“Excellent experience”
Reviewed 23 May 2013

We stayed at El Sol at the beginning of May and had an excellent experience. The staff is very welcoming, the rooms are small but very cosy (wood floor, white wall, nice artwork, bright) and clean. We had an excellent breakfast with fresh juice. It is an excellent option. It is a short walk from the terminal which allows you to have a very nice view from your room.
I definitely recommend this place (for family, couple or group of friends).

Room Tip: the ones on the first stage with an amazing view

Arrived after a lengthy border crossing with Bolivia and picked it out of a book. We were shocked at the Argentinian prices so took a double room with shared bathroom. The room was adequate, with a heater but had mosquito problems. My husband didn’t get bitten but my head and face were swollen the next day. The 2 shared showers were very basic, like the room and you had to light the gas boiler every time you wanted one. You also had to walk outside to the shower rooms which wasn’t great as it was raining both nights we were there. The breakfast is basic, only 2 small stale rolls each, coffee freshly squeezed orange juice. The staff were friendly and helpful and you could use the kitchen. It was a bit of a walk to the town but we didn’t mind.

This is an ok hostel in Humahuaca. We had a private room, with bathroom, and it was ok. Not much space for hanging clothes, and no lockers, but since it was only 3 of us and we had basically 2 bedrooms it was ok. We had a double bedroom and one with bunk beds, and the bathroom was right in the middle of the two, and the smaller room was a bit oppressive, since there was hardly any light in it. Breakfast is the usual continental breakfast you get all over Argentina, with a really poor quality coffee. I think it must have been nescafe - a real shame since coffee is overall rather good in Argentina. Guests can use the kitchen, but it is rather small. There is only one computer available, and there is a fee to use it. Beware if you book a shared room, as bathrooms are outside (you have to cross an internal garden to reach them) and it gets really cold at night. Another thing is that the hostel is a bit far from the centre of town, so you would have to have your own car or walk along a really dusty and muddy road.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a private bedroom, with bathroom, especially if you usually wake up in the middle...

The hostel is indead a bit out of town, at least 15min. walk. We took a taxi from the bus station, but on the way back we walked with our backpacks.
We had a lovely double room, nicely decorated and with a beautiful view on the mountains. There are only 2 bathrooms to share, and it can be chilly. Some of the blankets they provided were dirty. The breakfast was good, in the Argentinian style: some bread, a good coffee and mermelade and dulce de leche. The guys at the reception were ok, but not extra helpful. We better got information about walks in the tourist information at the centre. At the hostel they seem to want to sell only the over-priced tours. Our experience in Argentina all in all is that people try to get more money from you whenever they can (as in the review below) it is always good if you can speak Spanish, but they rip each other off anyway.
We also had 2 of the worst nights of sleep. Eventhough the hostel is further from the town, the noise seems to travel very good in the dessert, we could not sleep as it was Friday and there were lots of parties, plus the horrible dogs that would not stop barking.
A good think is that they have wifi, but only in the breakfast area.

We stayed here for a couple of nights. The hostel is the furthest of them all from the bus station over the river and then a (claimed) 500m walk uphill which felt a lot further especially with back packs. The hostel itself is ok with rooms being basic but clean however only one shared bathroom amongst quite a lot of dorms.
Our stay was spoilt as they overcharged us. Initially on our drinks bill where the guy incorrectly totaled it (in favor of the hostel!) and took two attempts before he accepted that it was wrong. Then we tried to get the discount as HI members. We had booked through hostelworld.com who take a 10% deposit in advance and you then pay the balance to the hostel on arrival. When we pointed out that we had been charged full rate the guy refused to accept this and claimed the 10% deposit to hostelworld.com did not go to the hostel and so we already had the discount! A combination of our limited Spanish and the need to catch our onward bus meant we were not able to resolve prior to leaving and hence we were left out of pocket.
Save yourself a long walk and the hassle and stay at one of the other numerous hostels closer to town.

Room Tip: Get a hostel closer to town!

This hostel was the best I stayed in in Argentina. The dorm rooms of about 6-8 were clean, well kept and lovely. The owners were great too, really helpful and friendly, they even helped us make a bbq on our last night! Fantastic hostel, small but sweet, would definatly recommend it!
