We found in Peuma Hue the confluence of beautiful scenery, excellent food and wonderful people, both staff and guests. Mountain trails that begin just off the property quickly take you to wonderful overlooks of the countryside. We galloped our horses along forest trails and rafted along rivers with exciting rapids and cool still pools. But it's the atmosphere of Peuma Hue itself that distinguishes it. It's not just that the staff is inviting and helpful, or that the food was a delight. Guests quickly become a part of a group of interesting people from all over the world. Even our ten year old son enjoyed Peuma Hue. It was hard to tell if he preferred Indio or Corazon, the two horses he rode, or whether Bobby or Ghandi were his favorite dogs. Genuine tears came to his eyes when we left. We've travelled widely, but few places have been so enjoyable that they made us want to return, especially when the world offers so many exciting new opportunities---Peuma Hue is the exception.

We had a wonderful stay at Peuma Hue, and I would enthusiastically recommend this property to anyone who wanted to experience a memorable vacation in an idyllic location. The setting can't be beat. The property is cradled between two mountain ranges on the shores of a pristine lake. Horses roam the lawn outside your windows and 5 friendly dogs are your guides when you hike the property. The food and wine was delicious. The hosts, Evelyn and Marcelo were wonderfully attentive, without being obtrusive. We were two families traveling together...4 adults with 5 children whose ages ranged from 4 to 18....so for a place to keep us all active and happy is a testimony to the hard work the staff puts into making everyone's visit a memorable experience.

I've read a couple of the other comments that mentioned the price of the stay. Yes...this is probably not the place for the college backpacker or the serious budget conscious traveler. I guess paradise does come at a price. But....from my perspective..I think it's important to consider the price vs. value equation. This is truly a beautiful and unique place. It's the kind of place where you can either be incredibly active throughout the day....or just decompress by walking the beach or reading by the fire....or a little of both. For what we did (horseback riding, white water rafting, hiking, great food...etc) the price was fair. I felt pampered, without being doted on. We all felt lucky to have found a place like Peuma Hue.

Where to begin?! We traveled as a family from NYC with our two children, ages 11 & 13. We trekked all over Argentina for almost three weeks and when we returned home, we longed for Peuma Hue! The pristine landscapes everywhere we looked appear exactly like a picture postcard. A multitude of activities including horseback riding where we cantered along the most gorgeous lake imaginable and up into the mountains indulging in incredibly gorgeous vistas, an exciting and challenging ropes course in the mountains with highly experienced and safety conscious guides, great rafting just a drive away -- there is so much to do! Truthfully though, I could have just sat and quietly basked the amazing landscapes all day long. The experience is only richer because of the most dedicated, warm and lovely Evelyn and Marcelo and their most gracious staff. Scrumptious food, endless wine and a divine and intimate setting ... we felt instantly like family. Peuma Hue is an exclusive adventure for adults and kids alike, it's a wonderful place to meet special people, to celebrate a special occasion--or to just relish life and beauty in general! You can rest and relax, or be as active as you wish - it's all your choice! Our 11-year old son asked Evelyn if he could return and work for her at Puema Hue for a year ... we've traveled extensively internationally as a family - he's never felt that way about any place! I may very well submit my resume too ... Puema Hue is a 'whole person' experience, one that changed us all. I had to fight the tears the day we had to leave ... we'll make the trip back, in a flash!!!

I've stayed there with my family earlier this year (Feb 2008). We all loved it. I know the region well and Peuma hue is located in one of the best spots in Patagonia. I've already recommended it to friends coming from California and they keep thanking me for the amazing experience they had. It's pefect for all ages and profiles! if you are the active/explorer type, you're in the right place, and if you just want to relax for a few days without moving much, it's the perfect setting for a few short walks, a book, a glass of wine and good food.

The property is located in a very secluded place, right next to Lago Gutierrez with a private beach. Still, is not far away from downtown bariloche and the other "must-see" places in the region. There are lots of trails nearby to explore by foot , horse or bike (if you're a biker, contact them before so they get good mt bikes from a shop downtown). The staff will give you all the tips about things to do.

There are several options of accommodations in several houses. If you travel with a large group and want full privacy to stay out late, talk loud, etc. the house up in the mountain is amazing. It is truly a magic place up there. There's a short walk (10min) to get there, but is totally worth it if you want to have the experience of living up in the mountain.

The property does not have the format of a hotel, it rather looks like a luxurious bed & breakfast. Do not expect to get there and find a small butique hotel. It is not that! If you're expecting sumptuous luxury, you'll be disappointed. Rather, the houses respect perfectly the atmosphere of the environment. you're truly in the middle of nature!

The staff is absolutely lovely. Marcelo (the Gral Manager), Evelyn (the owner) and the rest of the team will make whatever they need to make you feel comfortable.

Pricing: The place is certainly not cheap, and you pay for the exclusivity of being in peuma-hue, a unique place for the few that can afford it. However, it is not expensive if you choose the "all inclusive" rate, as you don't have to spend one extra dollar during our stay. The fridge and bar in the main house were open all day, so if you want to pick a beer or a sandwich after a hike, the staff will gladly do that. Having said that, my family knew the Bariloche region very well before, so we did not have to move from the location to visit other places. If it's your first stay in Bariloche, you definitely want to visit some of the many great places to see in the region, so you will need to rent a car or arrange for private transportation. I'm sure the staff will help you with that but i do not know the rates for those services.

hope this helps!

Peuma Hue is an estancia, owned by a wonderful woman, Evelyn Hoter, in Patagonia (about 45 minutes from Bariloche airport). Pume Hue, literally means "place of dreams," and it is truly magical. It is nestled within the Nahuel Huapi National Park, is situated on a gorgeous, pristine lake and has over 500 acres of wilderness on Gutierrez lake. They have kayaks, hiking, horseback riding, fly fishing and a great ropes course.

The accommodations are gorgeous. We stayed in the main house which four bedrooms, including an enormous master suite with breathtaking views of the lake. The food is fantastic. Everything is organic and the chefs make wonderful soups and really amazing desserts. Chris, the wrangler, takes you on daily horseback rides where you literally are alone on exquisite trails in the mountains or cantering on the shores of the lake. Chris is a horse whisperer and truly loves each horse as if they were her own children. She speaks to the horses through the ride and praises them as if they are people.

The staff is generous, gracious and so warm and loving. Evelyn could not have been more helpful accommodating us in any way possible. The property itself is exquisite, and the free-spirited and constant roaming of horses, cats, and dogs on the grounds makes the experience even more unique. Peuma Hue has its own carpentry shop (where Jakie has been a daily apprentice), and much of of the furniture is crafted on the premises. The kids have been in heaven! We cannot wait to return. Check it out at www.peuma-hue.com.

Yet again, TripAdvisor rules! All the superlatives which have been written about Peuma Hue are true. The location, the beautiful hotel, the wonderful service and the excellent food. We rode horses, use the sea kayaks on the lake, climbed and walked in the glorious forest and just relaxed. Nothing was too much trouble for Evelyn's devoted staff - my husband want ed to go climbing - out came the dinghy, a huge packed lunch and a 2 way radio and he was ferrried across the other side of the lake to the best place. One of my fondest memories is wandering about in the vegetable garden eating raspberries straight off the canes. We will always remember Peuma Hue and we considered it to be excellent value. Sally

We stayed 3 days/nights all inclusive at Peuma Hue in early Feb and overall had a decent time. First I would say it takes a while to GET the Peuma Hue, which i suppose in itself is a bit of a downer given its ticket price.

More on the negatives in a bit. First, the positives. 1. good food (contrary to another reviewer we enjoyed the organic food and found the service charming). 2. beautiful scenery (walks in the grounds eg up to the waterfall were a joy. 3. the horseriding - the horses and the horse whisperer were fabulous (i am a novice but was cantering/galloping with ease by my third ride). 4. Marcelo - we found him to be incredibly service-focused and he constantly sought us out to check our activity schedule. 5. the format is great (this is the bit about GETTING Peuma Hue) - you meet some really interesting guests as this sort of place only seems to appeal to (relatively rich) adventurous types.

Now the negatives. 1. And this is the big one... i COULDN'T SLEEP. this is a bird sanctuary and there are soooo many of them.... they sing ALL night and really go for it at sun rise.. which is v early in patagonia. also, the window on our superior room had a weird huge semi-circle of glass at the top that had no curtains...basically when the sun rises (v early) you are stuffed if you're a light sleeper like me. 2. this isn't really that remote. yes they have a lot of private trails but the lake frontage is next to a public beach so you don't get that totally isolated feeling. there are plenty places in patagonia for isolation and this isn't really one of them. 3. the price. £200 per night is no big deal in london but in bariloche region it is a small fortune ...you can stay in some wonderful places at under half the rate... check out Tunquelen for example. virtually nothing is included in the all-inclusive rate, apart from horse-riding (which is admittedly great). basically, at Peuma Hue you are paying for exclusivity (no more than 20 odd guests at any time) more than anything else.

Overall we recommend Peuma Hue to people who don't mind over-paying for personalised service and love horse-riding. But for me, i want to sleep well on hols and you don't get that here.
