“Estancia Santa Cecilia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2011

Estancia Santa Cecilia was our home away from home for 5 days in September and I've never before so thoroughly enjoyed a vacation spot. Silvia is a lovely, intelligent and intuitive hostess, providing food and drink aplenty (I ate way more than I should have!) and making sure we had our plans for the day arranged.

The riding was spectacular and Jose spent time with us every day - taking us out on horseback to watch the gauchos at work, down to the river's edge and over to the other side of the ranch. I truly hated to see our time at the estancia come to an end.

This property comes with my highest recommendation.

Fantastic place. Beautiful old building in a beautiful garden, with antique furniture but very comfortable and homely. Excellent family meals, plenty of beer or wine and tea! It was chilly when we were there (even a frost one morning) but log fires were burning all the time and extra heaters & cosy quilts were provided.
The horse-riding was really special - we had quite mixed abilities but we were soon all cantering happily across the pampas, and the horses are so agile and responsive they were a pleasure to ride. One day we rode to the far side of the estate and had asado for lunch, it was amazing.
Being a Sunday & bank holiday when we were there, there was no cattle work going on, but Silvia had provided a guide for us who was full of local knowledge.
The ranch is just off the main Posadas to Iguazu road with very frequent buses, so very easy to get to (though Silvia very kindly helped us out with our bags). Don't miss San Ignacio and the English guide - so interesting, one of the best "sights" on our trip.

Room Tip: All fantastic

This was truly a memorable stop over on our holiday. Silvia was a warm and gracious host and made us feel part of the family. Tecko was on hand to help us with the riding and was very understanding given our riding experience ranged from zero to advanced. The riding can be as long or short as you want but you are on a working ranch so you ride along with the gauchos. The food was excellent and the wine and beer was plentiful! Apart from the riding we also managed to squeeze in some golf (at Posados golf club) and some Dorado fishing so there is lots to do.

My partner and i stayed there from the 1st to the 4th Dec. We had an amazing time there. The service was great, the food was the best we had in Argentina and most of all the welcome and hospitality we received from Silvia made us feel like we were at home. There are lots of activities to choose from such as horse riding, watching the Gaucho's at work, sight seeing crocodiles or just lazing at the pool or in one of the hammocks on the veranda. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to experience life on a beautiful Argentinian ranch.

I spent 3 nights here on my way to the Iberia Marshlands. This is a lovely old Argentinian property. Arriving tired, a tray of English tea (with cold milk too!) and cake was kindly sent to my room by the owner Silvia Nosiglia de Navajas. I felt like a house guest; as I was on my own, Silvia even offered to eat dinner with me. When she heard I could ride two days riding with the Estancia's Gauchos was organised. These kind men looked after me well; and I felt part of the working range (cattle are raised for selling on) in a way that it is rare to feel part of things as a tourist. Little matches galloping across the land after the Gauchos listening to them calling the cows to round up. It was truly a wonderful experience. Don't think you have to ride to come here; there is plenty to do if you dont ride and there is a lovely swimming pool, loads of birdlife and the food is good too. Although I went on to a ritzy "ecological" estabishment in the Iberia Marshlands, the truth is that I left my heart here!

The Estancia is conveniently located near the Missiones in Argentina. The house is beatiful, the food excelent and the owner very warm in receiving the guests. It was a great surprise!

We spent a very enjoyable 4 days at Santa Cecilia.

We got the bus there from BA (and later found out that we probably could have been dropped off right at the bottom of the estancia's drive.) The house (built in 1908) is handsome in lovely grounds and our room was comfortable and characterful with shuttered windows , a brass bed frame and antique furniture. The adjoining bathroom was a delight with gilt mirrors, tiled floor and chez long. The whole house smells deliciously of spicy wood and home baking.

We left several pounds heavier after being treated to 3 large meals a day (all produce from the estate), plus meriendas and iced tea that magically appeared throughout the day. We ate with other guests in the main hall at a large table, or, when we were the only guests left, on the candelit verandah which was very romantic.

We took several horse rides (no experience necessary - very gentle quiet horses) with one or more of the gauchos including an afternoon with the gauchos as they did real work, herding cattle for a weigh-in. This was a great way to see the beautiful estate.

We saw many birds of prey, owls, bats and a large cayman in the 'pond'. There are also several well cared for cute dogs who kept us company too.

There was nothing so nice as lounging on the verandah's hammock or rocking chair, or by one of the permanent fires indoors. Sylvia (the owner) was a warm but discreet hostess who gave us plenty of space but also made sure we were entertained. She had great ideas for riding routes and I'm sure she arranged specially for her son Diego, the estanica's business manager, to be present at one point to explain some of the running of the ranch in his excellent English.

Whilst there we also visited the nearby (30km or so) Jesuit ruins at San Ignacio where we had an excellent English speaking tour almost at closing time and then went back in for the new son et lumiere show which started on 1 August and if it is still on - go! It was quite magical.

We look back fondly on Santa Cecilia - Sylvia and her neice Marienna (visiting and helping out with the great food) made us very welcome indeed and were interesting company. As we had booked in advance and all meals and rides etc were included, no money changed hands whilst we were there, which added to the feeling of being a true 'guest'. We loved it.
