“Nice!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2012

This is a nice place to getaway. It sits along Tonto Creek. The main Lodge is quaint and even has a free exchange library. The pool is large and nice and the jacuzzi is comfy. The grounds are beautiful. There is a small strip of rooms of which one half faces the parking lot on one side and the pool on the other. The other half of the building is considered 'creekside' but there are cabins between these rooms and the creek. Some of the cabins looked quite old and original and others are newer Park Models aka Mobile Homes or Travel Trailers. We stayed in one of the newer 2 bedroom units. These are quite nice and have a beautiful lawn area right before the creek. The grounds are well-kept; we've never seen such a clean gas BBQ at a hotel/lodge/rental...anywhere public. There are several large wooden swings along the creek. There is a playground, tennis courts, boce ball,...quite a few things to do. There are planned events although ours were cancelled due to the late season snow fall. Even though the property is very close to the road, we never heard any road noise. The beds were quite comfy. We will review the Zane Grey Steakhouse separately (not good).

We had not been to Kohl's Ranch for many years and were pleased to see how the place has been remodeled. We had a creek view studio (be sure to ask for creek view so you don't get a dusty parking lot view). We enjoyed the hot tub/spa at sunset, and it was spotless. The studio was equipped with a stove, oven, refrigerator, kitchen utensils. We enjoyed a candlelit meal in the restaurant since the electricity went off for a few hours. Recommend bringing flashlights! Bring quarters to buy food for the fish at the nearby fish farm on Tonto Creek. There is also a Paleo Site close by to look for geodes, crystals, rocks, etc. We went to Diamond Point and found several 1-2 inch crystals, plus lots of small ones along the washes. Be sure to verify when Kohl's Ranch restaurant is closed so you can plan some meals in Payson. We tried to eat at the Airport Restaurant in Payson, but it was also closed. They do have some pet friendly rooms and we saw several dogs. Be sure to bring sun screen and hats for the intense sun and rain gear during the monsoon season. Nice place to spend a few days.

Room Tip: Two bedroom cabins are on the creek, studios creek side are also nice, but have cabins between them...

The creekside cabins are very nice. Some are rustic (smaller) and some are newer (larger). The rustic cabins have hot tubs on the deck. They also have some pet friendly units, which we stayed in. Some other family members stayed next door in a non-pet cabin. The grounds are well kept and there is a sports area with lots of fun things for the family to do, such as, basketball, bacchi ball, horseshoes, shuffle board, etc. They have hammocks, chair swings, bbqs and benches down by the creek that provide nice spots for reading, etc. There is a beautiful trail along the creek, as well, for walking. Our cabin was not clean when we arrived but after informing the front desk, they sent someone to re-clean. The beds are pretty comfortable with white linens (which I like because you can see they are clean). The biggest downside is that the reason one would pay extra for creekside would be to enjoy the creek and the scenery from the patio. The patio furniture was very uncomfortable and minimal, which defeated the purpose of the patios. The restaurant was pretty good. Nothing great but convenient. Overall, it was very nice and we would definitely go back if they get some nicer patio furniture. Who wants to be inside when you are paying for the creek?

Room Tip: We stayed in 207 and 208 (this cabin was a pet friendly cabin). I will try to stay in cabins 305- 3...

Only spent two nights in a suite style room and found it very comfortable. Some of property amenities (restaurant, horseback riding) were unavailable. Also the one night that the steakhouse was "open" - it was really only the saloon and a VERY limited sandwich menu, since it is quite a distance (15+ miles) back to Payson that was a disappointment. The second night it wasn't open at all. The pool and hot tub were great. Parking is convenient.

This was our first time to stay at Kohl's Ranch Lodge. It was a perfect week! There are three different types of accommodations available and your choice of room will make all the difference on your experience. They have hotel rooms which would be great for a short stay or if you plan to be off property most of your stay in Payson. They also have two types of cabins. We stayed in one of the smaller cabins and LOVED it! it is rustic and more compact but had everything we needed plus it has a HUGE over-sized private patio with a large private hot tub! We could see and hear the creek from our cabin and had large Ponderosa pines surrounding us. It created the perfect mountain retreat! The other cabin choice is very nice but totally different. They are not cabins but modern modular buildings with ALL the amenities. Very nice but we preferred the rustic and cozy feel of the little cabins! My kids swam in the heated outdoor pool, played bocce ball, basketball, putted on the small putting green, threw horseshoes, and had TONS of fun just playing at the creek! The many wooden "porch-style" swings and hammocks made watching them very relaxing and enjoyable for me!

Room Tip: Make sure you understand the three different types of accommodations, Hotel room, rustic cabin with...

I would be hard pressed to find anything to complain about. The staff was great. I don't know if I have ever had such good service. The location was outstanding. It was mid-Feb, so it was very quiet and that was what we wanted. I didn't know that there would be a kitchenette in the room so that was a bonus. The bed was very comfortable, more than enough pillows and blankets. Just a overall great time.

Room Tip: Walk away from the lodge's outdoor lights when it is dark (only a few feet away) and look up. Th...

A Beautiful place to stay whenever you can. Our studio room #114 had a small kitchen, small table, iron and board, flat screened tv with dvd player, faux fireplace, great soft king bed, a view tho on the dark side facing east, and a porch with rocking chairs, And a real blue bird in the tree!! The staff were so nice! Restaurant was good but pricey. The grounds were so picture perfect. Tonto creek flows thru, swings, pool, hot tub, tennis court, ect. We loved this place and hope we can come back. Prepare yourself to stay here with food ect. so you can save yourself the drive to town. We wish we were still there! Bring bikes if you can.

Room Tip: Bring a flashlight, food to cook so you don't have to leave, dvd's to enjoy
