“Don't go there!”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

we booked Superior room for $150, checked-in in the morning, drop our luggage and got to the waterfalls. At night we were surprised, that our room "is broken" and we can't stay there! Nobody sent an SMS or phone call or even e-mail! We got a surprise at 9pm when we were quite tired. They proposed us another hotel, but when we got there, it was fully booked. After we got a proposition to stay another worse place with the trippled price we got paid fo La Canterra... on our question: "who will pay extra $250 (!) difference?" reception manager put down her eyes and told "I can make a call to our owner".

Couple times I asked to host us - we were really tired and all we weanted to have was a bed and 8 hours to sleep. What can happen with the room to keep guests away? I suspect they just overbooked or soldout during weekends.

I have no more words about awful attitude of hotel owners to their guests. The only compensation we got for poisoned night was a free taxi back to Brazil. Avoid this place!

Unfortunately I didn;t read people comments before booking, I just took a look on a global rating score. Sincerely, I have no idea how they made it... Booking.com should throw away that place out from the list.

Room Tip: avoid this place!

We had 3 nights here during a visit to Igauzu Falls. The Lodge is in the rain forest about 15 minutes from Airport and Falls. Reception was average, poor English spoken by check in girl. The hotel has seen better days, rooms and surroundings were a little tardy. Spa on back deck was not operating and dirty. The food in restaurant was poor to average, BBQ meat was tough and almost inedible. Other meals were not much better. Management really needs to smarten this place up all round.

Not recommended.

We stayed at La Cantera for 3 nights in the Earth room (terra), overall it was an ok hotel. I think we would have enjoyed it more if we didn't have a toddler with us.
We arrived at the hotel at 8:45 pm and were told that the restaurant only took reservations. The snack bar closed at 9pm. The only reservation available for dinner was at 10:30pm. Not ideal for a toddler. So, my husband and I drink the mini bottle wine and eat the crackers for dinner.

Breakfast was nice. It had a nice variety and enjoyed it every morning.
We didn't use any of hotel's optional transportation, etc. We rented a car- which is a must if you have small kids. The hotel is not close to the main road, so it was nice to have the availability to jump in the car and go when we needed.

Pros: The hotel had the best crib for our toddler waiting in the room when we arrived. Major points for that! It was clean and freshly made. I wanted to climb into it! My daughter had no problems sleeping in the room. It was big room and great for all the stuff a family carries around. The porch is nice, but we didn't use it. This is a great time to visit Argentina. The exchange rate is great for the US dollar (8 to 1).

Cons: Couple of things went wrong during our stay: bathtub handle broken. Normally, I wouldn't care. But, when my daughter wakes up in the middle of the night sick and we need hot water, it's not o.k. to have a broken faucet. Worse, they knew it was broken when I reported it the next morning. Restaurant hours: 7-11 pm with reservations only. It wasn't convenient for us, thankfully, we had a car to make other meal arrangements. Mildew: they've got a problem. The room felt wet all the time. All our clothes smell like mildew upon return. Again, not a big deal. I get the whole "wilderness" theme, but it loses it's charm when your clothes are wet and smelly. Wifi: didn't work in our room. We had to hold up our phones/computers above our heads to get online. This put a real cramp in our trip planning- as everything was online! One last thing: the list of "Can't Do" was kinda extensive. They were so proud of it, it was in a bound book in Spanish and English.

Even after the cons- I'd stay there again- but, it would be a romantic holiday for 2!

We stayed two nights in a normal room (upstairs) which was nice. We told the reception on day of arrival that the bathroom window didn't close, so insects could come in, but this was not attended two within the two days. Although, in fairness, I was surprised about the lack of insects inside the room. The bed was comfortable, the bath tub had jets and the balcony an insect net. Breakfast was better than elsewhere in Argentina.
Then we moved for one more night into the villa, which was disappointing. The jacuzzi was outside, so not an option as the sun set at 6pm. The balcony had no insect net. The jacuzzi was not made of plastic but tiles with many tiles missing showing the bare concrete. The shower inside was worn and flooded the bathroom.
When we brought this to the reception's attention we were told to write it into a complains book, but staff did not deal with this immediately.
On the other hand, while pool bar food is basic, the restaurant was a positive surprise after we had read some negative comments about it on here. The food was lovely and service very good.
Overall, the hotel knows people come and stay for the Iguazu falls and tourists will keep coming, whether the hotel is 'ok' or 'great'.

If you are going to Iquazu Falls, you have to stay at La Cantera. The experience is far superior to being in a standard hotel on the highway. It is set back in the jungle with a screened in porch and hammock off the bedroom, The staff is very friendly and helpful and there is a great pool area to relax in after your trip to the Falls.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second level facing the jungle are the best!

The location is amazing, in the jungle surrounded by amazing nature. The architecture and the calmness make the Cantera a perfect hotel to return to, after an exciting day at the waterfalls. Moreover, the staff is very kind and helpful, they took a lot of their time explaining us the activities available, organizing things for us, and even going through the available rooms at 23h00, in order for me to find one that would trigger my allergy less (it was all good, eventually).

However, if you are a light sleeper, ask for a room in the upper floor, because in the ground floor you can be easily woken up by steps above; the cleaning ladies start at 09h00 and if your neighbours went to bed at 01h00, well...

I hope they fixed the pool, as my partner cut his toe pretty deep on one of the stept. They said they'd close the pool for 10 days, but I didn't see any warning issued for the rest of the guests.

Surprisingly, the hotel's restaurant was horrible. Quite a shame, since it's so nice to not go out for dinner and instead relax in the hotel; I couldn't finish one of the dishes, something that has never ever happened to me before. Plus, the staff was not very professional... At least the bar offers amazing snacks, burgers and salads.

Room Tip: Take the top floors, if you don't want to be woken up by the slightest noise

Estimated guest, we are very grateful for your feedback. We are very pleased to read you enjoyed the sourronding nature, as the rooms and facilities as well. In concern with the pool, we already fix it, so you and your friend can come over again and enjoy it safetly.
Regarding to the food, we have now a larger menu with different options every night and a better service and quality.

Hoping to see you again,
My best regards,

The hotel was a good place to spend our time whilst in iguazu. The facilities were excellent and also the staff where super helpful in pointing out things we could do and also addressing any questions we had. The setting was also beautiful as well as it was set right there in the jungle and away from the hustle and bustle of the town. We were able to end most days relaxing and swimming in the pool.

In reading some of the reviews about the food, I was a bit worried but to be fair the breakfast were really good with lots of different options for us and the kids. However, the bar food was hit and miss and we just went to the restaurants in town for dinner which gave us more choice anyway.

Would recommend this for anybody travelling with kids because for the price and the general standard of accommodation and the setting you could not go far wrong. Whilst certain bits of the accommodation required fixing e.g. the walkways to the rooms, it did not detract from the experience we had
