I have written the following in what I trust is a balanced review of the hotel. I have as ever done my review, compared to various other 5 stars that we have stayed at. We have also stayed 4 times at the various Sensatori hotels, so will use those to some degree as a benchmark. We treated ourselves to a swim up room ( my wife, 16 year old daughter and myself. Hence had to pay for 3 adults.
1- we stayed in room 2112 July 9 - 16th..Daughter, whilst having to pay an adult price, had to sleep on a pull out camp bed. Not good or comfortable.
2 - the rooms are adequate, but offer no privacy between the sleeping area and the bathroom, since segregated by a glass sliding door.
3- swimming area lovely, but not easily accessible if you happen to be located on the top floors of the swim ups.
4- we were advised by Thomsons that no children under 16 would be able to stay at swim ups. Whilst this maybe true from Thomsons- it most definitely is not from other tour companies. As such, several small children were in the swim ups. Not overly an issue for us, but, if we are told no under 16's - that should mean no under 16's.
5- main buffet restaurant. This was the worst part of the holiday for us. We met some lovely people from South Wales who described it best. Albeit supposedly 5 star, the restaurant was like a Butlins canteen!!! When you get to the entrance, you are NOT shown to a table and have to at times almost fight with the Russians and Romanians to get a table. The food in the main caters for Eastern European tastes. The Eastern Europeans will not queue and will just push in and literally grab handfuls of food. We tried all types of food, but in our humble opinion - we did not enjoy. As per the family we met from South Wales, we dreaded going to the main buffet restaurant at night. That should not be the experience for staying in a 5 star. We even had one Russian family move onto our table one evening, whilst we were up getting our food!!
6- service. At times the service was very good and very polite and very friendly. At other times the dead opposite. It was down to which person you were served by.
7 - minor quibble. Sea lovely and warm but very stoney and misty.
8- in our room, we had an infestation in the shower room of ants or similar. Called reception and tried to explain the issue. A maintenance man came up with a new shower head...! When I showed him the ants he just shrugged his shoulders and left. I then had to go to reception and try to explain in best pigeon English the issue. Eventually was given a small tin of raid insect repellent to try and get rid of the ants. It did, for a few days.....!
9 - entertainment. 3 nights good. Especially gala, 3D disco and street dancers. Other nights either average or poor. Again caters in the main for the Eastern Europeans.
10 - the Thomson rep did not turn up at the welcome meeting at the time described. Later that day she advised other guests she was not told she had to be there and blamed her managers. Strange experience.
1- although we had a swim up, during the morning and up to mid afternoon, we sun bathed on the grassed area near the water slides. They were great fun.
2- Stefan, the life guard on the slides was excellent and very friendly.
3 - water slides were excellent.
4 - bowling alley..very good. 5 euros per person per game.
5 - since the main restaurant in our opinion was so bad, we paid for 2 nights in the Pen Tai (Chinese restaurant) and Florian (Italian). These are the onsite al la carte restaurants that you pay 10 euros per person for, on top of anything else that you may have already paid for. These were good with excellent service.
So, overall Cornelia De Luxe was ok. Would we go back there? Based on the above observations and experiences, then no. Sensatori does it much better. Is the Cornelia a 5 star? Of course this is subjective, but we would say probably no more than a 4 star should be appropriate. As above, the worst experience was the buffet restaurant for us.
It felt that being Brits in this hotel, you are treated as second rate citizens with the Eastern Europeans treated with a higher level of importance.
Finally going home, we were unfortunately flying with Thomas Cook. The experience at Antalya airport was shocking and the Thomas Cook team were awful. We were left queuing since Thomas Cook had messed up other passenger tickets and as such we and other passengers were left stuck in a queue. When we eventually got to the counter, my wife, daughter and I were all split up and unable to sit together. We had not been allowed to previously book our seats before flying. I would never ever want to fly with Thomas Cook again.
