Friendly small boutique style hotel located in the Vailima area, near Apia township. We had originally planned to book at the Aggie Grey Hotel chain but they were fully booked due to the filming of the TV show Survivor Samoa, however it was blessing in disguise as it led us to this gem of a hotel. This hotel has loads of personality and is a good solid choice for those seeking a comfy modern stay in Apia. Its small enough to have that family feel yet big enough to have your privacy etc. Hosts Luna and Norman are fantastic and really go out of their way to make sure your stay is comfortable. We are definitely staying at this hotel next time we’re in Samoa and will be recommending it to all our friends.

PROS
* Friendly hosts and staff - from early morning check in/ out (common for flights to/ from New Zealand) to chowing down on the refreshing complementary tropical breakfast you’ll enjoy the friendly atmosphere
* Clean and spacious rooms with trendy private outdoor private bathroom
* Close proximity to Apia (5 min cab ride approx 7 tala – approx $3.50 AUD one way into town) – just ask reception to call a cab for you
* Great fresh juices (try the banana and papaya) and range of refreshing cocktails on the menu
* Appealing presentation of food/ drinks served
* Reasonably priced laundry service (wash and dry service charged as per load rather than per item)
* Reliable wireless internet access from the lobby (purchase pre-paid wireless cards from reception @ 20 tala per hour)

CONS
* Limited traditional Samoan style food on the menu e.g. taro, luau (taro leaves in coconut cream). Samoan style oka (raw fish) would be a better choice than the Hawaiian style raw fish (poke) on offer
* Wireless internet is a little on the expensive side in comparison to other similar hotels (acknowledging of course this is Samoa not Japan or the USA where this type of service is usually included in the room rate)
* No irons in room (for convenience it would be nice to have an iron in the room so you don’t have to bother the lovely staff every time you want to iron something).

TIPS
Forget hiring a rental car unless you really need one! Ask Luna to book you in for a fully guided day tour in an air conditioned van (approx 9am – 5pm) around selected sites on Upolu island with experienced tour guide “Peter”. Peter is an ex-pilot and very knowledgeable on all things Samoan. His running commentary of Samoan culture as you drive through/past villages gives you a great understanding and appreciation of Samoa. He is friendly and personable and can tailor his tour to meet the needs of small or large groups. Among other things the tour goes to Apia Park, Piula water caves (popular fresh water swimming spot), Lalomanu beach (the nicest beach on Upolo with white sand and clear blue water) and x3 different waterfalls. Entrance to Piula caves is additional (approx 5 tala) and includes use of toilets and changing rooms.

My husband and I and our son and daughter-in-law were in Samoa for 2 weeks. We did the Fale on the beach thing for most of our stay and shouted ourselves a night at Manumea at the end of our stay. We wish we could have stayed longer. The rooms were really well appointed, loved the decor, especally the outside shower and bathroom. A short walk to Robet Louis Stevensons house and only a short drive into Apia. Staff were friendly and very professional. We hung around all day before flying out late at night. Our bags were stored and we had use of a spare room if we needed it. Would definitely recommend a stay here. Oh yes, the pool was great too.

We enjoyed our 7 night stay at Le Manumea. It is situated outside of the main area of Apia on the Cross Island road a stone's throw from the Robert Louis Stevenson memorial reserve. We were warmly welcomed by Luna and were given an early check-in along with breakfast that welcomed after the early morning flight arrival.

We found the place clean, the staff friendly though not up to the standard of waitressing we experienced on a visit to Aggie Greys for a fiafia. We really liked the room, novel outside bathroom and the relatively quiet location. We found a few things missing from the room such as a bread knife and tin opener but these were loaned to us on request for our lunches. The pool was good though needed a bit of cleaning when we first arrived (which was done). The meals were good (good variety on menu) and reasonably priced (breakfast was complimentary).

We found it a good basis to explore Upolu island and taxis were easy to call for a trip into Apia (around SMT8 - 12 per trip) which was cheaper than hiring a car for these sorts of trips. We were introduced to Peter Paul, a "cultural tour" operator and cousin of Norman the hotel co-owner, and we can recommend a day in his company touring the island. He has an air conditioned van, drove nice and slowly and gave us a wealth of information about Samoa and its culture.

We would recommend this place for couples but not children as there is no fence around the pool nor any kid-friendly apparatus or toys.

In all, we were happy with our stay and would recommend this hotel.

Our stay at Manumea was nothing short of perfect! We were treated so well from the moment we arrived. The rooms were great(fantastic bathroom!) Pool clean and refreshing. Meals delicious. Best of all everyone working there were so nice and attentive. Luna and her family made sure everything was right. We appreciated Luna's recommendations, especially the tour with Peter. Our stay was unforgettable and we hope we can return.

Manumea is fantastic. It's about a 7 minute drive into town but it's lovely being up the hill and feeling the breeze. Hotel rooms are wonderful, outdoor shower is awesome. Restaurant food is good, possibly a little slow but it doesn't matter because we weren't late for anything. Parking is out the back, easy for loading/unloading. Pool is small but just perfect for cooling down. Grounds are beautifully kept. The road Manumea is on leads EVERYWHERE! Near Bahai Temple, Robert Louis Stevenson, hospital, store, spa, great soap factory - - Mailelani (fantastic for gifts of oils and soaps). Staff are so friendly, Norman and Luna are great hosts. Will definitely be back!!!!

We had 2 days at the Manumea Resort at the end of a beach holiday in Samoa. I wish it had been longer. The staff was so welcoming. The resort rooms were lovely, particularly the partially outdoor bathroom! We enjoyed swimming in the pool with the view of Apia. I loved the open airy dining/reception area. Local building and design had been incorporated into the architecture. The food was wonderful as were the best Pina Coladas I have ever had.

Manumea review
Stayed for 5 days in September. Resort has 12 executive suites only. $350 tala per night, complimentary breakfast (average IMO)

Stayed in one an Executive Suite. Room is spacious, one queen size bed and one single bed. Shower & toilet are outside, but there is plenty of privacy with a lava rock wall/surrounding the bathroom area and security lighting at night. Hot & Cold water.

Small kitchenette area with coffee & tea making amenities mini fridge and microwave.

You'll need a car to stay here, trek into town is a hassle and dont waste money on a taxi. A CAR IS A MUST!

Bar is okay, sometimes have entertainment night on Thursdays i think. Drinks are pricey, but for a small resort they have to make money somewhere right? A basic gin & tonic cost almost $15!

Pro's
* Clean and spacious room, A/C & ceiling fan
* Maid service was prompt & efficient at best
* In-room safe, mini fridge, microwave, plates, utensils, glasses etc

Con's
* TV is a small pc screen - do offer cable channel. Still not that great
* DVD player, cheap model. Did not work or play any of the dvd's we had to watch
* Restaurant - Service was extremely slow and prices are too expensive for what we were served. Waited up to 1.5 hours for dinner to be served, we were the only guests dining at the time.

Overall, first time experience at Manumea was good. Only negative was food was overpriced, dinner service was extremely slow. For $350 a night i would expect a bit more from this hotel. Seems like they cater to the corporate crowd with money to burn... A nice small intimate place to relax away from the major hotels in town.
