We stayed at the Hacienda Manteles for one night while on a tour, but would have liked to stay longer. Although remote, the setting is beautiful overlooking the Cotopaxi volcano. Both the owner and manager greeted us personally and the manager made sure we were all comfortable and even offered the use of the Hacienda's clothes dryer when my daughter and I found that that our clothes were damp due to our suitcases getting wet during the transfer from our Amazon hotel to the bus.

The rooms varied. Ours in one of the outlying buildings was clean and comfortable and just big enough for the 2 double beds. The bath was modern and we had plenty of hot water.

Since we were there just before New Years, the manager arranged for us to view several traditional Ecuadorian New Years customs which enriched our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the Hacienda or a suite

The Hacienda Manteles in Banos offers spectacular views to the Cotopaxi volcano and the surrounding park. This Hacienda has been converted into a lovely boutique hotel with converted guest rooms in the main house and separate accommodations in another out building on the grounds. Our cozy little room had a great view of the volcano. One note, the Manteles really is off the beaten path and it’s a 30 minute drive on the main road to get there – better get good directions or you are definitely getting lost.

The owner, Fernando, warmly greeted us when our bus arrived (with his many friendly dogs) and showed us around the beautiful hacienda and grounds including some of the special fruits and vegetables found in the garden. Our, room in the main lodge was very comfortable and the bathroom was small but had a great shower. Dinner in the dining room was delicious and the crepes and fresh fruit for breakfast were also delicious. Fernando gave us very personal service and he is very proud of his hotel and it really shows. There are some local artifacts on the hotel walls that are 500+ years old.

We stayed here on our trip with a tour company. The property was beautiful with great views of the surrounding countryside; the suites have giant picture windows that allow for great viewing of the nearby volcano. We were served a tasty pre dinner snack and a wonderful dinner with plenty of options for all preferences; it was one of the best meals we had in Ecuador! We also got a tour of the farm, accompanied by the very friendly dogs! They only have wifi in the common area in the main house, and its' spotty, but that's not necessary when you have great company! We had one minor mishap during our stay, in the morning, we were looking forward to a shower in the wonderful accommodations; however, one of our other tour group members got up early and her shower handle broke and she flooded her room with all the hot water the property had! So we had to pass on a shower that day as the water was ICE cold! We only stayed one night which was too short; but it was a great way to end our trip in Ecuador.

My husband and I recently traveled to Banos, Ecuador and we had the luxury of staying at this charming property. This hotel has stunning views of the Tungurahua Volcano and let me tell you, they are MAGNIFICENT views. When we first arrived we were greeted by Fernando, three very friendly dogs and a cute puppy. This did not look like a hotel. It was indeed a home. Fernando checked us in and offered us some wonderful refreshments before they showed us to our room. Now I have to say, that some rooms are better than others. We lucked up and were able to stay in room 20 and it was a knock out. This room was located towards the end of the property and had a stunning view of the volcano. We were thoroughly impressed with the accommodations. There was a very large picture window that overlooked the volcano. The bed was beautiful sitting against a stone wall. Their was a living area that consisted of a loveseat and two beautiful chairs. The bathroom was out of this world. There was a large whirlpool tub in the far corner and an equally large shower next to it. There was also a wrap-around picture window in the bathroom that offered uninterrupted views. The commode had it's own separate room with a door, loved that!! Fernando was kind enought to show us his gardens. They were stunning. We ate dinner on site as there were no close restaurants nearby. However, who would want to go to any restaurant with the meals that were served. We had a choice of trout, chicken, lasagna, filet mignon and pasta. I had the pasta, what delight! Most of the food came from the gardens on site. The meal was visually stunning and delicious as well. We were even invited to have wine and cheese before dinner. The cheese was made on site as well. Talk about delicious. The volcano had erupted three weeks before arrived and Fernando was kind enough to share the pictures of the eruption. I have to admit that this place was very homey and tranquil. Overall, you will not be disappointed if you intend on visiting this beautiful property. Like I said in the title, it's a piece of heaven on earth. Happy Travels!

Room Tip: Try to get the newly renovated rooms towards the back of the property. They are to die for!!

We arrived after an ambitious journey, rather later than planned, but after a rewarding day. We were greeted , in the dark, by Fernando and the dogs and shown to a somewhat splendid room. For some reason, perhaps because it was a Sunday night, we were the only guests. But what a place- this was wonderful. We drank a good wine, ate a beautifully cooked steak, relaxed to good music and good books, admired ( aka envied) Fernando's photos of the erupting volcano ( which we never really saw because of the low cloud) and retired later to a very comfortable room.

We were due to leave quite early the next day, but got up early in a successful attempt to see the humming birds. Then, a beautiful scenic walk with Fernando and dog, a guided tour of the vegetable garden, and even a turn at milking the cow.

This visit was rather too short. The views and surrounding countryside are beautiful. The house is warm and tasteful, the food good, the staff welcoming and Fernando very special.

If it's on your route, or close, go here. Really. It's worth it.

Stayed here on a Gate 1 tour, was greeted by 5 very friendly tail wagging dogs! and Fernando....what a delight! He gave us a garden tour before dinner. The menu was trout, filet mignon, pasta, chicken or lasagna...the lasagna was delicious . Our room ...as the rest of the place...was very homey. We had a great view of a volcano and then onward to a local school. This is truly a "must stay" hacienda!

Wonderful stay in beautifully maintained colonial hacienda. Warm and cozy with gracious staff. Fantastic food from on-site garden. Views of Tungurahua volcano erupting a night were an added pleasure. Even though the hacienda is on the Gate 1 route, this place is highly recommended if you are in the area for a longer stay.
