“Culture & Tradition..... and a GREAT Location !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2011

This was my first trip to Argentina, and I am always interested in the traditions and cultural history of any country I visit. This hotel was a great place to start my trip...... nice !! It is only a few steps from the Obelisk, and Plazo de Mayo Square. The hotel did show some signs of wear, but it was very comfortable and staff members were friendly and helpful. The front desk did speak English, and provided a map and some ideas of places to visit. I stayed here four nights. My room was on one of the upper floors, and there was no noise problem. I slept very well. There are about 150 rooms, so if they are not booked solid don't hesitate to ask to see another room if you don't like yours. I ate at the breakfast buffet one morning, and it was fine. I prefer to eat at local restaurants when I travel, and there were many to choose from nearby. I used the spa once... very nice. If you are going to stare at the walls looking for a piece of loose wallpaper.... DO NOT stay here. If you appreciate culture, history, and comfortable surroundings...... this is the hotel for you.

This place is a little worn around the edges, but it is clean and in a great central location. It is easy to access sites and restaurants in Buenos Aires from El Castelar either by walking, taking the subte (subway), or a bus. In fact there is subway stop a few steps from the front door.
The front desk staff at this hotel is bilingual in English and Spanish. They were immensely helpful to us when we were trying to find out if our flight was cancelled due to volcanic ash. They stayed on the phone and website until we found out, which took a while since everyone else in Buenos Aires was trying to find out the same information at the same time.
We were on one of the top floors and noise was not an issue for us. We used our air conditioner, which was way quieter than any hotel air conditioner I have used in a U.S. hotel.
The breakfast had a big selection so everyone can find something they like. The coffee is SUPER strong.
If you will be out and about all day and need somewhere clean and convenient to stay, I recommend this place.

Room Tip: Higher floors are further away from the street noise.

If you want a hotel with dingy rooms, peeling wallpaper, and the worst acoustics ever, this is the hotel for you. The hotel was not much better than youth hostels I used to stay in. People came in at all hours of the night drunk and loud. I had to be woken up at least 5-10 times every night.
The only good thing about the hotel is its location.

Buenos Aires is a fantastic and romantic city. We just loved it! There are great restaurants everywhere and food is really cheap and delicious. Prefer restaurants where argentinians go and hotels in the center of town, cause you can take a cab at very cheap prices (just have to check at the back of the driver's seat whether they have a kind of "cab's license" and pay attention when they give the change cause fake money is very common).
Castelar hotel is very well located and right across the street there's a fantastic seafood restaurant where they serve "paella" at about U$30.
We only had problems at Castelar Hotel cause they gave us a room on the second floor, which was really dark (we could only see internal walls of the hotel from the room window) and in the early morning it was just too noisy. We complained to the hotel staff several times but they've insisted they had no other rooms available. Only on the last day of our trip they gave us a room on the seventh floor where we could sleep nicely.
Otherwise, breakfast was terrific! Try the "media lunas" with "dulce de leche"!

I got a room hotel for very cheap on the booking.com website (if I recall correctly, I paid $350 for a double for 5 nights). I would have never gone to a such a cheap hotel, but the standard prices were much higher ($150/night) and the hotel is a 4 star with spa services, so I just thought I was lucky. The hotel is ok, kind of old style but I was told that's typical in Buenos Aires. But but but.. we had bedbugs in our bed!! It was definitely awful. We complained, and they were acting as if it was not such a big deal...In the end we got to move to a different room, but could not sleep being afraid we had those bugs going all over us. Disgusting!

This hotel was a disaster! the room was disgusting, old, and very very small. The hotel has 80 years old, not difficult to notice it. We had a very small window in the room but very hight so no view, and the window was close to the kitchen of the hotel , so impossible to open the window. The air conditioning was so dirty so we preferred not used it. The staff was rude, and useless . We didn t take the breakfast (which was included) because we wanted to leave this nightmare asap! The price (80$) is very expensive for this hotel. Next time we will choose a B&B. We don t recommend this hotel, it was definitively the worst in our life!

I stayed there a week ago with my husband, and the hotel is great, the bathroom kind of small, but I guess you get what you pay, or what you were to pay, we reserved the room using easy click travel, at the beginning we received the in process confirmation and 2 days after the confirm mail where it said our card was charged and everything was OK, and when got to the hotel, after checking in and going out for a walk, we were told that the agency canceled the reservation because the credit card didn't go trough and that we had to pay them, of course with was a lot more than we expected to pay with the NOT easy click travel, I don´t know if it is an arrangement between hotel and agency, but I think it was not a good thing to do to their guests, even a friend from Buenos Aires called a few hours before to make sure everything was fine, and they did not tell him anything, they showed us an email they got from the operation agent that got a day before!!! so they knew it already by the time we got there, at the end they made us a "discount" and we decided to say there. If it weren't because of that I would highly recommended, because the place is nice, breakfast really good, nice staff, and great location, so if you there, just make sure everything is fine!
