“Good location, disappointing staff”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

We stayed at Rugantino for 5 nights in May. The location was terrific - in Palermo, close to great shopping and dining and easy access to cabs for wherever we did not want to walk. The rooms themselves were fine as was the breakfast - certainly good enough for the low price. There was quite a bit of street noise, quite late into the night but Buenos Aires isn't known as a sleepy city so we did not mind so much.

However, the service at the B&B was definitely less than expected. At other B&Bs we have stayed at we are usually presented with a map and some idea of the area when we check in but there was no such "orientation" at Rugantino. There was an older, Spanish-speaking couple who may have been helpful but they spoke barely any English (and we speak very little Spanish.) It seemed there was only one staff member (perhaps the owner?) who spoke English, but he was only around some of the mornings and even then was not helpful when we asked him questions.

Though the price was right, the lack of care of the staff would steer me to neither stay at Rugantino again nor recommend it to others - especially those who are unfamiliar with Buenos Aires or do not speak much Spanish.

I read the reviews after our trip, then wondered, "Were we at the same B&B?" The professional photos seem to have been taken a long time ago. Our room was small and in need of a new coat of paint. The "distressed" furniture motif just seemed old. The patio furniture was mildewed and some was broken. The owner was very nice, but a bit distracted by other ventures (including turning the B&B into a music venue some nights). The wifi worked sporadically from our room for our iPad, though fine from the lobby. The metro is a long walk from the B&B. On the bright side, Palermo Hollywood isn't far away, and it's filled with great restaurants. An employee was very helpful with travel arrangements. And we did meet some nice people at breakfast one morning. If you are a backpacker, this B&B will seem palatial -- if you're beyond backpacking, you might be disappointed, too.

Room Tip: Ask for a big room (ours was small)

Once you step inside, this little place is quite different from how it appears on the outside. The room was clean and comfortable if perhaps a little minimalist. A nice rooftop deck and wifi.
Breakfast was good, and best of all, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

A close walk to many excellent restaurants and music venues. Not too far from the Subte (Metro) if heading to the city.

There really is a nightclub or party house next door. But it's not open every night. The dance music was very loud until 4 am and then the patrons talked very loudly on the street for another 30 minutes. Earplugs are not really the solution.

However, the overall experience was good. It's Palermo Soho, so enjoy it!

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the street.

My wife and I stayed here for 1 night, after booking our stay in advance. When we arrived, we found the couple who own the hotel to be very pleasant, friendly and welcoming despite the language barrier created by my failure to remember most of my HS Spanish. They were very happy to help us by calling a tour company for us in an attempt to get a last minute booking, and also helped us make an advanced booking for a very early taxi to the airport the next day. The service was excellent.

The room was large and comfortable, it faced the street, and felt like a typical older style BA hotel with large windows and large shutters covered with decorative bars, giving you the option to open/close either or both of the windows and shutters. The only drawback to the room was that the bathroom was a little old fashioned and could have used some updates, but it was still perfectly adequate. My favorite aspect of Rugantino had to be the beautiful interior courtyard through which all rooms are accessed via stairs and tiled, ivy covered terraces. There is a beautiful ivy-accented rooftop terrace area with views of the neighborhood and some of the BA skyline. I took several pictures of the classic old fashioned style of the courtyard and terraces. I found the value to be excellent and would not hesitate to stay at Rugantino again.

This is a lovely hotel with a courtyard and stairs leading up to very nice rooms. The owners are very friendly and helpful. It is well located, close to many restaurants, easy to walk to the metro up maybe 7 blocks. The breakfasts were excellent and plentiful. A woman there will cook eggs to order.

Service and quality were excellent. Employees and owners were really helpfull and kind. They helped us out with everything we wanted to know about the city and our further journey in Argentina and Uruguay. We can definetely recommend this hotel for a city trip stay in Buenos Aires.

From the moment we arrived, we had a fantastic experience at the Rugantino Hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms quaint and well appointed. And the location was quite good-near many of the things my friends and I desired to do. I would definitely return should my travels find me lucky enough to be in Buenos Aires again.
