Stayed in this hotel for 5 nights while attending a conference. Location for conference was within an easy walking distance. Not a great location for walking to anything after conference hours as the core of Phoenix basically shuts down after office hours. Hotel staff were friendly but not particularly knowledgeable about cities venues and transportation systems. The room itself was small but what was unacceptable was the bathroom. My estimate would be that it was less than a yard wide. This presents problems while using the bathroom. While using the sink you had to be careful not to bend over to far to brush your teeth so that you didn't hit your head on the wooden shelf above the sink and couldn't back up to avoid the wall behind you. Getting up off the toilet was also problematic because you easily could hit your face on the toliet paper or your head on the wall, This room is super tight! The shower was equally as small. There was no tub. The shower was it. Other folks had commented on the random temperatures of the water and this was also my experience. This hotel is overrated in it's description. I went to use the state of the art fitness room as it is described online and found it to be severely lacking. I saw three machines for use. Each was reasonable but certainly not in my experience what I would call state f the art.

We thank you for staying with us while you were in town for a conference. Our accommodations are original from the late 1920's so compared to a modern hotel about we do come out looking smaller. Sorry for this inconvenience and I hope you overall had a lovely trip. Safe travels wherever you end up next and we hope to see you again!

Did not stay at the convention hotel. Just 1 1/2 blocks away the Hotel San Carlos is a lot less. It dates to the 1920's and has cool history on every floor. Was in a Hitchcock movie! All the stars were there at one time or another. The rooms are retro. But they are comfy and I love the pillows. The Vietnamese resteraunt downstairs is top notch. Great service from everyone. (OK the directions were not always the best but close enough). Walking distance to every thing.

We thank you so much for being a guest here at the Hotel San Carlos. You walked the halls of old Hollywood, ate at the tasty Bonjour Vietnam and hopefully had a great convention! Safe travels and we can't wait to have you as a guest again.

Loved the ambiance! Marilyn Monroe stayed here, and many say it is haunted by a patron who committed suicide decades and decades ago. My husband was awakened by footsteps in our room (I think it was the power of suggestion)! The room was extra small, but we prefer boutique hotels as opposed to chains.

Near the high-rise Hyatt and Westin, a relic of the Old West with rooms named for the stars who stayed there. My room was down the hall from the Spencer Tracy suite. The stars are embedded in the sidewalk like Beverly Hills - Marilyn, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, you name it. Good Vietnamese bistro in house. For folks who like things the way they were, this 1928 classic is right for the price and the place in downtown Phoenix. Also a good choice for the convention center crowd.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor doe the better views.

So this review maybe should go under attractions, but here is no San Carlos Hotel there. One thing you might not know about the San Carlos Hotel is that it is very, very old, and subject to hauntings. There is a tour you may sign up for, either as a guest or coming in without a hotel stay, although that might prove quite interesting to stay overnight as it is a fully-functioning hotel with a lovely lounge/bar area. The lobby was beautifully decorated with lovely tapestries and crystal chandeliers which takes you back to a more graceful era. The ghost hunt includes a number of rooms in the hotel, beginning at the outdoor pool area, the gym, a couple bedroom suites and the basement. There is some stairclimbing and narrow walkways so be physically capable before embarking on the journey. Excellent experience with lots of history given throughout the tour.

Room Tip: Parking on street is free after 6pm.

We have been visiting phoenix for Alice Cooper's Christmas Pudding show for the last six years. We have stayed at the San Carlos each time. We like the character of the old historic hotel. What we really like is how nice the staff and management are. The hotel is in the heart of downtown, within walking distance of Cooperstown and sports venues. The metro rail stops just around the corner from the front door. You can take it to and from the airport. We have saved hundreds of dollars by using this service and not renting a car. The pool is heated and sits atop Seamus McCaffery's Irish pub. I came back here to explain the excellent breakfast rating. The staff turned us on to Matt's Big Breakfast. It is about four blocks and totally worth it and the possible wait time(always a sign of a good dining experience). Downtown Deli is only about 40 steps from the hotel and excellent as well. We wish best of luck for the new eatery Bonjour Vietnam, who invited us to their party......we are considered family of the Hotel San Carlos now. We look forward to our trip December 2013!

Room Tip: Suites have two bathrooms. You can get a room with a fridge. If music might bother you at night,try...

My husband and I enjoyed staying here from the historic aspects of the hotel. To sit in the pool and imagine the old-time celebrities that enjoyed the hotel was fun. Things were simpler back then, and the scale of the hotel pool and rooms reflects that. But, for us, it was nice to take a glimpse back to that more innocent time. Granted, you can hear everything through the paper-thin walls, but... aside from that, we enjoyed our stay. It was cozy, but clean.

Dear Hotel San Carlos guest – I’m glad to hear you had a pleasant stay while you were here. You are perfectly correct on the historic aspects of the hotel. The walls are thin and pick up on the city noise but we are located in the heart of downtown Phoenix and can be expected in any major city. With that said though I’m glad it wasn’t a deterrent for your stay. It’s great that you had a chance to enjoy the pool and sit back and relax to, like you said, a more innocent time. We hope to see you here again! And safe travels wherever you end up next!
