Fairfield Inn & Suites Tucson North/Oro Valley
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Oro Valley
Reviewed 26 October 2011

Spent 3 nights at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Oro Valley in mid October 2011 This is not a luxury hotel, but it is clean and nicely updated, with attractive, colorful modern furnishings in the public areas and guest rooms. The rooms are on the cozy side, yet well designed and arranged with enough space for a tiny yet functional kitchen (counter, sink, small refrigerator, microwave, storage cabinets) with dishes and flatware. The room also has a small sitting area with a couch (fold-out), lamp, and small hassocks for extra seating. Desk area is good and the free WiFi is easily accessible and reliable. Beds are comfortable, bath is very clean and perfectly adequate. Free breakfast is standard--a selection of simple hot foods such as bacon, sausage, and eggs, as well as yogurt, cereals, pastry, breads, coffee and juices. The view of the Santa Catalina Mountains from the breakfast room and pool area is amazing.

The Fairfield staff are a real plus--friendly and helpful, from the front desk personnel to the breakfast crew. Our one maintainance request--for a slow bathtub drain--was repaired within a few hours. The hotel is located on one of the main routes through Oro Valley--a fairly well-traveled thoroughfare--but we heard little exterior noise, and the parking lot was well lit . The property seemed secure and safe--Oro Valley is more suburban than much of Tucson, and has many upscale shopping centers and neighborhoods. A great choice in this area--we will stay there again.

Room Tip: rooms on the back of the hotel have a wonderful view of the mountains--spectacular.

Stayed here with my friend when I moving from California to the east coast with all of my most important belongings with me. While property inside is fine, the area is sketchy, parking lots are poorly lit and there is no security and no security cameras either. My locked car, which was parked 50-70 feet from the entrance, was broken into and virtually even thing in it (including shoes and magazines!) stolen. Management was nonplussed and told me that it was "unfortunate." I would not recommend this place to anyone.

We have stayed at this hotel in the past. We have enjoyed the cleanliness, the hospitality and the view. When we booked directly through the hotel back in March, the desk clerk answered the phone "Holiday Inn." On subsequent phone calls, the phone was answered in the same manner. When we arrived on June 6th, to our unpleasant surprise we discovered that this hotel isn't owned by Holiday Inn. It is a Fairfield Inn. The inspection sticker in the elevator states Fairfield Inn and was dated in January.

Okay, where to start. We had requested the same room as last year but it smelled like "new room." So we went back downstairs and to the male desk clerk's credit, he allowed us to look at 3 other rooms and choose the one that we wanted. We settled on the first room figuring the "new room" smell would go away if we left the window open which we did and it did go away. The room was very clean and the cleaning people kept it clean the 11 days that we stayed. The towels are scratchy and thin - not like last year. We had to beg EVERY day for towels for the pool. We had to endure 6 days of construction noise and smell as they were re-doing the rooms on our floor.

The breakfast is sad. Soggy tasteless bananas. No bacon. Greasy or sometimes overcooked sausage. The young girl that was there taking care of the breakfast spent most of her time chatting with the desk clerk, or flirting with the maintenance guy. The coffee was never ready when they opened at 6:30 am and the food would run out. And of course, the wonderful cinnamon rolls are gone.

When we checked out yesterday morning, the desk clerk told us that they weren't allowed to disclose over the phone that they aren't a Holiday Inn Express anymore. And we will probably miss out on our priority club points too.

The view of the mountains from the pool is priceless. Hubby and I spent many nights in the pool watching the moon come up from behind the mountains. If you are planning on doing alot of your visiting in Tucson, it may be best to book the "real" Holiday Inn Express down on Wetmore. Less travel time and less cost for gas.

Room Tip: Ask for a mountain view room on the 2nd floor

We've been staying here for several yrs.; actually since the property was new. This most recent stay was disappointing first of all by the surly and disinterested staff that made a BIG deal about letting us do an early check-in. The mgr. was uncooperative and the desk staff was not professional. Also we had a room with a view of a wall. Yes, there were construction containers around, which should have been a clue that change was afoot; the place is now a Fairfield Inn. Cannot recommend this place; the rates are not exactly cheap and who needs the aggravation.

This Holiday Inn Express was waaay out in the North End of Tucson. If you need to be downtown, it's a long drive. However, it was very convenient to Catalina State Park and other attractions north of Tucson. The hotel was clean and comfortable and quiet. I was not bothered by partying or noise late at night. There was some remodeling going on, but noise and debris were not an issue. The morning breakfast featured hot items including bacon, and was substantial. The hotel has no restaurant, but The Loop restaurant in the same parking lot had American entrees at reasonable prices.

Arrived in Oro Valley around 1:30pm, thought we might be able to check in early as a Thursday to just to drop off luggage. Walked into lobby and girl asked me if she could help me, I advised checking in and heard a mail voice from another room yell that check in time was 3pm and nothing ready til then. Bad feeling! Left and came back at 4pm. Room was ready. Given a 1st floor room and told we could enter from front or back of hotel. In the rear of the hotel we found large containers taking up most of the parking on our side. Walked in a back door that after using card key was stuck and after a few hard pulls finally opened. Room was small and cramped, low ceilings. When you walked in you had bathroom on right and closet/kitchen area on left. We had a king bed w/ sofa sleeper for our preschooler. Sofa was fine, also had table area w/ chairs. King bed had thin mattress. Very hard. Linens were fine. Room was dark, one window that opened right to pool area, so people could see in if we left it wide open. But several lamps. Kitchen area was nice w/ small mirco and fridge, small sink, and cabinet had silverware and plates, and underneath cabinet had papertowels. Bathroom was ok except that behind the toilet the wallpaper was coming off and it had black marks or mildew or mold. shower curtin was the curved kind for more room. The shower was a little difficult to figure out, but our biggest problem was the fluctuating water temperature.....cold then burning hot, then cold then hot. And hot was very hot. Pool was not heated. It was very chilly, even w/ days in the 90's and low's in the 60's. Pool area is small for an AZ destination hotel. Very busy over the weekend. Internet service was VERY slow. My husband walked down to lobby to see if they had a booster or cable. He said staff, young woman, so "no, nothing", and walked away. You cannot make a left when leaving the hotel or when coming to it from the North. There are turn around areas on the very busy Oracle Road. The Loop restaurant next door was good. Really enjoyed Picazzo's right down the street in the Trader Joe's shopping center. Great food, great owner.

Our biggest gripe was the flooring. My 5 year old is always barefoot.....and we literally had to clean her feet constantly when in the hotel room. I know the hotel is older, and apparently going thru a remodel (hence the containers in the parking lot), but come on! Clean the carpets every once in a while. Very disgusting! I would not stay at this hotel again due to the dirty floors and the unfriendly staff. Plenty of other hotels right down the road in Casa Adobes.

I've seen this hotel from the road on previous trips to Tucson/Oro Valley but never stayed there. We didn't have a lot of choices because we made our plans late. It was a great location so we 'settled'. Turns out it was a great value. The rooms were clean and the staff was great. Over the weekend the place was pretty full but you'd never know it. It was very qiuet and comfortable. I'd recommend it to anyone.
