“Great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2010

We originally were booked to stay at the Vaisala Beach Hotel but checked out of that one after one night. We ended up at the Auga. It was great. The people were great and the food was more than we had expected. Our children enjoyed the food. It was pleasant and would highly recommend it others. We were the only guests at the hotel for a couple of days.

Stayed at the Auga Seaside Resort for 2 weeks with a 5 mth old baby and my husband. The rate was unbeatable for what you get.

The room:
- Cinder block/Solid Brick
- 3 windows (1 with view of ocean but need to be standing on bed to see it)
- GREAT Air con
- 1 x Double Bed
- 1 x Single Bed
- 1 x Table & 2 chairs
- Kettle & Tea & plates/cups
- Fresh Linen
- Telephone
- TV (only 2 channels and real bad reception)
- Private Ensuite bathroom
- Lots of fluffy white towels and Soap

The room has 2 doors (front & back) The back is for house keeping to enter your oom and clean. The Housekeeping staff are the most wonderful ladies!! careful though because they leave the back door open when they clean and mosquitoes tend to rush in.

FOOD:
The chef is great, I did find the meals a little pricey though ranging from 25TALA - 75TALA. I completely agree with the breakfast. Breakfast is included in your room rate, comes daily and it's ALOT of food. The hot portion of the meal changes everyday but is always accompanied by fruit, pancakes, syrup, cereal, tea etc and the hot stuff can be sausages or ham or eggs and bacon etc. There is a kids menu and you have a choice of Western and Samoan cuisine. They have a bar/convenience store which stocks wines, beer, spirits, non alcoholic beverages such as coke, water, fanta, juice, snacks such as potatoe chips, crackers & biscuits. You can also find other personal necessities such as deoderant but it all comes with a HEFTY price. Try to buy at the local stores or you will be paying 8 Tala (equivalent to Australian $4) for less than a litre a water but at the local shops they sell Vai Lata (Purified Water) at 5.60 TALA for the 5 litre bottle!

The bar/shop/kitchen is not always open and even though they have set times for opening and closing it must be based on number of guests. Many times my husband and I were looking forward to a meal but the kitchen was not open and ther was no one on the grounds to ask. The hotel is family run and owned. When you use the telephone to call the front desk you might be put through to the family's actual house. We called front desk once to ask about the kitchen hours and were horrified when the old man that answered yelled at us for waking him up and accused my husband of deliberately calling his home to chase his daughters???!!!!

They filled the swimming pool with water on our 4th day there so we did end up having nice swims, the pool however is only one level (no deep or shallow end). You will need a hire car as the Auga is pretty far away from everything. The grounds are nice. They have great lttle fales to sit and relax in and they have a pool table FOR GUESTS ONLY. You will pay 20 TALA to play pool if you are not staying at the Auga. Linen is changed daily and there is a security guard on the grounds at night. They provide a bassinette for babies but my son was way to big for it. The only complaint I had was obviously the rude old man but also that our room had NO hot water and with a 5 mth old baby it was hard. We had to wash him in a plastic container with water boiled form the kettle!! and our shower dripped and I mean it DRIPPED LITERALLY. Washing my hair was a nightmare because the water came out in droplets. We asked them to fix it but they never did anything anything about it. Also, there is no microwave but it is advertised on some websites that they do have them. They actually gave us their own personal microwave for 2 weeks because we had a baby that required heated food and bottles. For non Samoan speakers, you may struggle with the staff because their English is VERY limited EXCEPT for the owner Toe (female) her's is pretty good and there is NO internet but there is a local business centre with inetrnet near the Vaimoana in the village of Auala and for our 2 week stay we got one night free of charge which was pretty good.

We stayed at Auga Seaside Resort on the Samoa island of Savai'i, and felt like we very well may have been at the far edge of the world! We arrived at 5:00p without a reservation, after having driven around this absolutely stunning island. A very nice lady was at Reception who did not speak much (if any) English. I asked her if she had rooms available, how much, and if she could show us a room. She gladly showed me around. It was obvious they did not have any other guests in house. I asked her if they had a swimming pool. She said yes. The better question to ask would have been "Do you have a swimming pool that has water in it?", as they did indeed have a pool, but it was quite empty. Too funny! We still laugh about that. We did check in to our room (basically a cinder block cell with two beds, a tv hanging from the ceiling, air-conditioning, and a bathroom). Very clean but also very basic. Another nice lady from the hotel (who spoke slightly better English) asked what we want for dinner, and we placed our order. She went running to call the hotel cook and ask him to come in and prepare our meals. Too funny. We saw her running down the driveway with plastic bags, presumably containing fresh veggies, chicken and fish for our dinners. We sat and watched a breathtaking sunset as they prepared our dinner. Food was quite nice, and beer was very cheap. The next morning, we had a HUGE spread for breakfast. They kept bringing out more and more food for us. They could not have been nicer.
Now, this is not what anyone would call a nice hotel. However, we had a very fun experience, and it left us with great memories and fun stories. For the price, it is VERY hard to beat.
If our travels again take us to the ends of the earth, will we stay here again? Sure!
