Santa Monica Aparts
Location: Off main Av Liberatador towards eastern end
Hotel: 10 cabins, parking for a few cars
Room: Our cabin had a big living room, one room with double bed and one with 2 single beds
Positives: Well kept, fully equipped, serves breakfast in room
Negatives: creaking due to wooden floors, only 1 bathroom
Ranking at time of writing: Ranked #2 of 72 hotels in El Calafate
SMA are located just off the main avenue that runs through El Calafate and close to the offices of various adventure companies such as Hielos y Aventura and Solo Patagonia (which organizes glacier tours). There is a super-market just a block away as well and a petrol station right across the road. If you are driving there, do note that the road Freile is a no entry from Av Liberatador and hence one must turn right onto 15 de Febrero and come around.
The apartment complex is compact with 5 buildings with 2 units each. Our unit was closest to the main road, so we did have a bit of noise disturbance at night when they were practicing for the carnival. Our cabin was spacious with a sofa, dining table, stove, microwave oven et al. The bedroom was slightly small; the bed occupied most of the space, there was an open wardrobe and that’s about it. The 2nd bedroom looked more spacious because the 2 single beds gave more room to walk around. The bathroom was adequately big and they had provided toiletries. The only disconcerting thing about the apartment was the creaking noise created due to the nature of the wooden floors.
The staff – very polite and helpful, we liaised with Yenifer over emails before our arrival, she helped with all our queries and offered assistance for booking tours. During check-in we were assisted by Hugo, who too was very courteous and helpful with our queries. They served breakfast in our room as early as 6am – we didn’t have this service anywhere else in our 10 day, 4 city stay in Argentina. Full marks to them. Also, do note that they don’t exchange $s into pesos, so either bring your pesos or change at a casa de cambio along Av. Lib.
I would certainly stay at SMA again, strongly recommend for families and those who are driving down.
Also Argentina is quite unique when it comes to exchanging money; I have put our experiences into a page. Here it is: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g294266-i977-k7275476-Our_experience_at_converting_Dollars_to_Pesos_in_Argentina-Argentina.html
