“15th century church - Worth a visit while in Tomar”
Reviewed 19 January 2013

Worth a visit to this church while in Tomar.
Located in the old center, in the main square in front of the town hall. Its a catholic church built in 15th century by portuguese King D. Manuel I.
From the manueline architecture style to the gothic portal and the interesting tower it really worths for a visit.

You can assist to religious cerimonies as well.
Entrance is always free.

“Sorry to say this but...ho hum”
Reviewed 23 August 2012

Best viewed from the outside with its very distinctive tower. But inside - quite underwhelming. Unlike many Portuguese churches, there are no over the top saints' statues, paintings or ornaments. I swear you'll be heading for the exit in five minutes.

“15th Century Church with Gold and White Baroque altar”
Reviewed 20 March 2010

The 'Igreja de São João Baptista' ( Church of St. John the Baptist ) is situated in the centre of the beautiful City of Tomar and is located in the Praça da República ( the republic square )
Built in 1490, it is another example of the equisite 'Manueline' architecture of this era.
The interior is made up of 3 naves with pointed arches and it is worth noting the beautiful Gold and White Altar, the black and white diamond mosaics and the Octagonal Spire. There are several 16th Century paintings displayed including one of 'The Last Supper'.
It was classified in 1910 as a 'Portuguese National Monument' and is also famous for being the centre for the 'Festa Dos Tabuleiros' which takes place in Tomar every 4 years..........the next in 2011. It is open every day from 9.30am -12 and 3.30 - 7pm. Entry is free and it is well worth a visit during your stay in Tomar.
