This was our first time to stay at Kohl's Ranch Lodge. It was a perfect week! There are three different types of accommodations available and your choice of room will make all the difference on your experience. They have hotel rooms which would be great for a short stay or if you plan to be off property most of your stay in Payson. They also have two types of cabins. We stayed in one of the smaller cabins and LOVED it! it is rustic and more compact but had everything we needed plus it has a HUGE over-sized private patio with a large private hot tub! We could see and hear the creek from our cabin and had large Ponderosa pines surrounding us. It created the perfect mountain retreat! The other cabin choice is very nice but totally different. They are not cabins but modern modular buildings with ALL the amenities. Very nice but we preferred the rustic and cozy feel of the little cabins! My kids swam in the heated outdoor pool, played bocce ball, basketball, putted on the small putting green, threw horseshoes, and had TONS of fun just playing at the creek! The many wooden "porch-style" swings and hammocks made watching them very relaxing and enjoyable for me!

Room Tip: Make sure you understand the three different types of accommodations, Hotel room, rustic cabin with...

I would be hard pressed to find anything to complain about. The staff was great. I don't know if I have ever had such good service. The location was outstanding. It was mid-Feb, so it was very quiet and that was what we wanted. I didn't know that there would be a kitchenette in the room so that was a bonus. The bed was very comfortable, more than enough pillows and blankets. Just a overall great time.

Room Tip: Walk away from the lodge's outdoor lights when it is dark (only a few feet away) and look up. Th...

A Beautiful place to stay whenever you can. Our studio room #114 had a small kitchen, small table, iron and board, flat screened tv with dvd player, faux fireplace, great soft king bed, a view tho on the dark side facing east, and a porch with rocking chairs, And a real blue bird in the tree!! The staff were so nice! Restaurant was good but pricey. The grounds were so picture perfect. Tonto creek flows thru, swings, pool, hot tub, tennis court, ect. We loved this place and hope we can come back. Prepare yourself to stay here with food ect. so you can save yourself the drive to town. We wish we were still there! Bring bikes if you can.

Room Tip: Bring a flashlight, food to cook so you don't have to leave, dvd's to enjoy

Staff is VERY friendly and accomodating.
First nite, we were told the fire would be lit at 8p. So we went up there, expecting to have the s'mores everyone spoke about. Well. You have to purchase it there. $1 buys you enough for 2. We got 6 out of it, [there's NO WAY one can put that whole marshmallow on ONE graham!] and I found out I do NOT like them. nah, not for me. Don't like the chocolate on it. That was Monday nite.
The Kohl's stables were closed. The Zane Grey restaurant was closed. All 3 days we were there. 'Because of Winter'. They had enough people there it should have been open. I heard the restaurant would be open Tuesday evening, 4-8. weird. we brought our food from Phx, so didn't need it.
Next review will be on Gentle Hands Equine Center in Strawberry for horse riding. SO glad I found it! Make sure you look up that place if you're going to Kohl's.

They put us in a newly painted room, 304, I called and asked for a room that wasn't newly painted, so we got 308. 1200sf in these 2 bdrm deluxe 'cabins'!! I THOUGHT the hottub was in the 'deluxe' cabin, but no. Diamond Resorts needs to make sure people know what is where in which room. To get a room with a hot tub [I figured I'd need one after the horseback ride], would be a downgrade to a MUCH smaller cabin. I decided to stay in the one I was in.

Will add photos when I upload them from camera.

Beds were _really_ firm. Slept little in the first one, it was so hard. The 2nd nite, slept in the other, it was better, but still hard. In these cabins there are 2 queens in one room and 1 king in the 'master' with the attached bath. The king was too hard also. Besides, I like to sleep with my window open and the flat screen t.v. was in front of the one in the king room. [yes, even when it's freezing out, lol]

Lites are good in the bdrms. Lights in living room and dining room were pretty dim. Seriously. Couldn't read in there at nite. Kitchen was huge. electric.

Place was clean. baseboards could have been cleaner. and they definitely need to vacumm under the cushions [lost a lotion jar lid there]. we removed the DUSTY fake flowers on the l.rm ledge to outside. gas fake fireplace, but it did exude warmth!

True to form to Diamond resorts, the furniture is impossible to sit on comfortably. Bring in enough pillows from the beds and they are 'ok'.

Took forever for water to heat up. I HOPE they have a recycle thing for the water. T
NOTE; the shower heads HURT. Bring your own wrench and shower head. The one in the common area bathrm was 'ok', didn't hurt as badly. The one in the master bath was, no kidding, painful.

Not enough towels for the amt of beds there. Nor enough soap or bathrm amenities.NO cell reception. They said they hired someone new to re-do it, but they are in a 'hole'. And you know? It was fine. When we went to Diamond Point Lookout, we got FIVE bars AND 3G, so we had our 'fix'. LOL

The cabins are not cheek-to-jowl, the heaters work fine.

Wednesday nite at 9 we went up for the other to do s'mores and no fire! They said, 'there's been no one here'! But they lit it. Found out the spa/pool area closes at 9!!!! That's pretty early.

Found out the pool is heated to 84. NO ONE said that when we got there. The spa is heated to 104F, which is pretty darn hot. Regs are 100-105 the guy said. I think they should turn it down to 102, which is hot enough.

The computer in the lobby won't let you access facebook. Nor very many sites other than yahoo or diamond resorts. why bother having one if people can't use it how they want too?

DEFINITELY going back here in the summer. We had a GREAT trip. Went to the fish hatchery, go from the top down. Diamond point lookout, paleontology site [bring a shovel]
I'm SO tired of going to Sedona. SO glad we went here. It was great!

Room Tip: jacuzzi [hot tub] cabins are small, wouldn't be good for a long stay or with more than 2 people...

We stayed here one night, Christmas Day. I loved this place. It's secluded and quiet, yet has a lot of things to do right on site. The staff is very friendly, the rooms very clean and homey. If you're looking for a new, high-tech resort, this isn't it. If you're looking for a comfortable and beautiful site to spend some time away in the mountains, this is perfect.

Room Tip: Cabins are right on the creek and have jacuzzis. Nice. "Suites" actually means a spaciou...

Yes, the area has hiking trails and sites that are good for picnics, camping , little general stores(when its open) and forest rangers patrolling in their pickups. The best time would be to go in season, when it is colorful and alive. If you want quiet and isolation November and onwards would be it. Note... Tonto Natural bridge is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The Lodge Lobby is consistent with its theme.. a ranch. Nothing outstanding. The staff was helpful, the workers and other employees always greet us (semi-retired husband and wife) and smile, also sort of stopping what they are doing just in case we need assistance. True, it was slow season, but it was a good impression and a welcoming one as well. The room was adequate, good bed and, yes, we got new pillows. Our studio had a small oven, microwave, fridge , toaster and coffee maker plus complete kitchen amenities. The bathroom was adequate and clean. Sheets and towels were clean. FYI, studio is equipped for just two people, period. Two plates, two cups, etc.. get the picture. Seems like every unit has a back door with a small porch. It has flower boxes, and could be quite picturesque during warmer weather. The outdoor pool is heated but we did not bring swimsuits to try it, some people did use it though. I would come back with the grandchildren and get one of the bigger two bedroom cabins that are detached during warmer weather. Would be for just a short 2/3 days though, as there is nothing else really interesting in that area.
