"El Galpón de Catalinas" is a unique and memorable experience developed by a group of neighbours in the all-time "porteño" area of La Boca. I strongly recommend both for locals and foreigners as a pintoresque, yet fresh and autenthic, way to embrace Argentinian history and culture, from a very entertaining point of view. The best "play" they perform is, undoubtedly, "El Fulgor Argentino": an overview of the last hundred years of the key Argentinian events, centered in the evolution of the social club that bears the same name as the play. The focus is always on the comedy side, but not in a silly style (as one may find in the venues on Corrientes avenue), but in a deeper one -very valuable to the "murga" tradition- which encompasses social criticism and original music as well. The work of amateur actors does nothing but enhance the warm feeling that you get from watching the play. Surfing the theatre's website, I realized that El Fulgor Argentno conforms a trilogy, along with "Venimos de Muy Lejos" (this one centered in the massive inmigration of the 20th century) and the recently added "Carpa Quemada". Though I can only account for EFA and VML -which are intermittenly on and off-, I'm sure their latest addition is great as well!
A visit to this place will prove a lot more significant and memorable than most of the nicely wrapped -but quite spiritless- options meant for tourists...

Indie theater, the plays are written and performed by neighbours in La Boca. The plays are usually musicals, language is not an issue. After the militar regime the neighbours began performing in a park, then collectively bought the old barn. Other neighbours grill "choripanes", The firefighters of La Boca are always there as guardians

While in Buenos Aires a local artist friend insisted that I had to see the current show at the Grupo de Teatro Catalinas Sur. What followed was one of the most memorable nights I have had in ages.

This theater bills itself as neighborhood theater, but the quality of the show I saw was well beyond my expectations. The intimate atmosphere of the theater and the feeling of community (They were selling baked goods in the lobby to help raise money for the theater.) added to the sense that this theater shows the real bohemian spirit of La Boca.

Milagro (Miracle) was the current production (July 2007). It is a show that uses circus arts to convey a feeling of the miracle of life. The set and costumes were minimal, but the live music and the talent of the performers was top notch. This show was at times funny, at times touching.. and more than worth the ticket price of 15 pesos (about $5 US).

Just down the street at the corner of Admiral Brown there is a nice neighborhood restaurant/pub where the locals gather to watch football games and socialize. The proprieter is a character with a sense of humor... and it's a great place to stop before or after the theater.
