The MIM is terrific for everyone from ages 8-80, with a variety of interesting things to see-- and a hands on exhibit to test your musical skills...or in my case, lack thereof. The exhibits show you musical instruments from every corner of the world, including a set depicting drums, wind instruments and other percussion items made from discarded trash. Most of the rooms contain monitors that show and tell a brief story of the specific country's musical heritage and instruments. There's even an Elvis section, along with tributes to modern artists such as Dick Dale (surf music king), Eric Clapton,The Beatles and a handful of others.

DO NOT MISS visiting this fabulous museum while staying in Phoenix. There are instruments from so many places we've never even heard of. The displays were so well organized. And we liked the audio feature of our receivers picking up the sounds from the videos at each display. This was so educational and fascinating for the musical and non-musical visitor. In addition, the restaurant, Cafe Allegro, was outstanding -- plenty of healthy and tasty offerings, all reasonable priced. There is ample parking and it is easy to find.

Plan to spend at least 3 hours there. It will be worth your time.

We were traveling to and through Phoenix and was looking for something to spend an afternoon on. I found this place on here, and thought it was something my wife and I would enjoy.

First off, it is a beautiful building and is put together really well. With your admission, you get these headphones and receiver. I've used things like this before, but these were great. Simply walk up to an exhibit, and it'd start playing music or audio to whatever is on the screen. No buttons to push, nothing to scan, just WORKS.

We really enjoyed the museum in general. The different countries/continents was a clever way to categorize things. There was a lot to see, almost to the point of exhaustion. It did get to a point where I said, "I think I've seen enough goat hide on gourds for a while."

The room with all the instruments to play was great. Of course lots of drums and percussive instruments. I did get the chance to hit a large gong, which was cool. They also had a thermamin, which is that creepy electric sound you hear in Sci/Fi movies. Awesome!

I enjoyed my time there and would definitely recommend this place to others.

This is a great museum for adults and kids. It has a very distinct, progressive layout. Knowing what we know now, we wouldn't have spent as much time on the early exhibits through the contintents unless you have most of the day to spend. The headsets were pretty cool (note most of the audio stops are on the second floor) as you could here music examples at virtually every location. They also ran a demonstration of a large "automated organ" which is twice a day. Definitely worth re-routing for when you hear it announced. Also some very interesting memorabilia that we enjoyed.
