“Nice place, if you don't touch anything”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2010

It ought to have been great. Turkish hotel food of the year winner, luxury all-inclusive hotel.

Except under the superficially shiny skin, there lurked a massive outbreak of gastroenteritis, a disease that is only spread where hygiene is not up to scratch.

The hotel professes high standards of cleanliness, but look around you when you are there. Are surfaces regularly cleaned and disinfected? Do ungloved staff hands find their way into the buffet food? Do you see anyone wash their hands when they take the trash out?

While we were there, over 50 people of different nationalities (as well as staff) were seriously ill, some badly enough to end up in hospital. The hotel tried to disclaim all responsibility, so made no attempt to increase its cleaning and disinfecting regime, meaning that yet more people were exposed and fell ill. They tried to claim it was an illness brought by a British person into the hotel, and yet hospital tests showed guests riddled with amoemba and norovirus, which are only picked up from unhygenic conditions.

Had it been a cruise ship, everyone would have been taken off at the next port, and the ship disinfected from top to bottom. Instead, the hotel just insisted its procedures were up to scratch, and left it at that. What they ignored was that the procedures were being ignored.

It is impossible to say who started the outbreak, but it is clear that it spread like wildfire because of the underlying lack of hygiene in the hotel.

It is a real shame, as apart from the rip-off prices for anything non-inclusive, it was a great hotel, if too noisy at night to sit on the balcony.

But why take the risk? You may not know that you won't fall ill in another hotel, but you know that it could happen at any time at the Ela. Such a shame the management didn't put their hands up, and knuckle down to the problem, because then I'd be recommending you went.

The hotel is extremely huge and is located in Belek, near to the city of Antalya .The design of the hotel is inspired by traditional Ottoman architecture and I felt like I was a Sultan. I stayed there with one of my friends who is disabled and he lives in the UK. During our holiday I assisted my friend and we spent a lot of our time at the hotel and using the amenities. This gave me the opportunity to understand how good the service was.
The room that we stayed in was very good and comfortable and we were able to access the pier from it. One of the disadvantages of this hotel is that there was no equipment to assist a disabled person to go into the swimming pool. The other disadvantages are that there wasn’t any handles on the disabled bed unfortunately. However the staff were very helpful and the housekeeping team provided temproray special handles on the bed. Thank you again to them.
In addition to the extremely delicious buffet food offered three times a day, there was a luxury service offered at the pool bars for snacks. On a last note, I would recommend this hotel to anyone whether they are a couple or a family.

I booked this 10-day hotel destination just a few days before our wedding in mid-September through Thomsons (Classic Collection Holidays). It was advertised as 5 star, all-inclusive luxury hotel, which indeed it was! We had never taken an all-inclusive holiday before but in future, this will be the type of holiday we would go for. Following an efficient check-in we arrived at our room (forest view, amazing!) within minutes. The room was very spacious with a high standard of interior decor and fittings. The hotel staff had been alerted to our recent marriage and had placed a large bottle of champagne in the room, together with a large bowl of assorted fruit and assorted local sweet cakes together with a fridge full of assorted drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) plus an assortment of bottled drinks on the table (Gin, Vodka and Cocktail)!
The room service staff had also arranged (on the bed) an artful presentation of towels in the shape of swans with rose petals and two small heart-shaped cushions!! Apparently towel art is something the staff arrange on a daily basis and guranteed to raise a smile. The rooms are cleaned on a daily basis to a high standard by very friendly staff.
The hotel catered for every need imaginable (checkout its own website) for everyone - couples, singles and families and the location is right on the mediterranean. The temperature throughout our stay averaged around 90F every day.
The food was amazing, varied and always presented well in the various restaurants and poolside bar. Because we were all-inclusive all our drinks were included day or evening with the choice of either self service at the poolside bar or waiter service which was always prompt from polite staff. The buffet restaurant and poolside bar restaurant staff were equally polite and helpful and seemed to particularly enjoy meeting british people, not least to brush up on their english speaking skills! We tried to exchange a few words in Turkish each day with the staff (good morning, hello, thank you...) but not an easy language to learn! We struck a friendly, pleasant rapport immediately with our young table waiter in the buffet restaurant and he always made sure that we were directed to a table for all our meals.
There are lots of facilities for families with children including a creche/play/pool area and nightly evening entertainment e.g. acrobatic groups and ballroom dancing exhibition. There is also an open-air cinema area complete with cosy armchairs on the lawn with firework dispays on some evenings!
The beach area is sandy and stretches for miles in either direction and the hotel has its own small wooden pier for a small extra charge with sun-loungers and a bar but most people seem happy enough to use the hotel beach sun-loungers or likewise around the resort's pools.
Unfortunately I became ill after 7 days (acute appendicitis) but thankfully there was a nurse on duty in the hotel and he quickly arranged for a doctor to examine me and subsequently arranged to transfer me to a nearby hospital for surgery - a honeymoon to remember for lots of reasons!
Holiday Insurance...a good idea! and thankfully the Insurance company dealt with the costs and arranged for my wife and I to extend our holiday by 3 days at the same hotel, also paid by the Insurance company as I wasn't allowed to fly home for 6 days after surgery. Thankfully there was a very good language interpreter at the hospital, which made my experience so much the better and the care I received in the hospital was excellent. The same nurse from the hotel even came to see me in hospital to see how I was feeling. Like our young waiter this male nurse was polite and friendly and my wife and I feel we are richer for this experience (including the 4 days in hospital!), not least because of our two new-found friends from southern Turkey.
Our only criticism was with a couple of reception desk staff at the hotel whose basic public relations manner could have been better but otherwise we would definitely return to this hotel resort in the future, probably with some of our children and grandchildren.

The hotel was excellent. Fully justifies the class of 5 stars. The huge complex, beautifully arranged, hygiene is an excellent level. The rooms are neat and clean. The beach is maintained, the sea warm but hazy because of the sand. The hotel staff was polite, neat and speaks several languages, unlike the rest of the population. Slight advantage in serving with Russian guests, the hotel staff complaint. As far as food is concerned, you can never be hungry, because it is abundant throughout the day. Are represented and all kinds of international cuisine and dishes are varied. It takes several days to try out much of the food and still not be able to try everything because it is always something new and new! :) Drink in bars and restaurants varied and well. The hotel is suitable for families with children because it has all the required facilities. Those who are accustomed to an active vacation with a sunrise tour of operations, they must forget that since the hotel is 35km from Antalya (in addition to the poor transportation to the city), and the closest center of Belek is 2km away, and there is placed a small number of shops , completely uninteresting to tourists. Any recommendations if you want a passive home with plenty of food and drinks! :)

We went to the hotel the last 10 days of August. It wasn't too crowded so we had a very pleasant stay. The hotel is VERY big and we like to go to smaller hotels so staying where the Lake Houses are was very peaceful and nice.
The pools are very crowded and you have to get to the pools early to get a bed otherwise you end up stying in a place where it's just so hot.
We love the sea and the sea in Turkey is not clear at all, actually when you swim I promise you you can't even see your feet however it is very warm. The sand is dark and not nice.

The hotel is very clean but to be honest a little run down. The selection of food is enourmous however I suggest you eat what they cook fresh that day otherwise the next day they become stews or meat balls! The main restaurant is massive and it's not a peaceful time to eat as you have hundereds of people walking pass you every minute and children shouting.
The Lake House family rooms are wonderful with lots of space and looking over the pool. The cleaning lady would always arrive so late in the day which was pretty annoying. The air conditioner kept braking down every other day and then we would be without for a day which is a total nightmare as it is SO HOT in Turkey.
The children loved the hotel as there were so many things for them to do and the hotel is very organised in doing different events for the hotels guests. The hotel have wonderful kept gardens and probably one of the best hotels in the area. The pools are incredible and all 1.20m (approx)high so you can always touch the bottom.
The staff are very nice and always very helpful even thought a lot of them do not speak very good English. The staff are terrified of the Russians as they are very hard on them (so they told me). The hotel occupies 75% of Russians between June and August! I have nothing againts the Russians, each country has thier culture and behaviour however they are not well mannered and definately not friendly which makes the holiday a bit tough. There a few Europeans so one can have their children play with ours which is also a point why we all go to these big hotels.
The reception staff are COMPLETLY incompetent and you always have to go to Human Resorces as they are the only one's who understand you. If you want to go out of the hotel and organise something the hotel will not do it for you, you have to go through your agency which I thought was really unoganised of them. There where a few English guests who were furious with Reception and all said that once you paid and where about to leave the hotel couldn't care less about your problems!
Would I recommend this hotel??? I am happy I went but I would not reccomend the hotel to my friends as I think there are too many Russians and no because the Managers of the hotel are very rude and only think of people who have a lot of money, that's why they have the russians! Also outside the hotel there is nothing to do and DO NOT go to the dolphin show as you will be very sad for the animals.

We have just came back from this hotel. Hotel is great, but it is more suitable for families with kids. There are different kinds of entertainments every night. Beach is ok, pools are great. All inclusive service is real all inclusive, with different types of beverages. Food is also fantastic. It is far away from the centre of Antalya, about 35 km. So if you choose this hotel you can account on being there during all day. For the couples is a little bit boring. About 90% of the guests are Russians, most of them are ok, but some of them are real ingots, the best solution is to ignore them. I can recommend the hotel to everyone.

Situation: a couple of 38 and 34 years old with two kids of 4 and 1.5 years old for 10 days from 26/08/2010
FIRST CONTACT

reception: people in front of us were directly served. We were with 2 children and they told us to wait on a coach.

On the reservation sheet from the tour operator, we specifically asked to get a room at the lowest level possible to avoid climbing stairs with a stroller. Well, on the lake houses with two storeys, we got... the upper floor. When we start complaining we were told that they were full. I didn't believe it.

FACILITIES

The rooms are very comfortable. We received two connecting rooms that was very handy to let the kids sleep why we still could enjoy the balcony.
We resided in the most privileged part of the resort, called lake houses, where it is impossible to get something to drink. A small bar is well present but nobody runs it. You have then the choice to go back to your room (mini-bar) or walk to the main pool where the pool bar is always open but it is at least 5 min walk.
The pool is very nice but the children pool is to be avoided at all cost.

CHILDREN ACTIVITIES

Everland Q is the place for children. It is announced as open from 9.00 until 0.00. The thing that you should know is that limited activities are organized for children: one from 10.30 to 12.00 and a second one from 15.00 until 16.30. Outside those hours children are left in several rooms with surveillance: TV room, video games room or in a small indoor recreation room, called playbarn. During lunch (12.30-15.00) and dinner (18.00-20.00), parents come with their children to eat at the children restaurant. At night, the classic mini-disco takes place. Also there is no group atmosphere you should expect from a mini-club. So my kids were not felling integrated and refused to stay.
In overall, the hotel and personnel are not very friendly: a small example, waiters always bring a wine glass full of water for the children. How do you want them to drink that?

COMMUNICATION

The issue is not really about Georgians, Russians or even Turkish people, it is more about the hotel that speaks Turkish and Russian. English is not much used in this resort.

FOOD

From a very expensive 5* resort you could expect to have variation in your plate. Well you are far away from that. The food is always identical. No effort has been made to have theme nights like you could find elsewhere.
On the other hand, there is at any time a place where you can eat. From snacks to patisserie.

ACTIVITIES AND EXTRA SERVICE

Obviously when you want a out-of-the-box service you have to either pay for it or have at least 3 people asking each other what to do.
Here are some examples : Segway rentals : 20Eur/30 min.; picture taken per photograph 12 Eur; kids banana boat 10eur for 10 min.
So everything is done to compensate the all inclusive. And I don't count extra charges for special beverages. I could read on the wine card that a French wine was at 245 Eur (not an exclusive wine).

STAFF

When waiters see you coming at a restaurant or somewhere to sit, they just stare at you. You have a baby and you need a chair. "Just do it yourself", should they be thinking. Then at the moment you have made most of the job, by grabbing the baby chair almost to the table, they start helping you. It happened every time we went to the restaurant and most of the times when we ate outside.
I could never tell who is part of the animation team. The reason is that resort is so big that it is difficult to create a group atmosphere. Also the animation team was not coming to the tables in the restaurant like in other hotels to make contact with parents or even better with children.
