“A home away from home”
Reviewed 9 December 2011

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience. The hotel itself is relatively new and beautifully constructed and decorated with South American art. The staff at the front desk were above and beyond helpful, with the type of personal service you can only get at a boutique hotel. We were given a welcome drink once we arrived and the staff also helped us book all our excursions and made restaurant recommendations. The suites are incredibly spacious and comfortable with all the amenities you need. We were able to cook meals in the kitchen and borrowed bikes to get around town. Breakfast was delicious every day. And the environment and views couldn't be better. We would sit out on the front deck or inside our room when it was too cold, and just enjoy the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains. If you want a peaceful, relaxing time in El Calafate, this is the place to go.

After trekking W Trek in Chile, this lovely, small, and beautifully fitted out hotel was an absolute delight to stay a few nights.
It is very quiet, extremely comfortable bed and luxurious bed linen. Very warm with heated floors, good breakfast, and very helpful and friendly staff.
I did not want to leave! BTW you make up to beautiful views of Lago Argentina.

Pros:
1- Wonderful staff- very helpful and friendly
2- Great view across the lake (and great spot to watch the flamingoes!)
3- Well equipped kitchenette
4- Excellent level of cleanliness
5- Warm and attractive little two-storey apartment with a very comfortable bed and nice furnishings.
6- Parking right outside (free, on-street)
7- Good breakfast delivered to the door at a time that suits you.

Cons:
Well, there aren't any really.............. but, if I was pushed I guess I could say that it's a little bit of a walk from the centre of town. It's about a 30 minute walk into town along the main road (which is well-lit at night) and we did it every night of our 3 night stay there. If you go for a massive meal, and stuff yourself with great wine and a mixed grill, that walk home does seem a long one! However, there are taxis available 24 hours a day.

After 3 weeks of travelling in Argentina, we agreed that the Los Ponchos Apart Boutique was one of the best we stayed in...
The apartments are very spacious and beautifully designed... The bed in the top floor was excellent and the view would inspire the painter in all of us...
Our hosts were also very friendly and helpfull, serving us a private breakfast before we left for the glaciar...
The hotel is not located in the city centre but we found this to be an advantage as we value peace and quietness.
Besides, one of the best restaurants in town is also located just in front of the hotel... (see restaurants in tripadvisor)

My partner and I stayed here towards the end of a fantastic trip around Argentina, including staying in some of the nicest hotels. Los Ponchos is up there in our list of favourites, coming second only to Cavas Wine Lodge, where we got engaged. Having heard El Calafate was generally expensive and having spent much of our trip eating out, we decided to stay in self-catering accommodation so we would feel like we had our own space for a change. Los Ponchos offered us this, with a coach to kick back on, and a kitchen but with the added benefit of breakfast being brought to your door at a time of your request, even if up very early to go on an excursion. It offered us the option of staying in and cooking but with the comfort of being in a hotel and the cleaning service, which included doing our dishes! The absolute highlight of the hotel however is the view from the upstairs room. We spent a couple evenings quite happily sat by the window watching the sky over the lake. The staff were very helpful in helping us book onto excursions and made good recommendations, particularly when high winds meant our excursion to Estancia Christina was cancelled. The walk into town is an easy one and we took bikes on one occasion. Check the bike tyres for air before you take them out however! I'd recommend considering renting a car in El Calafate and driving yourself to some of the top sites, it will be much faster than sitting on a bus that picks up other tourists from 10+ hotels at 6.30am AND surprisingly cheaper. Driving is stress free in El Calafate (unlike the rest of argentina) as there are very few cars on the road. Driving to El Chalten, we passed only a handful of cars and it was a beautiful drive. Wish we had spent more time in the area with a car, particularly a few more days in El Chalten. Very comfortable bed but one night we had a very noisy family next to us with children running up the corridors - only downside is that the rooms are not very soundproof.

Pros:
The view is amazing
Service is impecable and timely (5 star service with out the 5 star price)
Value of the services and amenities is very well balanced
Clean rooms and well stocked bathrooms

Cons:
Apartments are not meant to be shared by more than 3 people (comfortably)
A little seperated from the town so walking is an option only on warmer days but taxi ride is only 5 minutes to town (~15 pesos)

Overall our experience has been positive and we would strongly recommend this hotel we are very pleased.

Los ponchos have a beautiful view of the Lago Argentino, the street is quiet and calm, the staff is very friendly and the rooms are fantastic. Great value. It's located a little bit far from downtown, but it's like less than 20 pesos (5 dollars) a taxi ride.
