“Excellent for price”
Reviewed 15 October 2012

When I arrived in Buenos Aires, was looking for a hotel that was not extremely expensive but at the time was a comfortable and had good service. Circus, was that, nice rooms, swimming pool, good breakfasts and a location that although is not perfect, is ideal if you are a tourist, because San Telmo is a neighborhood which is in a perfect location for tourists.

Really, the days I spent in Circus, were perfect, their areas made me feel comfortable.

After reading some of the reviews we thought this place might be too noisy and load for our honeymoon. But this certainty wasn't the case. The place was great, quiet, clean and friendly.
We only rated the place with 4 because w felt that the rooms were a little small and breakfast could have been a little richer...
Most say that the staff was very friendly but especially Carla, that was the nicest.
Tip for the room- we got room 36, facing the inner yard and the pool. It was nice and quiet.

We arrived at the hotel about 9am and although we check in wasn't until 3pm, offered to hold our luggage to enable us to go sightseeing. We stayed in a spacious double room on the third floor overlooking the street. The double glazing was sufficient to cut out most of the noise and we never had a problem getting to sleep. The room was clean and serviced daily. There is a restaurant attached which offers basic snack food - nothing too fancy but inexpensive.

The hotel is located in San Telmo and is just a short walk from many bars and restaurants. The grid system of streets makes it very easy to navigate.

We found the hotel staff to be very friendly and attentive and spoke excellent English, which was good considering our Spanish was very basic!

Overall this is an excellent place to stay in Buenos Aires at a very reasonable price.

This was my first hostel of a 6 month trip and I liked it better than other place I stayed in Buenos Aires - here they have friendly international staff (but were not very good at local knowledge unfortunately), dorm rooms quiet as not busy road outside, nice linen used in dorms, clean en suite facilites in dorm but not much privacy (lock didn't work for shower but not really a prob), lockers in rooms good size for full 70 litre rucksack, breakfast included (but okay, not that healthy - dulce de leche, banana and bread is yum but if staying for longer than a few days could get boring). Common area was good in Feb - swimming pool to cool off (it's small, don't expect swish pool for this money but it looks good), comfy sofas, although the 2xPCs were a bit rubbish (one didn't allow hotmail for some reason and no facilities for Skype).

Didn't find the overall area very safe after say 8pm - let that be a warning if you plan to walk home from the city centre!

Also be careful when sitting in the kind of patio/porch area as when I stayed there a couple told me that they watched people coming off the street, wander around the common areas and then walk out - one girl had her laptop stolen.

PROS:
1. The location of the hotel is good - not great - not really in the nice part of San Telmo but within walking distance of the major attractions which is great.
2. The hostel is very quiet. We were in a private room so it was more like a 3* hotel for us.

CONS:
1. There was only 1 staff member that was helpful. Besides her the rest were not helpful at all. 2. The Internet was down, literally 80% of the time we were there. It was really annoying and difficult to do simple things - online check in for flights, internet banking.
3. We booked this hostel specifically because it says on it's website that it runs tours. It runs no tours it just gives you contact details for tour companies.

If you are going to book this hostel note: there is an AWESOME steak restaurant at 855 Defensa called DesNivel which was amazing!! The best steak we have ever had - and as Aussies we have had a lot of steak!!!!

End of the day we wouldn't book again - it just wasn't anything special.

Circus is a small hotel in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. It seems to be run for mostly younger travelers but four of us in our 60's stayed there for one week. We found it comfortable, clean and well run. We liked the location because it is in the center of the old part of the city. We enjoyed walking the neighborhood. There are many small shops, restaurants etc in the neighborhood. The hotel arranged for a reliable remise to and from the airport.

If you like staying in small reasonable hotels in the older sections of town you should enjoy this one.

The only downside for us was the level of noise in the common room. The young staff and customers evidently enjoyed loud music.

We were there during a heat wave so the electricity in the neighborhood went down frequently. That was not the fault of the hotel but did leave us hot and sweaty for several hours. But find yourself a good Gelato shop at you will survive the heat most pleasantly.
