Reviewed 13 January 2014

Rooney's hotel was the first stop on our 3 week honeymoon to Argentina and Uruguay and we couldn't have asked for a better introduction to this vast, beautiful and busy city. We stayed for 4 nights over Christmas (availing of an offer and paying only for 3 nights). We were so impressed with the hotel that we also stayed another night while transiting through Buenos Aires on 1 January. On both occasions we were really impressed with the hotel. The owners have gone to huge efforts to maintain the atmosphere and detail of a bygone era. The rooms are all individually decorated with unique furnishings, beds, wardrobes, bedside table etc. The bathrooms are beautifully tiled and fitted. The hotel has huge character and for us offered so much more than staying at a generic, international chain. We stayed in room 13 at the back for our 4 nights stay and it was very peaceful and quiet. For our single night stay we stayed in room 4 which was home to a famous former resident and Argentine writer. This room was absolutely stunning (a chandelier in the bathroom!) and apparently very popular for visitors. It is at the front of the house so potentially noisier (although we are heavy sleepers so were not disturbed at all). All members of staff are hugely helpful, particularly the owner Kieran who arranged a night out for us on Christmas eve to a tango show which was a highlight for us, as well as providing information on where to exchange money, places to visit, transport, ferries to Uruguay etc. The hotel is in a fantastic location in Congreso. It is very centrally located and so not too far from any of the main neighbourhoods such as Palermo, San Telmo etc. It is within walking distance or a short taxi ride to many attractions. It is on a quiet side street of two busy thoroughfares (av. Corrientes and Av. Callao) which have a huge array of local cafes and restaurants which were also open throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays which was great for us. We also spent two nights in Palermo which we liked as well, though it is much further from the centre and other parts of BA. The breakfast at Rooney's was good with fresh fruit, cereal, toast and delicious Argentina sweets and pastries. Unfortunately we didn't take part in the free tango lesson, but hope to if we visit again! All in all, a fantastic stay here which we would highly recommend and wish to thank all of the staff again for their hospitality.

No entrance sign and our taxi driver got lost. Eventually we find it on a 3rd floor residential complex.

The condition of the rooms and plumbing were poor to very bad. The photos on their website are deceiving. We got such a shock, we immediately went back online and checked into the Hyatt in Recoletta. We walked straight out and lost our our entire stay of money through hotels.com. We have emailed them, but to date there is no advice that a cancelation fee will be charged only.

Lesson learnt - try pay a % of a booking before you arrive at foreign destinations. One never really knows what to expect.

Dear Mr. Schmidhauser,
It sounds like you should have booked the Hyatt in the first place. We are a small Independent hotel in the centre of Buenos Aires that has been in operation for 6 years. No disrespect to Hyatt customers, we have never tried to protray Rooney's to be like the chain of "Hyatt" hotels.
Given that you supposedly walked in and walked out, I am surprised you had the opportunity to prove the plumbing (which operates perfectly fine). Also, there are 2 large signs at the entrance, maybe your taxi driver took you on a 'mystery tour' to get an increased fare. Guests can book transfers directly with us at a reasonable fixed price to avoid this type of scenario.
Regarding payment, given you booked with the agency Hotels.com, you will have to take the issue up with them to ascertain their cancellation policy.
Yours sincerely

Kieran Rooney

The room was clean with beautiful colonial details and the staff was very helpful and friendly. ( Especially a french girl that I don't remember the name of)

Breakfast was good and the living room was a nice place to chat with other guests.

The hotel is situated in the centre and can be noisy, but the overall impression was very good.

The neighborhood felt safe.

Room Tip: Take the tango class included in the price. Maria, the teacher was lovely and will teach you the bas...

Location was perfect for our visit with many attractions within walking distance, the subte just steps away, and a bus stop in front of the hotel's entrance. We stayed in room 14 and found it to be cozy and inviting. There is a small balcony overlooking the street so expect noise (BA is a busy city). We enjoyed listening to the sounds of BA. The hotel is found on the third floor of an older building and you have to be buzzed in. We can't say enough about the staff. every single staff member was courteous and always available and willing to help. If they don't have the answer to your question rest assured they will work on it until they find the information you need. They will make arrangements for shows, tours, car service, etc. In a rush to meet with my cousin for lunch they even called her for me to let her know I was on my way.
There is no hotel feel here if that is what you are looking for. We felt like we were guests in someone's home with the most hospitable hosts you could ask for. Can't really say enough about how great the staff and owner are, we truly felt at home here. We were made to feel more like friends than customers which was an added bonus to our experience. I would stay at Rooney's again without hesitation.
The only thing we didn't care for was the coffee (very similar to coffee found in diners here in the US). But not really much of problem in Buenos Aires as coffee is available on almost every corner.
We had a long exhausting trip to get there and were allowed to check in early so we could sleep and they held our luggage for us after check out as our departing flight was scheduled long after check out time. Ask Mr Rooney for travel suggestions and times. He was spot on with his advice on our departure.

Room Tip: Inside rooms will have less noise, balcony rooms will be noisy (BA is a big, bustling city that can...

Found Rooney's on Tripadvisor and glad we did..Everything fell into place from the car
we had reserved to pick us up (and for the first time in B.A. believe me you don't want
to drive) to the confirmed reservation at the hotel. The 3 for 2 night stay a real bargain.
The hotel was great..loved the elevator (right out of the 20's). Nice room and very nice
assortment of breakfast items. All the hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Only a block
or so from the subway which is easy to ride and walking distance to Recoleta. Next trip
will be staying there for sure...

Room Tip: Good deals if you pay for items or services in Buenos Aires in USD....

Rooneys is well located in the heart of Buenos Aires, one block from the subway, with several good restaurants nearby. (We ate at Chiquilin 3 times). It's a very small hotel with only 14 rooms, and if you blink you'll miss the entrance walking by on the street. It's much more personable than staying at a typical western style chain like the Sheraton. Owner Rooney and his reception staff all speak english very well, which is sometimes hard to find in Buenos Aires. Rooms are all unique, comfortable, clean and good value.

Room Tip: We stayed in writer and poet, Leopoldo Lugones' room (#4) right across from reception desk. It...

We stayed in Rooney's two years ago and when the opportunity came to go back to BA, we decided to stay again. The 3 for 2 room deal is very good and we were not disappointed. Service was great, helpful advice from the owner helps a lot. Having a Subway station 1 block away makes the city very easy to navigate. Small things matter also. We arrived on a morning flight, but still got the room before lunch time. When leaving we had a evening flight and the owner arranged the use of a room to keep the luggage in and have a shower before going to the airport.

Room Tip: For a view but a bit louder take a room with a street view. For less of a view but quieter take a in...
