We made our first trip to Mormon Lake Lodge on Mother’s Day weekend, and it is easily everyone’s new “favorite” family vacation spot in AZ.

Location: The grounds are beautiful, clean, and spacious. And we loved the old Western charm and décor. As for the “lake,” there was no water. But Lake Mary is right down the street if it is water you seek.

Kids: This lodge is designed for families, and easily receives an “A” rating from our crazy crew. The girls went fishing for the first time, and they each caught a trout at the children’s pond. Our little one is still talking about it. She literally has a perma-grin. They also spent a lot of time at the playground, and everyone enjoyed viewing the buffalo up close at the habitat. They are a must-see.

Cabin: Unlike other reviews I have read, our cabin was quite clean. Our cabin was toasty warm, had scalding hot water, and a beautiful front porch. This is not a resort, so plan accordingly because the kitchenette is, well, a kitchenette! It is small, but does the job sufficiently for a hearty egg, bacon, and toast breakfast. I would, however, recommend bringing paper plates, plastic utensils, and paper cups (why waste your time washing dishes when there are so many other things to do). I would also suggest bringing a sponge, spatula, and measuring cups. It was one-step above rustic, and we LOVED it!

Store: The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful at the country store. They assisted us with a fishing license, and even suggested an alternate route back to the Valley since we have a Jeep. It was really fun driving on the dirt road! Also, when you arrive at the lodge, visit the store so you can pick up your eggs, margarine, milk, bacon, and bread. They have a great selection of grocery items there.

Staff: The staff was incredible. We received 5-star treatment from the cowboys at the stables, the clerks at the country store, the servers at the restaurant, and the staff at the pizzeria.

Horseback Riding: I have been riding for many years, and I can honestly say this was the most beautiful experience I have ever had on horseback. The landscape was amazing and our guides were first-class. A+!

Trails: AWESOME! The Jeep is covered in dirt. Need I say more?

Restaurant: The restaurant, ah, yeah, how do I say this? We were not impressed. The Rib Eye steaks were thin, and one of them was overcooked. Our server was VERY sweet and immediately had the cook fire up another one. I have read reviews about the service being slow, and they are right. Both times we were at the restaurant, it was very slow, but we did not mind at all. It was leisurely, cozy, and provided us with an opportunity to chat. What is the rush? You are supposed to relax on vacation. Our issue was with the quality of the food, not the service we received.

In summary: We LOVED it and cannot wait to go back! It is a GREAT location for a family-friendly vacation. The End.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated cabin when booking your reservation.

I attended Overland Expo May 16-18. I camped, but did use the facilities for meals and shopping in the convenience store. The previous Overland Expos were all very large scale events with thousands of attendees. It's been in the same location for at least three years. It should be no surprise that there will be thousands of attendees for this event. The staff was all obviously brand new, and several told us so. The outlets had inadequate supplies of food and drink. The pizza ship ran out of sauce and cheese. The restaurant ran out of burgers, steak, vegetables, etc. The shop ran out of ice and water. The wait times at the restaurants were crazy long. Rather than offering a limited menu of "a slice & a coke", the pizza shop was selling only whole pies. That is both time consuming and inefficient. The restaurant was understaffed. 15 minutes wait to speak to a hostess. Two hours wait for a table. One hour to get food. Salads arrived after the main course, no bread offered, drinks not topped off, etc. Service was rough and servers and supervisors used the "It's my first day" excuse often and loudly. I would expect a destination like this to learn to plan ahead, train the staff, stock up on food and beverage as needed. Just a lack of planning on their part.

Room Tip: Camping was nice but showers are $2 so bring some quarters.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review of our property and we value your opinions. We are sorry to hear about such a disappointing experience during the Overland Expo. We do know that we are expecting thousands of guests and we do prepare for the amount of people that will be coming to Mormon Lake Lodge we even use two semi-trailer freezer trucks to store food for this event, however we cannot predict what everyone is going to order, with certain items being more popular than others it does occasionally happen that restaurants will run out of items. This year’s overland had over 1,000 more attendees than last years. Now with Overland Expo coming to Mormon Lake Lodge they do book all of our upstairs dining areas for their seminars, and our dining area becomes marginally smaller than normal. With people sitting down stairs and enjoying their dinners and offering them quality customer service we cannot force them to leave their tables. We have received numerous positive and supporting letters on this event as well as the location. We are sorry about your dining experience with Mormon Lake Lodge and have taken your advice about selling “a slice & a coke” and will be offering it next year for the Overland Expo. Mormon Lake Lodge is a seasonal resort and our season starts at the beginning of May and with Overland Expo being the first event of our season, a lot of our staff is fairly new when Overland Expo arrives, we have spoken with our staff about the way that they handle complaints and issues and we hope that when you come back for the Overland Expo you will give Mormon Lake Lodge Steakhouse another chance make your experience here more enjoyable.

Thank you again for your review,

My husband and I love bringing our family to Mormon Lake Lodge. The staff is very warm and welcoming and go out of their way to make the stay a pleasant one. We love that so many of the cabins have private porches and in room fireplaces. It is truly a home away from home. The service at the steakhouse and the new pizzeria restaurant is excellent as is the food. There are plenty of areas to have an outside fire pit to sit around at night as well. We have stayed at resorts in Scottsdale since we live in Phoenix for a weekend, but have found that the short drive to Mormon Lake is so worth it. Without a doubt, this place is better than any Scottsdale resort!

Our Boy Scout Troop has scheduled a winter outing to Mormon Lake for the past 5 years. They have equipment for rent (very affordable) to cross country ski, snowmobile and 4 wheel. We usually bring some snow shoes as well to hike out across the lake for lunch and some igloo building. The historic Lodge and other outbuildings are in great shape, the staff is very accommodating and helpful and our group consistently rates the trip their favorite every year. There's always plenty of snow, fresh air and stars galore . . . a great place to spend a few days with family and friends!

We stayed for two nights for a friends wedding. We'd been out last year to try and eat in the restaurant, but didn't get waited on. This time, we found the service in the restaurant a little better, and the food was actually pretty good. The room, however, really needed some work. We stayed in the motel units, perhaps the cabins are better. We had two rooms. One had heat, but both were dodgy and inconsistent. Just a bed, a nightstand, and that's it folks. Not even any hangers. The lino in the bathroom was curled up around the edges, the toilet didn't flush unless you got inside and fiddled with it. The hot water faucet in the shower was so hot to the touch, it actually burned. The folding shower "curtain" was full of mold in both rooms. Had to ask for more coffee for the second day, as there was no housekeeping provided. The most annoying thing (besides either being too hot, or too cold) was the lack of soundproofing between the rooms. Someone checked in next door (with two little kids) late at night - when they turned on the lights, you could see the light coming through the seams in the ceiling and walls. It sounded like they were in our room.

I don't mind rustic. I don't like dirty. I think Forever Resorts should inspect all the rooms on the property, and make a commitment to putting some money into it. It could easily be a very cool place. I get why some of the staff are sort of detached...they probably hear a lot of complaints. The girls at the desk seemed surprised about the mold in the showers, did not even apologize - just said they'd have housekeeping have a look.

Room Tip: Stay in Flagstaff, and day trip.

Mormon Lake Lodge is a hidden gem! I wasn't expecting much after reading all these reviews and was more than pleasantly surprised.

We stayed in cabin #11 the Loren Grey Cabin. We parked right across the street from the country store and our cabin was right up the steps. There is a huge porch in the front with nice seating.

You walk into a large living room with two huge pull out couches, a tv, a stereo/cd player, coat closet and electric fireplace. The tv has directv and a dvd player.

There is a full kitchen with four person dining table, full sized refrigerator, oven/stove, microwave and sink. Kitchen included just about everything you'd need to cook a full meal. Pots, pans, knives, can opener, silverware, cups, plates etc etc. If there is anything more you needed it could be requested from housekeeping. There was also a coffeemaker and coffee from Seattle's Best.

There is a full bath with tub/shower. The first bedroom had a queen sized bed, dressing table, nightstand and a big closet. The second bedroom had two bunk beds each with a larger full size mattress on bottom and twin mattresses on top. We had eight adults that each slept comfortably and could really have had two more people with no problems.

The cabin was clean and well kept so I'm really not sure why there were so many negative reviews. I did have a chance to look at one of their more "rustic" 100 year old (yes, 100 years old!) cabins. They definitely had an older cabin feel but still had a full kitchen, bathroom, and one or two bedrooms. Again these cabins are 100 years old. So they’re clean but go in remembering that they are older and won't have the same feel as some of the newer cabins,

We made use of the community barbeques and really enjoyed ourselves. The country store has the basics, but I would definitely bring your own meat to grill. The grills were not covered, but the picnic benches were under a gazebo.

The restaurant and saloon are a nice touch. We didn't really eat at the restaurant, but did have a nice time at the saloon. There was a band playing live music both nights we were there.

Behind the main building there was a playground and petting zoo for the kids. There is also a buffalo habitat and a stocked trout pond.

Mormon Lake Lodge is definitely a place we would like to go again. It’s a fun hangout for families or friends and a great way to get out of the heat.

Room Tip: Please ask for a newly remodeled room if you want a more modern "hotel" type of atmosphere...

Carpets were obviously filthy did not take my shoes (flip flops) off for the 2 days we stayed that also included the shower. The pots and pans that were stored under the kitchen sink were not wiped out sickening to even think of cooking in and no access to soap to wash them..I walked down to the office and they sent housekeeping who were extremely nice but were foreign exchange students and did not understand what I was saying. Then the urine left on the toilet from the last occupant I would so think twice about staying here a day trip we will do to access the horseback riding and crawdad fishing which were excellent..But really Mormon Lake you could do better!
