The staff and service in this hotel are first rate. Very friendly and attentive staff, plus the drinks prepared in the lounge by Carolina are great. They help you on choosing what to do and see in the Glacier National Park and the other local attractions. If you don't want to walk the 5 blocks between the hotel and the main avenue of El Calafate, where the majority of the restaurants and stores are located, the hotel provides a free of charge taxi service.

...and if the rooms had been better soundproofed this would have been excellent. The staff were very good, providing advice on local restaurants for which there is a free shuttle service. We ate in on a couple of nights and enjoyed the good value and well presented food. Bedrooms were large with very good beds and well equipped bathrooms. Our only reservation is that we were irritated by TV noise from the next room and by the buzz of conversation through the walls.

This hotel is a short walk to town but far enough above it to be quiet and peaceful. The common areas are perfect for meeting fellow travelers or finding a private corner if you would rather. Breakfast was included and offered excellent selection. Our room was very nice with king bed and a view of the lake. Manuel at the front desk can do anything you need and always with a smile, a very kind and helpful young man. Celeste was able to arrange tours for us and answered our many questions with patience and alacrity. If you are in El Calafate stay here.

We stayed here on one end of a trip to El Chlaten. If we hadn't already booked a different hotel for the other end of the trip we definitely would have come back here. It is an easy walk to town. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the dinner was one of the best meals I had in South America and the breakfast was good too. The view from the main building at sunset was very nice. The room was showing a little wear, but was spacious, clean and comfortable enough. This hotel outshined the second hotel we stayed in on our way back through El Calafate by a wide margin. The walk into town was easy and they had a shuttle at night. I would definitely recommend this hotel. It was a great value too! (my only frustration was the spotty internet--didn't really work in our room at all)

Perched high on the hill this hotel is classy, spacious, very well appointed with extremely friendly staff. Superb lounge area and bar. This is the best hotel we have stayed in in Patagonia. Thoroughly recommend it.

The staff are fantastic. Dinners were great with quality of food and value. The main building oozes character. However, our room had long since seen the last flush of youth. Shower screens leaky and new building imposing in front of our lake view. The hotel is also up a hill accessible by a dirt track and can be quite dusty.

The best thing about la cantera is the amazing evening meals we have had. We stayed here either side of a trip to el chalten and had dinner here on our first night, the trout was amazing, and the we had the chocolate volcano for desert, I'm a desert fan and this may be the best desert I have ever had! The chef and bar woman and make it an excellent choice as they are both so friendly. Unfortunately they were closed the next night and we are in town (terrible meal) so we were more than happy to eat here again on our return from el chalten, again an excellent meal, very reasonably priced! Stay for the food alone!
Upside of this, yes the hotel is up a hill, but if you have any level of fitness it is no problem. The rooms are large and comfortable and the staff do everything they can to accommodate. They looked after our large luggage when we went off for 2 days trekking. You can also organise all tours etc from the hotel, and it seems like its good value.
