“Not the best value”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2008

My girlfriend and I spent two nights here in April, we are both 25. Please see my review below

The Good: Awesome views, friendly staff, fun outdoor hot pools

The Bad: The value, the food

The Ok: The rooms, the spa
- Our 1 hour massages lasted 45 mins, and they coverered us in oil that took a day to get off.

- Room has some charm, but bed was small, no bathtub, no tv, (note - we dont care about the tub, tv etc ...but when the price is $200+ night and the place is run like a resort, the room should not be small and rustic. )

Bottom Line: Luna RunTun is nice, but it is run like a massive hotel even though there were 6 people staying there. The food was the worst we had in Ecuador. My girlfriend salad was unedible. Although the service is good, we stayed at other places in Ecuador for around $100 a night with comparable scenary, better service, better food, nicer rooms, and a place that treats you like your at a home away from home

Advice: Banos the town is awesome, stay at a funky hotel in town, and come up and pay to use the hot pools for the day and enjoy the views. Cheap food in town is way better too!

I loved this property.

I spent 12 nights in Ecuador and stayed in 8 different hotels and this was my favorite location by far. I spent 4 wonderful nights at Luna Runtun. The climate was better there than it was in the highlands, I loved the warm days and cool nights.

The staff at Luna Runtun was great. I would recommend Ruperto as a driver and Celso as a guide for any trips you make, both were very friendly and knowledgeable. We spent 4 nights in the Presidential Suite and did the adventure/spa program. Yes, it was pricey but we enjoyed every moment. I traveled with a friend and we are both in our mid-twenties (for those who are curious).

I lived in the spa. My favorite treatments were the honey and sugar exfoliation and the rose bath. The spa attendants are very friendly but don't speak much english so don't expect to ask questions about the treatments. The spa facilities were nice with comfortable treatment rooms and amazing showers.

In reviewing previous reviews I will note:
Yes, the flowers in our room weren't fresh and they never got changed but I didn't care about the flowers, I was there for WAY more than that and they made up for it.
I had no problem getting a taxi in Banos to get back up to the resort, the taxis are all parked near the city square and there were always plenty.
I had plenty of attention from hotel staff, by the end of our stay most people knew our names and which room we were in.

The hot tubs/pool views are amazing and a nice pool house with all the amenities is nearby. The food was good but it is a set menu unless their are large groups and then you get a buffet. We booked our tours through Luna and they were fantastic. We did go rafting and got EXTREMELY sick about 24 hours later. Either don't go or keep your mouth tightly closed when the rapids come at you, the water is very bad. When we got sick the staff at Luna Runtun were wonderful to us. They brought us everything we needed (bread, water and sprite) and changed all our check-out arrangements for us at no cost.

If you don't use Luna Runtun for your sightseeing there are TONS of adventure tour groups and sightseeing tours in Banos. You can even rent four wheelers and take yourself where you want to go.

One thing I really enjoyed about this resort is that because it wasn't full (off season) we got to know many of the other guests and enjoy some wonderful quiet time in a place as close to heaven as I can imagine.

I would go back and I hope that someday I will!

After 9 incrediible days in Ecuador we are reluctant to share our experinces for fear of a mass explosion of tourism to a country that still retains its natural beauty and culture..The majority of our time was spent in the Andes with Quito as our starting point, but my focus will be on Banos..For the traveler looking for adventure this is where you want go..for the pampered traveler looking for a unique experince you will find it here..Banos has something to offer even the most discriminant traveler..This town, plopped in the middle of the Rio Pastza Gourge high up in the Andes relies heavily on tourism. Its natural beauty and locally grown foods and freshly made cheeses only ehance an already welcoming town..The Volcan Tungurahua is a magnificent sight to behold. Its towering peak can be seen long befor you reach the Pastza Gourge area, but rest assured the crater is facing in the oppisite direction from the town and poses little danger to this thriving community...Luna Runtun Adventure Spa is nestled high above the town of Banos and offers a very peaceful and tranquil retreat from the daily grind that we left behind in the states. Be sure to ask for Celso when looking for things to do..he is very knowledgable about the area and takes great pride in its resources....We will return to Banos and we would like to experince the town of Banos. A few dollars a day will get you a clean room, internet service, private bathroom and in most cases breakfast in the many local hostals...but we both agreed that no matter what adventure we decide to do in Ecuador on our next visit, a trip to Luna Runtun is a gift to yourself that everyone should experince.

Luna Runtun is a gorgeous hotel and spa. It is a very serene and peaceful place. The rooms are beautiful with amazing views, and nice small touches like flowers and fruit in the room. The food is relatively good, although if you are staying for several days in a row, the menu does not change and can get a bit tiresome. You are about 10 km outside of Banos so you won't learn about the city itself unless you pay for a taxi to take you there. I would say the adventures are not very spectacular, but we had fun nevertheless. Hiking is probably the best thing to do. Going to the Amazon was interesting, but there are better trips IN THE ACTUAL AMAZON itself rather than at the edge, in Puyo. The spa is great, and was reasonably priced, and the hot pools had great views, and were probably some of my favorite parts of the place. The workers were amazing, courteous, and served your every need. However, for Ecuador, the price is probably not worth it. It was upwards of $200 a night. And even though there is a great deal of personal attention from the staff, when you add in tips, it is more than $250 a night, and way above and beyond the price range that it should be. Overall, I enjoyed the experience but felt that the money was not worth it.

My wife and I stayed at the Luna Runtun for a couple of days in early January and were just enthralled by the beauty of the property, the comfort of the accommodations, the friendly and helpful staff, and the out-of-this-world scenery. The rooms are well appointed and tastefully decorated, and quite comfortable.
The food was well prepared and the resort is a decent size with 30 units and accommodations for 70. The views from the pool are fantastic. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place. There is no television or radio in the rooms, so you can really escape. Tungurahua, has been very active this year and we were able to witness some pretty spectacular sights, particularly in the evening. The loud "thunder" was the volcano "letting off steam". The walking trails immediately below the hotel lead to Banos, about 400 meters below the hotel property. We heartily recommend this hotel if you want some rest and relaxation.

  • Liked — The location and the scenery
  • Disliked — It was too far from the village, so you are at the resort for the duration if you don't have personal transportation, or use a taxi

I stayed at Luna Runtun for a week in early December and enjoyed every minute of it. The setting is out of this world, the owners Carmen and Olivier Currat are extremely caring and the staff very friendly and helpful. The location 400 Meters above Banos and directly under the volcano is unique. Recently a pool-area with several hot tubs and sensationally located has been added and the Spa area has been made considerably larger. A new Restaurant "Café del Cielo" is about to be opened, again very nicely decorated and in a spectacular location. The rooms and suites, some with their own fireplace, have been redecorated in a very romantic way. The restaurant service and food is excellent and the bar, with a fireplace is very quaint.
There are lots of activities available, from mountain climbing and -biking to horse-riding to exploring, etc.

I just knew there had to be a place in Ecuador like !! Luna Runtun is a beautiful spa tucked high on a ridgeline overlooking the city of Baños. The whole picture is framed by the towering volcano Tungurahua, which obliged by steaming and belching ash (at a safe distance) throughout our stay.

Rooms were beautifully appointment (32 and 36 have the best views if you can get them). The entire hotel complex was designed by a renowned Ecuadorian architect and it shows in exquisite construction, decorations, and landscaping.

The spa was great -- personalized attention, peace and quite, and experienced personnel.

This is one place in Ecuador that we'll be back to. We highly recommend it! Olivier (our Swiss host and hotel owner) was great as well and obviously has great pride in his hotel and how his guests feel about it.
