“Hotel with spirit of old Portugal”
Reviewed 9 February 2014

The hotel located in historical center of Tomar, on pedestrian zone. Typical 19th century Portuguese building with antique furniture. Rooms are simple furnished, but clean and cozy. Very friendly and helpful staff. Guests with car can use public parkings nearby, but it was difficult to find a free place, we spent at lease half-hour for searching. The only one and serious problem we have meet is the soundproofing of the rooms. There were a lot of drunk and loud youth on the street and they had fun till early morning. Surrounding building resounded this noise and we could hear each word even with closed windows and couldn't sleep.

We stayed in several very nice hotels on our 3-week road trip, and payed more for those. We booked a few inexpensive places like this one and we did not expect anything luxurious. It was kind of funky, but that was fine. It was what we were expecting. The room was kind of rickety, an old, bouncy, noisy bed. A tiny bathroom with no place to put your stuff. It was cold. But the staff were friendly, and the common room where you had to go to get wifi, was big and comfy. You have to climb a lot of steps with your suitcase and if you come by car there is no parking. We had to park several blocks away and pull our suitcases. The breakfast was nothing special, but just fine considering the cost. Tomar itself was a disappointment, however. We arrived on a Sunday and had planned to explore the town the next day, but aside from the monastery on the hill, everything is closed on Monday. And I mean everything! Our guidebooks indicated that most places would be open, even in November. Not true.

We are a French couple from Montreal Canada, we did a trip of one month in Portugal this last October 2013 and we stayed in 17 hotels. We stayed at this hotel 1 night October 19th 2013. Price: 50 Euros with breakfast. Nice old house located on the pedestrian area. Pros: clean room, big bathroom, good breakfast, cable TV with many English channels. Cons: no elevator you have to climb with your luggage, Internet Wi-Fi weak in the room you have to go in the bar, no counter in the bathroom to put your stuff, small room, hard bed, no parking available. During we were out for dinner, someone came in our room and try to steel money in my wallet. As I had only some Visa receipts there, they only took these. When we told this at the reception the morning after, the woman there listen to me and said nothing. Not even a “sorry”. We don’t recommend that place because of this lack of security and the poor concern about the robbery we had.

We stayed here for one night during a weekend in Tomar. In summary, the hotel is very well located (although you cannot reach it by car and there is no parking) in the centre of the town and all the staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are what you pay for: ours was small (but we were warned and allowed to look at the room before we elected to stay) with a cunningly designed bathroom fitted in which was really only suitable for small people, while my parents room was much larger. Both rooms were very clean. Breakfast was good, apart from the coffee, and there is an honesty bar. Public rooms are very pleasant. The place is looking a little bit tired in some areas, but this gives it some character. Overall recommended, but do not expect 5-star comfort or amenities: but what do you expect for €45 per night per couple including breakfast?

This is your typical European pensione. It is in a great location on a pedestrianised street (NB if you get a taxi, but it's not a long street) just a few mins walk from Praca da Republica which is at the heart of Tomar.

I chose it based on the reviews on TA and booking.com, I subsequently found that it is also recommended in the Lonely Planet guide.

The main places you will want to visit day and night are all just a few mins walk from the hotel. The train that takes you around the town for 2.5 Euros and takes about 1hr is well worth the time. It goes from Praca da Republica which is at the end of the road the hotel is on.

The pensione is an old building, as such there is no lift. There's also no a/c in the room, although I didn't find this a problem as the wooden shutters kept the room nice and cool.

There is no hair dryer in the room and for some reason my travel hair dryer wouldn't work in this hotel, but they have some at reception that you can borrow.

Wifi is available in the reception area only, there is a comfortable lounge where you can sit to log in to the wifi.

Breakfast is worth mentioning: ham, cheese, bread, cornflakes, pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt and boiled eggs. I thought there was a great choice and plenty to fill up on. Juices, tea and coffee are also available.

There is also a back entrance to the hotel which is handy. It's best to exit down the stairs near the room where they serve breakfast once you've checked in and you'll find yourself on the street leading straight down to the water. Note that the restaurant (Tasquinha da Timas) which is the last on your LHS before you reach the road is good, I have put a separate review on TA about it.

All in all I was really pleased with this choice of hotel. It's not luxurious by any means, but it is clean, well located and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Good VFM.

Nice, clean, small hotel in the middle of the old town of Tomar. Very old and charming building. Friendly staff. The hotel has everything you need, though a little worn and torn - and the price is very reasonable. Bed a little narrow for two people, and street in front of the hotel quite noisy during the night. Breakfast OK. No hotel car park, but never worry; plenty of parking space in the streets around. Wi-fi only in the bar area.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the back yard are quieter.

A great location in a very nice town with an amazing 'castle' overlooking everything.

The rooms are classical 18th century with 3 floors and no lift (as in the 1880's)....apparently.

Very friendly owners and staff, and good breakfasts at a very low cost.
