“A nice spot for families.”
Reviewed 25 April 2014

We were looking for a warm US vacation destination for the kids other than Florida. The water park and other pools at the Arizona Grand were a hit with the kids. The rooms were nice. The food in the onsite restaurants was good, but very pricey. The four of us couldn't eat breakfast for under $100. Ouch!!! We found several restaurants close by buy off the resort that helped stay within the vacation budget.

We stayed 4 nights. It was the week after spring break so not too crazy. The water park is loads of fun for the kids. The suites are big and good price. No noise and slept like a baby. We had a pleasant experience. The drawbacks no healthy menu's by the pool, room wasn't cleaned well in between nights, lounge chairs dirty and towels small and old. The resort is really pretty when you arrive but the outskirts are a little scary! It served its purpose for the trip we needed and quite frankly we would come again since the price was right for our vaca. Again really liked the water park!

Room Tip: Corner suites are awesome! No noise

Prior to arriving at the Arizona Grand Resort & Spa, I read many reviews of the resort. It appeared many of those providing reviews of the resort were upset for how much they were paying for a drink at the water park or the resort food. My comments to those who wrote these reviews is you are at a resort. You should expect to pay $10 for a drink at the pool or $15 for a burger. If you don't like the cost then stay at a holiday inn. Anyway, here are my comments and tips about the resort:

1) Room - Upgrade to a Villa. You have a full refrigerator/kitchen so you can go out to Walmart or another store and stock up with water, liquor, snacks etc..keeps the cost of the trip down. The Villa we stayed at faced the golf course and had great views of the golf course. The Villa is also much larger room then the standard suite. It does cost more but you make up for it with a very comfortable big room. Our room was cleaned everyday and since it faced the golf course it was very quiet.
2) The water park is awesome. Best waterpark we've been to. I have a 7 year old boy who loved the water slides, lazy river and his favorite was shooting baskets in the water.
3) Food - get off the resort to eat. There are plenty of places to eat within a few miles of the resort. We had many lunches and snacks in our room. If you eat at the resort, the lobby grill was nice.
4) Goto a grocery store to stock up on snacks, water, soda and other items.
5) Golf - I didn't golf at the resort but they do have a golf course so I have no comments here.
6) Service - we had great service at the resort. A special call out to Tim Watkins who was very friendly and went out of his way to make sure our stay at the resort met expectations.

The last night at the resort we ate out at rustler's rooste. The resort provides a shuttle ride back and forth. This is a very family friendly place with great views. The food was good and reasonably priced. My only regret is we only went here one time during our 5 night stay.

Overall, my family and I had a great experience at this resort. This was our first time in Arizona so we didn't know what to expect. My family and I would return to the Arizona Grand for a future vacation.

Our family of four (kids 13 and 10) stayed four nights in a double-queen resort suite. It was cozy, but workable, especially with the use of the pullout couch on several nights. We don't golf but used the resort as a base for exploring Phoenix in the mornings, then returned in the afternoon to swim and play in the waterpark. Good location, convenient to lots of areas of Phoenix, made getting around pretty easy. Resort is almost thirty years old but they're keeping it up. It felt well-used but not worn. We liked the little surprise amenities like the smaller pools / hot tubs at each building, separate from the Oasis waterpark, where we could swim and cool off without quite as much chaos, and also the ping pong table tucked in the little shaded courtyard proved fun for all of us. Room rates were very reasonable for what we got, including the waterpark as a free addition, but resort pricing on food and beverage wiped out any sense that this was a bargain vacation. However, food options were convenient and surprisingly good, if relatively expensive. Overall, a fun place to stay with a family for our four days (but probably not much longer).

We loved this place so much we decided to stay again for the Easter weekend with our friends from out of state... I am very dissappointed this time around and the only reason I am giving them an Average score is because of my great experience last summer.
1. Our "upgraded" room in the Sedona suites had no balcony or patio just a door leading out to a brick wall.
2. We had ants in our bathroom so they came and sprayed and we were told we could not use it until housekeeping came and cleaned. We had to call twice to get them to come and clean so we could use it... 2 hours later!
3. Our 2nd day housekeeping neglected to even clean our room. We came back from the pool at 4:45 and our room had not even been touched. For a 3 night stay we did not have housekeeping once!
4. The mattress on the pull out bed had springs sticking out. We had to call down and they did bring us a mattress pad as the bed was clearly not sleepable.
5. Twice our keys stopped working so they had to come and let us in our room but failed to bring us new keys. By this time we were on a first name basis with the front desk!
6. Our friends are driving back to California today and I decided to call down for late check out (noon vs. 11:00) so we could go to breakfast before we packed up and I was told that due to high occupancy they were not allowing for any late check outs. Well I guess that is a good thing because I don't think I really even want to stay another hour.
I realize that much of this might be due to the high occupancy for Easter weekend as this was such a night and day experience from last summer. If you do stay here I would recomend not staying on a Holiday weekend and for better rooms/view stay in the mountain side or villas! They are much nicer!!

Room Tip: Stay in villas or mountainside only!

Dear Phatmom2000,
Thank you for taking the time to remark on your recent stay with us. I am sorry to hear that your visit was not all you hoped it would be. I'm sorry about the housekeeping issues with your room as well as the issue with the keys. I am sorry that we could not give you a late checkout, that is a free service we always try to give, sometimes, however, it is just not possible. We, at the Arizona Grand Resort and Spa, pride ourselves in providing a high level of service to our guests we are sorry to have fallen short in your case. We sincerely hope you will return someday allowing us to demonstrate how important your business is to us.

When our first room choice wasn't exactly what we thought it was going to be (mostly because of us, not the resort!) Frankie at the front desk was able to help us find a Villa suite that more than exceeded our expectations. Very close to the water park (yet quiet at nighttime) and very reasonable pricing compared to other similar quality resorts (Fairmont was a lot higher price for same size room and Marriott didn't have rooms available for our stretch of time).

Great experience overall! Thanks to Frankie at the front desk!

Room Tip: If traveling with 5 or more, spend extra for the villa. Well worth the money

We stayed 3 nights over spring break with our 4 kids ages 1-10. Check-in was straight forward, though no room upgrade was available. Since I booked through a third party vendor, I was hit with a "surprise" additional $40/nite resort fee which they waved for the first night since the pool was closed for a special event. Parking is limited, though on the plus side you can park close to your room if you get there early enough. Valet parking is free. The rooms are clean and decently sized, but not huge. The frig is stocked with the usual expensive snacks. They did say we could empty the frig and use it for our own food- it would have been better just to have an empty frig to use. No microwave available. Standard pack and play, no crib or crib sheet provided- they do give you a little blanket. The grounds are so-so. The golfing area and landscaping are very nice but the courtyard around our room was dingy. We were a short walk to the water park where we spent most of our time. The water park is quite large and the legendary slides were not disappointing. The curvy slide is OK for kids 7-8 and up. The straight slide is too fast and in fact you can get hurt "down there" if you are not really careful to cross your legs on the way down- wouldn't recommend it for anyone except the most adventurous of kids. The cabana was $250 per day- we did it one day. Nice but not necessary, we had similar experience second day with no cabana. Best part is to have an actual table to eat at and get nice plate of cookies and fruit as well as cold water. Service was good. Food at poolside limited- no kids menu but they have all the basics- burgers, hot dogs, etc. Expensive of course. Hotel lobby mart with very limited options. There's a Kroger's family market (Frye's?) a few blocks away- best to stock up there. Also a Target a couple of miles down the road. Two great restaurants nearby- Aunt Chilada's and Rustler's Roost- great for the whole family and very good food at both.
Overall, nice family getaway if you like hanging at pool all day and weather is nice. Otherwise, nothing too special. Could have been a little cleaner and the service was overall good. Not luxurious, but very nice property. We drove to Scottsdale on our way out of town and went to the new Butterfly Wonderland- fun for 1.5 hours for the kids.

Room Tip: Camelback is closest to water park. Ask for room on first floor if you are going to be coming and g...
