Having been in Ushuaia before, we couldn't make up our mind what we really wanted to do this time. The excursions off the ship, Celebrity Infinity, were very expensive, so we decided to see what was available once onshore. The booth for Navegando el fin del Mundo was the first one off the pier, so we made our inquiries. The price was fair, about $60 per person, and it would include Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, a must-see. After waiting 20 minutes or so, two small boats from this company picked up the people who had booked the trip.... 9 on our boat, Che Totin, and about the same number on the other, Che Tango.
The guide was fabulous, very knowledgeable and easily conversant in English, giving explanations in Spanish first for the Argentinian clients, and then in English for us and the Austrian family. I have forgotten the name of the guide and driver, but Max and Leo from the previous review looks correct. We were able to see the entrance to the Beagle Channel, all of Ushuaia from the water, great views of the mountains and close-up visits to the cormorants and sea lions on small off-shore rock islands. The boats docked off each other on a small island and we had a hike to the top, looking back to Ushuaia. Along the way, our guide gave us detailed information of the unique flora of Tierra del Fuego. As well, we drove out to the lighthouse where the captain provided us with a spectacular close circumnavigation of the island on which it sits.
We were able to sit at the rear of the boat, inside where it was sheltered, or up front on the bow. No matter where you sat, every view was up-front, and every explanation was detailed. The guide was passionate in his knowledge about the area.
The return trip had small snacks, tea and home-made beer. And music. The whole experience was personal and informative. It was definitely one of our favourite excursions on our trip to the region, and well worth the price.
