The second-worst hostal I have stayed at in Ecuador. They use the atrium style common area on the main floor to host mass every night (or at least all of the 2 nights we were there). The preacher yells and shouts, trying to get the crowd of Catholic followers in a fervor. My wife had an ear ache from river rafting that afternoon and the noise downstairs (picture a man screaming 'DIABLO!') just added insult to injury. When we were getting pitched the room we were told we can enjoy the nightly fire downstairs. I don't see how when the place is used for worship. The whole area is lit up with harsh lighting that reflects off the lime green walls and dust-laden 'antiques' everywhere to create a sickly, unwelcoming feeling.
Our room was small but the bed was clean, though the floor needed sweeping. It was hard to tell whether the black sink and toilet in the micro-sized bathroom were clean. The complimentary soaps they offered were only good for hand washing some clothes with. They tried charging us $5 for laundry (had the same stuff done elsewhere for $3) and it came back stinking like chemicals.
At $30/night the breakfast is included and they pride themselves on making yogurt in house. It's ok. I would have preferred to skip the breakfast and go to Art Cafe down the street instead. We found MUCH better accommodation at nearby Chimenea for less.
