I've been to several horse and dog race tracks in the States and some have their charm and others are just pits.
The Hipodromo in Palermo is in a class by itself. It is huge, perfectly situated (flight noise not withstanding) and beautifully designed. It is also one of the cleanest tracks I've ever been to as well. It has a wonderful open feel to it and there is a big screen in the middle to watch the races.
The architecture is just stunning and it is located in a great spot in Palermo.
One problem with the track though, is that due to its huge, open space, it can be very difficult to watch a race from the ground level. You really don't see the horses until they're coming down the backstretch. It can even be tough to watch races from the right granstand. Unfortunately the two center grandstands are for owners, trainers and other members.
Still, it is definitely worth a visit!
