Back in BA is a great hostel! Located in the hip Palermo neighborhood, Back in BA offers a great place to lay your head while visitng Buenos Aires.
Accommodations. The two story hostel contains a mix of dorm rooms and private rooms for one, two, three, or four. Some of the rooms have their own private bathrooms. There are shared restrooms on both floors. The rooms are relatively basic, but the prices are great. There are two commons areas. One is a quiet courtyard on the main floor. The main commons area has a full kitchen for guests to use, a dining table, couch with TV, two public computers, and a bar. Guests will stay up until 2 or 3 am in the main common area most nights before heading out to the bars and clubs in Palermo. There is always a staff person behind the main desk-bar area. You can rent a towel from the hostel for a 10 peso fee that is reimbursed at the end of your stay.
Services. Breakfast is provided each morning. I had a roll with dulce de leche every morning and it was great! There are many supermarkets and kiosks in the area selling food, water, drinks, etc. I picked up some yogurt to supplement the simple breakfast. For the most part, the breakfast is good enough on its own. If you want to save a few bucks on your trip, cook dinner in the hostel a couple times.
Activities. The staff here offer some suggestions for activities during the day and evening. The social director, JJ, even organized a Halloween party in the hostel. The trips and activities are suggestions, not plans. If you talk to a staffer, they can help you plan and book your trips and events. Then again, talking to any of your fellow travelers is a good way to go.
Advice. There are other forums discussing the exchange rate situation here in Argentina. My advice is that you should change no more than $150 American dollars at the airport at the official rate and then talk to the other guests about getting a better rate here on the blue (or black, as some call it) market. Some of the more long term residents will know where to go. Speaking of money, pay for a whole week in pesos up front. After you find a favorable exchange rate, pay for a week in advance and you can get a free night. Even at the American rate, Back in BA is a good deal. At the blue market exchange rate, this hostel is very inexpensive. A great value!
