Castelar Hotel & Spa
Ranked #192 of 442 Hotels in Buenos Aires

In it's time this must have been a very grand hotel, as evidenced by some of the original fixtures and fittings that can still be found there; sadly that time was nearly 100 years ago, and the whole place is now very faded and tired.
The rooms are adequate , the wi-fi works in the lobby, and the location is good for the historic/government area and Puerto Madero- though personally I found this like Canary Wharf without the olde worlde charm - but the Subte A line which has a station right outside the hotel is currently closed for improvement.
The breakfast is fairly poor: the coffee is weak, the fruit mainly tinned and the bread/pastries stale. That said there are worse places to stay I'm sure and has a very good wine shp next door. It is now though a rather faded 3* rather than the grander establishment the names and shots online might suggest.

Nice hotel, with old, but lovely interior in colonial style. Very good breakfast buffet. We liked the central location at Avenida de Mayo, just a few steps from Avenida d. 9. julio. Very helpfull staff at the front desk.

Room Tip: Recommend to get a room, facing the avenue, with a good sigth. We stayed at 10th floor, which was wi...

The building is beautiful and in a great part of town. That being said, the rooms are in desperate need of renovation. There is a general grimy feeling throughout the building. Although we were put in a "nonsmoking" room our room smelled horrible and there were ash trays in the hall of our nonsmoking floor.

Stayed here on a half-board package for 5 nights in December 2011. Very old historic hotel, with a beautiful facade and classic lobby. The room was clean, but basic and in need of renovation. The entrance was separated from the bedroom by a door and contained a small refrigerator/mini-bar and a large armoir for clothes storage. The television and air conditioning worked well during a very warm spell in Buenos Aires. The bathroom was small, with a shower/bath combination and a bidet. The staff was not overly friendly, but did manage to meet all of my requests. Unfortunately, I did not have time to use the spa area. The breakfasts were simple with breads, cheese, coffee and fruit and were completely adequate. The dinner included in the half-board offered about 2-3 choices each evening (grilled chicken, beef, etc.). The service was nice, but the food was very average. Overall, a clean, comfortable place with a good location close to the avenida 9 de julio, but area looked like it could get a little dicey in the evening. The hotel bills itself as a 4-star, but I would give it a low 3 star at best due to serious need of renovations and updating and quality of food in the restaurant.

I went to Buenos Aires to spend four days. The Hotel was very nice and so was the continental breakfast. There is a restaurant/bar inside the hotel which is very convenient since downtown is not such a safe area to walk at night. The room was small, but very clean and tidy. The staff is very polite.

Spanish poet Federico García Lorca stayed here in 1933 and his room has been recently revamped. The hotel is old, but nice and well located at Avenida de Mayo and impressive Avenida 9 de Julio, at the very center of Buenos Aires. Services are fair enough but beware of online reservations that do not include taxes. Also, if you have an early flight to catch, you will not find sympathy with hotel staff. The night before I requested a fruit or bun since I would be leaving before breakfast hours (breakfast which I had already paid), but no one at the restaurant would help.

Spent a night in this Hotel, would not recommend it. We booked an apartement for 4 adults, carpet was old and dirty and the walls would have needed some fresh paint. The bathroom smelled funny and the 2nd room looked worst than the first one.I guess for the price we paid for BA it was what you get but I would return here! Breakfast was good and employees helpfull.
