The Grand Ucel Hotel
Ranked #98 of 102 Hotels in Oludeniz
Reviewed 1 September 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the grand UCEL in late August this year and the write up said the hotel had just been refurbed and was a 3* so we thought after a refurb it would be almost a new hotel to stay at. We got that wrong it is quite a scruffy hotel the finishes are not up to western standards and being a builder they stood out to me, that being said after our initial impression of oh no this isn't very nice we settled in and had a great holiday the pool area is fine the location is great as you are in the middle of fethiye, hisaranou and oludeniz and we would highly recommend turkey and we will definitely be back, our first trip has been fantastic the weather is unbelievable and the people are so nice and they adore children.i would like to add the breakfast here is a joke it is salad everyday watermelon and some weird cheese and processed meat not what we are used to and generally don't have it in two weeks it hasn't changed once and the last few day there has been two weddings which completely take over the pool and restaurant area, they shunt all the sun beds up onto a raised deck of about 1.5 meters which is crap for me with two children under 5 and you are also about a 20-30 meter walk away from the pool which again isn't ideal we can't sit on our beds a by poolside within reach of the kids I found this unacceptable and will not be back as my child safety is second to a poxy wedding

We have just returned from a two week stay at the Grand Ucel, 16 of us in all, and every last one of us loved this hotel immensely and are already planning a return.

To begin with we booked directly with the hotel, namely Rhiannon, who was a pleasure to deal with and dealt with any questions or problems promptly.

When we landed at Dalaman, our transfer was waiting, as arranged by Rhiannon when booking; and took us to the hotel. When we arrived in the early hours we were all very excited as first impressions were very grand indeed, as was meeting the big man (Polat) for the first time who was very welcoming. We were checked into our rooms, with the help of plenty of friendly staff and managed to squeeze in a quick drink before bed - which the staff were only too pleased to serve.

I cannot say enough about having the Aqua Park so close, especially when trying to keep kids entertained; I also have to mention Tanju (Curly) and the other guys on the aqua park who were brill with the kids, even playing with them after the park had shut!

The guys on the bar, Enes and Sal, are more than just staff but we now consider them our “cousins” :) and would welcome them at our homes anytime…I would also recommend taking part in the Guests v Staff football game too, they get very annoyed at losing to drunken, overweight and unfit Englishmen, ha-ha!! The guys in the restaurant (Kerim, Azad, Burat, Mumu) may only speak a little English but we could still understand how the Turkish sulk, haha. All top guys! Lol

All in all, this place is fantastic, the location and especially the staff are the best I’ve ever experienced in 7 visits to various areas in Turkey. The location enables you to experience different types of holidays too, i.e. quieter (Ovacik), beach front (Olu Deniz), party time (Hisaronu), harbour (Fetiyhe).

In conclusion, we would recommend a stay to anyone and would like to thank everyone at Grand Ucel for a fantastic 2 weeks!

Room Tip: Whilst we didn't really eat at the hotel, we can't comment; however, nearby we can definitel...

Hotel was 80% Turkish guests during our stay in early July with the rest being mainly Scandinavian with a few English/Scottish families.
The hotel's food was buffet and ok, but not a single concession to UK tastes/diet - not even milk put out for the tea made with rubbish yellow label tea bags. Worse, the breakfast buffet was absolutely identical every single day we were there - the only thing that seemed to change was how they sliced the watermelon! The buffet is comprehensive, and does have sliced bread and a toaster, boiled eggs etc, but very little fruit, very few cereals(with UHT milk),and loads of olives, herbs, Turkish cheeses, Turkish spam(can't really call it ham)/luncheonmeat, etc.
Only 1 member of the hotel staff spoke any useable English - he was the day receptionist and was exceptionally helpful. Having said that, the owner floated about quite often and his English is good, but he's not obviously the owner although you eventually work out who he is if you're observant.
Our standard double was ridiculously small once the 3rd bed for our 7yr old was inserted, and the balcony was pointless. But everything worked and was in an ok state of repair, although the bathroom extractor was very very noisy. The rooms are basic and perfectly acceptable, but a million miles from luxurious. They're probably on the slope down towards needing a re-furb, but not tired enough to really disappoint anyone other than an inveterate snob.
The rooms didn't have blackout curtains, but some cream coloured viscose drapes which meant you may as well be sleeping on a sun bed once 4.30am has arrived - it is like daylight in the rooms.
The worst part of the hotel, though, was the noise from music: not only do they play Turkish music(I don't think I heard more than 30mins of English music the whole fortnight we were there)very very loudly around the pool all day long - to the point you really cannot hear yourself think, or even talk if you are too close to the speakers by the pool bar. In addition, the music plays very loud until very late at night - and if there's a wedding or other function you can forget any thought of sleep until about 3am, as happened on the 1st night we were there.
The pool is excellent - plenty of loungers with cushions. The waterpark is excellent - plenty of loungers without cushions.
The hotel is a 30 minute walk from Hisaronou - and the road down there is covered with restaurants and bars, as well as all manner of shops selling everything you're likely to need. turn right out of the hotel and 100m away is an Aldi-type supermarket selling most stuff you might want to buy at a fraction of the price of the other street vendors and rip-off merchants. If you want English food - especially an English breakfast - you will be spoiled for choice. If you want anything sophisticated you will be utterly disappointed. The local buses cost approx. 2TL/person for the trip to Hisaronou and about 4TL to Fethiye.
Lastly, unless Black Tower and Blue Nun are your thing avoid Turkish white wine.

Room Tip: For noise reasons choose a room that faces away from the pool/garden area - and avoid the front of t...

We stayed at the grand ucel from 8th to 22nd June and had the best holiday ever. We been to turkey many times before and stayed in some posh hotel but we wanted a cheap bed & breakfast, so we could eat out at night. I wasn't expecting the hotel to be great after reading some reviews but we loved it. Rooms are basic but are a good size and clean. Fridge was empty so we went to the local supermarket and stocked up on water and drinks. The pools are lovely. 2 pools one for sunbathing and swimming and the aqua park which we got free as staying in the hotel. The aqua park was great the kids n my husband just loved it. Our little boy is 2 and loved the small pool and slides.

The hotel is in an excellent location with the local buses (dolmus) stoping right outside. You can either go to hisoronu or olu deniz. Both places are packed with resturants, bars and shops. Very lively and great atmospheres for couples and families. A good bar in hisoronu is the Fez, good beer and lovely staff. They also do a quiz every Thursday which is fun and it has park on back for kids to play. Good resturants are the Shine for Indian food and the festival for Turkish opposite the fez bar.

You can eat for around £45 for a family of 4 inc drinks. Lots of places do 3 courses for 20lira which is £8 !! And a beer is around 6lira so £2.30. We loved this resort and hotel and are going to go back next year. Don't be but off by people's poor comments on here. This hotel is excellent value for money. It's a 3 star but is clean, in a good location and he staff are lovely. It does have a lot of Turkish families on holiday there. So if u like a typical British hotel then this is prob not for you. But we loved it.. Xxxx

Just got back from our 9 night stay at this hotel. Was a bit apprehensive after reading a couple of reviews but i can safely say we had a great time. The staff were really helpfull, the maid cleaned the rooms daily and clean towels ,the rooms are basic but clean, so dont book if your expecting luxury. The waterpark was great fun for the kids and again staff were very pleasant and kept the park clean and tidy. We had breakfast each morning which had a wide variety, including jacket potatoes one day ?? wifi was free but not very good, when i enquired about air con we got it free as we booked with Travel Republic so that might be worth a look.Really pleased with the hotel and would consider going back again. Exchange rate was much better there than in england so would advise to change your money in turkey, had the most amazing evening in The Hangout which is in oul deniz over looking the beach. The food was reasonably priced and lovely, the view watching the sun go down was breath taking, and they recline the roof and sides so you have the perfect view. Had an amazing time so much to do.

We had high expectations of this hotel and were looking forward to staying there, being in a large group of 13( with 5 children under 6) but before we had even arrived, we were being ripped off by them. We booked a minibus taxi through the hotel and they insisted we pay them and not the driver (we later found the reason to be the difference of 120TL! They quoted us 270TL and the driver said 150. Bad to say the least.

We decided to stay half board and food was adequate. Only tea available is Turkish tea and no hot milk at breakfast. The hot food served at breakfast was not very appetising - a choice of 3 hot dishes- nothing vegetarian. Dinner was also average- lots of choice of cold dishes- salads, sauces, vegetables but very little variety on hot food and again, nothing vegetarian.

We were excited to read 'garden views' and 'deluxe room' on our reservation forms, but in reality, the rooms were very basic, small and not very deluxe at all. No tea/coffee facilities and TV all Turkish except World News.

There seemed to be a Large group of young people staying at the hotel and our room was on the corridor of there's. during our entire first night, all they seemed to do was run up and down the corridor and scream and shout. None of us slept a wink. We complained to reception, who did nothing and didn't really seemed bothered that we were very unhappy.

Only one person at reception spoke and understood English, which was frustrating when trying to communicate.

The children loved the aqua park and this was a lovely area for them to play.

The man working the pool restaurant tried to overcharge my husband by 10TL for Chips and luckily he saw the actual price on the menu and pointed it out to him.

The check out is very early (12pm) and our flight wasn't until the evening. We had no option but to ask for a late check out. We had booked 3 rooms at this hotel and thought that they may take this into consideration, but no, another money making scam. We were charged 60TL for the extra time. Totally ridiculous.

The hotel lies on a main road, which is convenient for public transport and being halfway between Oludeniz and Fethiye was good also. Not much else around that you can walk too though.
