“Hidden gem in the jungle”
Reviewed 27 January 2011

We were undecided for a long time on whether to make the tremendous journey from Mendoza to Iguazu during our short trip to Argentina - but are SO GLAD WE DID. If anyone reading this is in any doubt as to how exciting seeing waterfalls can be, rest assured - they are phenomenal and will take your breath away.

We booked Hotel de La Fonte a couple of days before via email and from the first exchange Simona was extremely friendly and helpful.
We arrived at the hotel after a day and a night on the bus and Simona greeted us at the gate - she is extremely warm and friendly, the perfect hostess. She let us check in to our room early and delivered coffee to perk us up before the first of our day's sightseeing. We were on a fairly moderate budget during our trip and so opted for the least expensive room. It was still very impressive, decent size, comfortable bed, nice artwork on the walls and a good sized bathroom with electric shower and plenty of hot water (bedding and towels absolutely fine - no complaints at all!). The room was immaculately clean (and bug free) and there was a mosquito plug-in for the night on our bedside table.
The grounds of La Fonte are beautifully landscaped and there always seems to be someone sweeping leaves off a pathway to ensure the hotel is tip top. The pool is great too and there are sun loungers and towels out for guests to use and a poolside bar.

Simona was very helpful with planning our visits to both sides of the falls and arranged taxis for us - the first day to take us to the Brazilian side of the falls ($200 ARG for a delightful driver to collect us from the hotel, take us, wait for 3- hours and then bring us back - totally worth it,). We took a taxi to the Argentinian side the next day but to be honest it's just as easy to take a cab up the road to the bus station and then get on the bus to the falls which is really cheap. We did this on the way back.

As well as being an extremely comfortable hotel with wonderful and friendly hosts, one of the best things about this place is the restaurant. SImona's husband Mateus is a top chef (Michelin starred in fact - although they are very modest about this and do not splash it all over their advertising). Mateus does all the cooking and the restaurant has a very simple menu (few starters, few pasta/steak/fish dishes and a few desserts) using fresh, local produce. Both my partner and I opted for the steak on our first night and it was absolutely incredible. By far up there with what you would expect in a top London restaurant. The banana flambe with ice cream was also divine (not that we needed a dessert!). The next night we just could not go anywhere else but chose slightly cheaper menu options - me, the vegetarian pasta and my partner the fish. Again, both of our meals were delicious. How can vegetable pasta be made to taste so phenomenal! The tables are all set outside under a canopy next to the pool within the jungle garden and to sit eating such amazing food, drinking a good bottle of red under the warm night sky was a real highlight of our trip - and topped off our day's at the falls extremely nicely. Staying at La Font really made our time in Iguazu extra special and we would highly recommend it to anyone.

This was a real find. Simona and Mateus were excellent and the Hotel is soooo relaxing after a hard day at the falls. Our only complaint was the standard of the bedding and the towels but this is nit picking. We would definitely stay here again.

A fluke brought us to this hotel and it proved to be a winner. Simona was extremely helpful and helped us with all our bookings in the area. Dinner was delicious! A very enjoyable stay.

After reading the different reviews for hotels in town, I got the feeling we were faced with paying a huge pile of money to stay at an all inclusive resort or getting what we paid for at a hostel/backpackers. This hotel ended up being a nice fit between the 2. Simone the owner is very pleasant and nice to deal with, and made many long distance calls on her dime to arrange tours, inquire about bus and airline ticket prices to Sao Paulo, and generally was available at all times to answer questions and make our stay very enjoyable. The property is about a 15 minute walk from the center of town, which we enjoyed, and was two blocks from the bus to both town and the falls. The rooms are more like little cottages clustered around a big courtyard - it feels like you are staying at a small resort. The pool is a bit small, and there is a spa that wasn't too warm, but it worked fine for us. Breakfast was included every morning and was very nicely presented. We stayed in the least expensive room, and found it to be spacious with cable tv, a double bed, a loveseat, and mini bar. Stay here if you like to have personal service direct from the owner and her family as in a bed and breakfast, if you prefer to be an annonymous guest, then this might not fit the bill.

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. Walking through the rural town, we were a little worried about what the hotel would be like. You can't see it from the road but as soon as we opened the gate, we were very happy with our decision. The landscaping and resort decorations are beautiful. Simona is extremely friendly and very helpful with any planning you need. The rooms are great and very original. As other posters have noted, there is a barking dog issue at night but that is beyond the hotel's control since the dogs are in the residences near the hotel. We would have liked it if the electric shower was hotter, but that was only because the temperature was cold. The rooms can start to smell like mildew/mold but, hey, it is a rain forest!

Mosquitoes are plentiful but the staff does well to help you avoid bites.

The breakfast is absolutely amazing was unique each morning. We ate dinner there both nights. Relative to surrounding restaurants, the price was expensive but so was the quality of food and service. We were extremely pleased with our meals both nights and do not regret staying at the hotel to eat after a long day of trekking through the park.

The cats Sylvester and Marley are also extremely friendly and adorable.

We would definitely stay here again.

First of all - the hosts were perfectly friendly and helpful, the garden and general setting is pretty, and I'm sure the pool is very welcome when it is hot.

However, this place describes and prices itself as a boutique hotel. The rooms themselves are let down by their decoration, cleanliness, and standard of bedding. At a place of this price I would expect to have good quality bed, linen and towels and for them to all smell fresh. When we stayed it was cold which is normal at that time of the year. The room was freezing and smelt damp when we arrived, (and we had booked in advance), and the beds only had a sheet and one thin, cheap blanket on them. The blankets smelt musty. The shower reached slightly tepid for a couple of minutes and then reverted to cold. Fine when it is at 30C outside but not when it is 5C. The bath mat was old and worn.

In the rooms there was no information on the local area or prices for the mini bar. There was also no tea or coffee or free drinking water in the rooms and none offered to us when we arrived. Oh and no glasses for the mini bar drinks.

It is possible to get food but this is limited to a dinner menu which is extremely overpriced. It was actually more expensive to eat here than at the Sheraton in the national park which is just crazy. As it is a bit too far to walk into town it would be a good idea to offer a fairly priced simple menu with some sandwiches or snacks on it.

It cost us a lot to stay here and basically we felt that it was more an experience to endure rather than an enjoyable place to stay. Perhaps in warmer weather some of the issues would be less starkly highlighted but to be honest I'd still feel ripped off.

Very nice place, but I feel that it was slightly overpriced for what it was. Simona was lovely and gave some fantastic advice on where to eat and what to do.
