces, a bar/ lounge and separate dining room. But the place is worn thin and moving into serious shabby. Breakfast is poor without any local freshness or flavors. The two nights we ate dinner there, the food was largely canned...very hard to believe in portugal! The fires were expertly tended by Albino, a professional and compassionate gentleman who also registered new guests, served the wine, acted as waiter and bused tables as well as tended the bar...all at the same time! You can walk everywhere from this hotel and the night view of the castle is magic.

Our affection for this hotel grows with each stay (our third) - great location, atmosphere and staff - love the older Portuguese style of furniture, log fires in dining room and lounge.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the park

This hotel is in a great location - on the island in a park in Tomar which is a very pretty little town. Other reviews talk of the hotel as having faded charm which is about right. But it was good value for money - nice room with a lovely balcony and there was a waiter like Manuel from Fawlty Towers who was very very charming and polite and helpful. Luckily no John Cleese!
Breakfast was rather dull compared to some places we have stayed in on this trip but adequate.
Tomar is lovely and has lots to offer in terms of sightseeing.
If you like a kingsize bed you wont get one here - just regular beds.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with a balcony at the front. Lovely view over the park

Arriving late in Tomar without a reservation, we had three levels of options: (1) the large modern Hotel of the Templars at 110/euro, two in town guest houses at less than 50 euro, no parking, small rooms, windows directly facing streets, etc., and this place. For 85 euro, we got a lovely room on the second floor with a blooming wisteria pergola over a large balcony with a view of the park. We were able to park for free directly in front of the hotel, and carried our suitcase up the stairs to our room. Yes, it is "dated", but we do not go to the Europe to experience new. Set in the island park, it is cool, quiet and private, yet an easy walk to the historic center. While the park is public, it had few people in it and felt private. We had dinner at a sidewalk cafe on Tomar's pedestrian mall, and a good breakfast at the hotel in the morning. Also, while I had my doubts about the mattress, it was in fact quite comfortable and we slept well in quiet with cool breezes coming off the balcony. Staff was very friendly, helpful.
My only complaint is getting to the hotel is not obvious: one crosses a bridge to the island that is verbotten to most traffic. Also, shower was small and funky: seemed to incorporate bidet with shower.

Yes, the location of this hotel is in a middle of an small island which has some charm. You may park the car right in front of the building. The personel is very friendly even though some of them may not speak English very well but they do try their best to help.

What I dislike mostly is the outdated furniture and decor which makes you feel like to stay in a hotel in 60's or every earlier. There is no air condition or refrigerator and I do not understand how they may get a Four Star rating. The mattress is extremly hard which is not comfortable at all. The isolation is not that good too but fortunately there were not many guests when we stayed there. During the weekend some young people are hanging around in the evening, also a bit noisy.

The breakfast is very simple and there is no any hot food except coffee or tea.

As a whole, considering the price and quality, I would not recommand this hotel. Of course you may find it pleasant if you do not mind those negative points I list above.
